Le Genou de Claire out of the half or so I've seen.

And you call yourself Noodle Vague?

lex submerge (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

Ha!

Rohmer isn't really my fave by any means.

Didn't realise he'd just died tho. RIP

The unusually cool weather has me pining for An Autumn's Tale over Pauline and Le rayon vert.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

Tempted to go for Nuits de la pleine lune at present.

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

I particularly loved his 80s work - the Comedies and Proverbs series and 'Four Adventures...'. Voted for 'Aviator's Wife' in the end.

RIP (is there a separate thread for this?)

RIP Eric Rohmer

I've only seen six or so, but I'll go with the obvious: Ma nuit chez Maud.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

xp thanks, baaderonixx

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

I rewatched bits of Maud last night and I was surprised how luch more aesthetically minded it seemed (but maybe that's the B&W). The cast in that one is unbeatable, but some of the dialogue is a bit heavy handed, compared to his more elusive approach later on.

Another poll in which next to nobody votes and I forgot vote for my choice and it is one of the many which receive zero votes. Should be an emoticon for that.

Said vote would have gone to:
1972 L'Amour l'après-midi (Love in the Afternoon/Chloe in the Afternoon)

Probably, but Le Beau Mariage was robbed nonetheless.

nostormo, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

hadnt known it was nearly all improvised? i did not completely love it tbh, def below abt 6-7 other rohmers

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

i think the core of the movie success is the slow development of Delphine character and it's beautiful irony: her "pathetic" believes are not so pathetic after all. as long as you have a strong believe, that's fine, and that's the only stable thing she had in her life/

and Marie Rivière is awesome of course.

i think it's Rohmer's 2nd best after Claire's Knee

j., Thursday, 11 July 2013 06:06 (twelve years ago)

four weeks pass...

the 80s pop-synth score at the start of Le Beau Mariage is so incongruous it made me lol - and the rest of the film is p funny too (especially the scene where Sabine starts removing the candles from her birthday cake)

Rayon Vert is great. I don't remember the last time I identified so strongly with a protagonist. The vegetarianism scene is excruciating.

I completely agree. I've never seen a better cinematic depiction of awkwardness. It's wonderful!

still torn as to whether I shoudl shell out 200 euros for the blu-ray boxset.

I've seen lots. It's a good movie but nothing like the greatness I'd been told about, and not his best.

normcore strengthening exercises (benbbag), Monday, 6 June 2016 13:06 (nine years ago)

I just saw L'Ami de mon amie as well, which is really fun. I love the awkward scene where Blanche, Lea, and Alexandre are meeting up to go to a party. Blanche has trouble forming a sentence when she's around Alexandre, and Lea has advised her just to be jokey and casual; but Lea speaks so easily and rapidly with Alexandre that she keeps blocking any opening Blanche might have. Rohmer is great at setting up this kind of complex energy between two or three people and also at letting you see a character through another's eyes.

jmm, Monday, 6 June 2016 13:26 (nine years ago)

xp

I've seen lots.

Like what? I'm always keen to watch films that foreground awkward people. I guess Solondz is pretty amazing at it too.

Green Ray is likely not my favourite Rohmer (maybe it's A Tale of Springtime?), but the extremes of anxiety are acutely rendered.

yeah but A Summer's Tale had beach shots of Melvin Poupaud

I don't know how much of this was improvised. Delphine telling everyone that she'll just have a tomato for dinner is perfect. You can feel the disdain rising around the table.
