I especially hate it when people use this device (!) right after quoting something, especially if they proceed, redundantly, to explain that they're offended at the quoted text.

Regardless of its long and glorious history, the parenthesized exclamation point could become a new (!) trend, simply by virtue of a tenfold increase (!) in its use in a short time.
