Preview looks pretty funny, albeit with that 80s mix of comedy and violence.

I don't know if I am looking forward to this or not. Both of them are reliably hilarious but the movie looks like it might suck...?

also James Franco and Mila Kunis seem to be poised on awesomeness

but the whole thing comes across like the Jimmy Fallon/Queen Latifah taxi movie

I lol'd at "I don't want the kids to live with your mother she's awful!" - maybe an easy line but good delivery.

Whole thing looks like a dumb idea for a movie but maybe salvageable by the stars.

screwball romance is dead, long live screwball romance

this is not a screwball romance

This is a buddy action film with a comedic couple as the leads.

The Lethal Weapon fonts in the preview tell you so.

Carrell and Fey are fairly hot commodities, so pairing them makes good hollywood $en$e. Whether it makes for a good movie, who the hell knows?

Aimless, Monday, 11 January 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

the trailer didn't play it up but obv there's the inference that their marriage is -struggling- somehow. and that they find renewed love through thrilling shared action scenario. like rear window meets speed. on acid.

Inspiration for the sex robot sprang from the September 11 attacks (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

I think this movie'll do well at the box office, in part because of the meta element of couples who normally stay in watching The Office and 30 Rock making time to see this.

nah trailer's still too cutesy to really force home the ennui of the american family as told to filmmakers everywhere

louis is there anything that you dont make needlessly complicated

oh I should have reworded that

living like the Na'vi will never happen (HI DERE), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

ok some filmmakers upon whom it would be expedient to portray suburban american family life as a vice-like asphyxiation rather than a many-headed beast full of reward (n.b. i have not seen Parenthood nor will i)

the way the trailer presented their love life was goofy and not convincingly stagnant. if they had no love-life they'd not be in the same bed. but fine, it's a silly movie n/m

jon i am saying that i do not like or believe in those signifiers! to me they come off as cutesy!

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

why do we need to know about this movie four months in advance?

sonderangerbot, Monday, 11 January 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

Four months is actually pretty short lead time for most movies these days.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah come on fantasy, it was a completely valid use of 'signifiers' and you're kinda offending your own intelligence

but anyway what i *said* is that yes they have their problems but it is not a movie that makes a great or convincing deal of those problems - it's a silly action movie predicated on zaniness and star chemistry - it won't be great at those either but it will get money which i guess is enough for these savages

living like the Na'vi will never happen (HI DERE), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

i said that screwball romance was dead (because hollywood scriptwriters/directors don't know the composition of chemistry or the thrill of love any more) but that long live screwball romance because this souped-up action-packed cliche-ridden star vehicle is what they're giving us instead

Inspiration for the sex robot sprang from the September 11 attacks (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

living like the Na'vi will never happen (HI DERE), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

ew, not on this thread please

that sex version of "blue thunder." (Mr. Que), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, if it wasn't obvious, the reason why ppl are giving you shit is because there is exactly NOTHING in this trailer that would make anyone with familiarity with the concept of "screwball" apply it to this movie; in fact, if anything it's an inversion of screwball since the adventure is happening because the couple is desperately trying to expose a secret rather than cover one up.

living like the Na'vi will never happen (HI DERE), Monday, 11 January 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

i was using the term loosely to cover 'a caper where fast-talking witty dialogue, a dose of danger, a task to be performed and a romantic couple are intricately involved' but come on the direction of the secret (which may be reversed during the film!) isn't that integral is it? besides they are covering up their identity for quite a bit of that trailer.
