Yr breakfast bowl: cereal first vs. milk first

My Welsh-via-Trinidad grandmother would always pour the milk in the bowl first, which I thought was extremely bizarre and made no sense. I guess I'm making this poll to as the weird ones: why do you pour the milk in first???

Cereal first – cereal floats in milk. If you pour the milk in first, the cereal will sit on top of it & it won't fit very well in the bowl, forcing you to submerge it with the aid of a spoon. Cereal first avoids this problem.

everyone here otm except my grandmother is relatively not-wacky! Hunh. She did go to a reaaaaally stingy boarding school though, maybe that had something to do with it?

Cereal first, except when you've got so little milk that it may not be enough for a normal bowl. Then milk first so you can add as much cereal as possible and still get a good ratio.

the proper method IS to pour the milk in first, then slowly fold in the cereal, though nobody actually does this anymore

fleetwood (s1ocki), Monday, 18 January 2010 06:38 (sixteen years ago)

A great idea, if I think about it, but I'd never ever do it.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 18 January 2010 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

cereal first, although if there's too much milk left in the bowl afterward, it's cereal -> milk -> more cereal

There's no don't like cereal option.

this is a statistical impossibility

"the proper method IS to pour the milk in first, then slowly fold in the cereal"

but that means that ALL the cereal is covered in milk, whereas there ought to be a dry, crunchy layer on top for textural contrast.

I have a friend who does this! I've never seen her do it, but she's told me she does. Apparently she only puts in enough cereal for a spoonful, and then keeps adding spoonsful as she eats them. I think she also mentioned that she adds an ice cube to the milk.

No doubt!

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Monday, 18 January 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

there ought to be a dry, crunchy layer on top for textural contrast.

if u add enough cereal first, the top layer will have just a splash of the liquid, thus texture stratification is *achieved*

i have done the ice cube thing (cause the milk hadnt been in the fridge)

never again

I always tamp down the cereal so that it all gets milk on it before eating any. If I wanted dry, crunchy cereal I'd eat it out of the box!

I always have an introductory pre-milkification handful, for quality-control purposes.

no ice cubes though. what strain of frothing madness is that?

m the g, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

won't the milk splash out if you pour the cereal into it?

a fortnightly mood for me.

Thinking about the premise of milk first and it struck me that for someone who considered the milk to be fundamental part of the meal, with the cereal being a supplement to that, milk first would make perfectly good sense.

I microwave my cereal, so milk first would result in too much milk and probably overflowing of the bowl with over-hot milk.
