Wha is the DEAL with the Droid phone thing?

I might get the googlephone/Droid Eris in the near future. Will this be a turrible mistake that I'll regret for the rest of my life or until the contract runs out (whichever comes first)?

I don't understand the hype, tbh. What is the "Droid platform" and why do we care?

I'm certainly regretting my G1, the first phone with the "Android" platform, especially now that the makers and app creators have pretty much abandoned it.

Yes yes I know.

It seems..."good" that the platform is open-source. I'm a tech idiot but I'm sure someone out there is programming something cool that will be the new standard of devices.

Is it objectively better than an iPhone? It's certainly cheaper, from what I can tell.

Are there enough apps for it to make life interesting? The official "marketplace" doesn't seem to have THAT many.

I've never played with an iPhone, so I can't directly A-B the two phones. My G1 has served me very well, but the lack of apps is really a major reason for my disappointment You'd think the "open-source" platform would lead to more innovative apps, but it seems like everyone is chasing the iPhone market.

iPhone has a huge head start. And bizarrely for an Apple product, there's less chance of being left with an obsolete and undesirable lump of plastic in six months time.

i'm curious if the google nexus dingus is any better than the droid.

Scanning some reviews of apps, it seems like there are about 96,549,273,485 classic NES games, alien warfare games, 1st person shooters, and ways to get your sports scores, but I was hoping for a little more imagination in the offerings.

This thread is for the Google Android Phone, or the T-Mobile G1.

Google Android apps S/D

i use mine for work so the apps i look for are mostly practical, and to that end there are some cool ones

Thanks, I searched "cell phone reviews" a few different ways, but that is much more helpful.

btw if you buy one, buy the googlephone which apparently gets more right than the motorola droid. also, get the unlocked version - you'll front more cash up front, but won't be locked in, and can switch carriers, and still use it abroad.
