I love shopping!!! I am just v v v selective about things I'm willing to spend money on, and how much. It's true that I don't want more general STUFF that needs to be dusted or taken care of, in my life. On the other hand, I feel like I'm an adult now and I want... a couch. And some decent dishes that weren't hand-me-downs with cracks in them (this is what I have now basically). And professional clothes that I like wearing, since I have to put them on 5 days a week for the rest of my forseeable life.

So I enjoy the ways in which having CERTAIN non-essential things makes my life better, I just want strict control of what those things are. Hence, shopping is A MISSION with a focus, and then you go home.

question: does record shopping count?

also: browsing for used synths on eBay?

^^^^^because i could quite happily do either of those shopping-related activities for days at a time. however i would chew my own foot off to get out of going to the supermarket or buying new shoes or anything like that

'sometimes it's a lot of fun' will win by 50 votes to about 8 apiece

Chose "sometimes" because I love going out to buy just about anything except clothes and shoes.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

Clothes shopping by myself is awesome.

Clothes shopping with other people is so unbelievably not awesome.

I think most of my issues with shopping have very little to do with shopping itself and more to do with my own issues with merging my shopping style with others.

i accidentally touched the nub and it was squishy (HI DERE), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

WmC on point there. I'm no big spender (well, ever, really) but there's undeniably a thrill in buying something every once in a (long) while that most voters here are gonna find it impossible to disregard.

i hate clothes shopping. i wish the government would issue everyone the same outfit.

I used to beg my parents to send me to private school so I could wear a uniform.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

And not because I was into uniforms, but because I hated to having to think about and care what I wore.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i would have been (& prob would be now) totally ok with a uniform.

you want a war on christmas i'll give you a fuckin war on christmas (will), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Dan, I did realise that I slipped from personal experience into the universal during the course of that sentence. I think it's largely true that buying some things can occasionally be thrilling for most people? It's not stupid to say that? I didn't say all.

Electric Universe (wherever that is) (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

i always assumed my cousins who went to catholic school in Mobile got COOL TOYS b/c their parents didn't have to buy them a bunch of stupid clothes every year.

you want a war on christmas i'll give you a fuckin war on christmas (will), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah FUCK shopping for the most part. outside of the occasional book or record I can't remember the last time I felt excited or even really satisfied with a purchase.

I don't think it's at all a gimme that most people occasionally love shopping. ufrthermore, I don't think that loving shopping once would automatically put you in the "sometimes shopping is fun" camp.

There's a difference between loving the act of perusing and purchasing one particular type of item and loving a particular item but hating or not caring about the process you go through to acquire it; the end result (owning something you think is awesome) is distinct from the process you took to acquire it.

^^^^ this.

Shopping goes from miserable to tolerable to fun as the quality and selection at the store go up, obviously. Record stores, it takes Amoeba-or-better to get me interested; bookstores, it takes interesting niche stores, like all-cookbooks or all-sf; cooking supply stores and grocery stores, it just takes a good stock of stuff I can't get here in Podunk.

this sort of answers my question regarding record shopping

because yes mostly it's because i love records and want to have more of them lots more of them. but at the same time i do just like going to record shops and looking at records even if i'm too skint to buy any. but i'm not sure if this is because i enjoy the act of shopping or if it's because i love records so much i just want to contemplate even the idea of possessing more of them

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Guilty of loving shopping, but I am brutally efficient when on an item quest. I get very impatient with shopping companions who over-browse (I used to tell my mom 'we have to go now' if I got bored in the shops when I was little).

sacher torte reform (suzy), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

so did i! she would try to ply me with snacks or promises of soft pretzels but usually i just kept whining.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

actually buying stuff is fun, going to the store and finding/trying on/checking prices/comparing potential purchases is a hassle that I would rather not deal with.

when i shop for clothes i sometimes think they are trying to tell me "we don't care about people with long arms and long legs," kind of like how most desks and scissors are right-handed. i feel like an outsider.

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Really? I think they are trying to tell ME "we don't care about people with short arms and torsos," i.e. here, have this tunic down to your knees and roll up the sleeves a few times.

I do love shopping and am kind of ashamed of this because I don't particularly want to be materialistic or spend a lot of money on non-necessities. I at least get around the second part by doing most of my clothes shopping at thrift & consignment stores but have to admit to the first.

Maria, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

I enjoy shopping w/the gf but I think that's because we're both a bit stylistes manqués. It also helps that I have a certain fear of seeing something and buying it on impulse. If I know what I need, shirts for instance, I'll get shirts and if nothing appeals except another item, I will very, very rarely buy it unless it's either ridiculously cheap or incredibly awesome. If I still have to have something the next day, I'll go back and check it out and maybe get it but I've been burned too many times by impulse purchases to allow it very much and sometimes I'll go shopping without any other intention than to see what's out there, what people are wearing and how and consciously refrain from spending anything at all.

If I have to spend on clothes, to avoid impulsiveness I put things on 24-hour hold. To pass the I want it test, i have to go back for whatever it is.

My mother and aunt could browse without end, convinced that a cut-price Halston jumpsuit was in THE VERY NEXT RACK. We would then go to eat at a restaurant and my mom would smoke and drink coffee forever; nearly got smacked for interrupting the waitress asking 'is there anything else?' with 'NO! She's had too much caffeine already.'

sacher torte reform (suzy), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

harbl how can you say that when you were just complaining about x-long pants!!!

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

i don't mind shopping 75% of the time tho buying clothes can frequently be a pain in the ass.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

those were ordered online by my mom! they don't have them in stores. i'm usually just plain long. but for example suit jackets almost never fit my arms/shoulders :/

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

i seem to see short and long pants in stores all the time

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

the x-long pants were about 4 inches too long o_O

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

I went shopping w/a gift card a few days after Xmas for basics and when my gf called from the non-Men's dept across the street to see if I wanted to check out some bedding, I told her quite plainly that there was no way in Hell I was going into another retail environment just then.

Enfonce bien tes ongles et tes doigts délicats dans la jungle de (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

harbl, what size(s) do you wear? X-long pants sounds like they're unfinished.

Enfonce bien tes ongles et tes doigts délicats dans la jungle de (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

For example, I cannot buy pants at Macy's in SF 'cause they don't have any 32 inch waist pants w/a 34 inch inseam but I often buy dress pants that are many inches 'too long' so they could be cuffed.

Enfonce bien tes ongles et tes doigts délicats dans la jungle de (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

like an 8 long? my mom just made a mistake. i think they were made for people above 6'. all i'm saying is when i shop i feel like nothing fits me. stuff comes in short and long sometimes but that doesn't necessarily mean it fits.

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i kept them and i'll just have them altered, they fit otherwise. they are hemmed though, not unfinished.

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

probably more like 2" too long

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

RE: clothes, I feel it's a truism that most clothes don't fit most people (particularly in the post-tailoring age).

i accidentally touched the nub and it was squishy (HI DERE), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

probably true but it at least *appears* that other people can find clothes that fit in stores

it doesn't matter if everyone feels like that, it still makes me hate clothes shopping!

jortin shartgent (harbl), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

I had a spitting, cursing fit in front of my mother in a dept store dressing room b/c some brands of "petite" workwear are STILL too long in the body for me, ie the jackets fall too far from the shoulder. DUDE, IF EVEN A PETITE IS TOO BIG, WTF DO I DO??

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

alterations are awesome imo

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

The ansewr turned out to be that one brand's "petite" is not another brand's "petite", so you just learn who makes clothes to fit you and then fuck shopping at the rest. TBH I'm okay with that, because it will prevent my ever having to set foot in a J Crew store again in my life.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Lord knows I can't prevent myself from used book shopping. I think I'll hit like 4 bookstores on a good day.
