This is a thread to notice the everyday objects or ideas that bounce into your head and fill you with the urge to run as fast as possible out of your workplace (homeplace?) and either keep running forever or head to the nearest point of refuge (e.g. the pub)

Today: In the art class I'm working in, a Bakelite-esque ashtray, 1970s looking, with a prancing horse over a round shield/wheel thing. Little indentation in front for the cigs plus two cig grooves angled in at either side. Looks like something you'd find in a public house c. 1974. Big wave of nicotine/alcohol craving kicked in, plus nostalgia for pre-85 Britain, plus "Jesus why am I here I need to get the fuck out".

This happens to me quite a bit.

Some songs do this to me, obv I guess. "hey I remember how this made me feel why am I not going for a walk/writing/writing music/making out with someone".

GTFO shit would be: for some reason, Christian Death songs.

Nah, I'm thinking about things that remind you that you should be somewhere else. Or anywhere else really.

I have one of these. Co-incidentally it also involves an ashtray, maybe because they're symbolic of old pubs? Anyway, it's a large glass ashtray that I bought years ago from a charity shop, although I'm sure it was stolen from a pub at some time. For me it represents the whole period from 1990-1996 which were good times, or more accurately could have been, if I hadn't had my head stuck up my backside.

Could be a whole subthread on why the slow self-erosion of work makes me wanna retreat to the slow self-erosion of the pub tbh.

Hmm, maybe a horsey ashtray is a brave stab at making an ugly place beautiful whereas a classroom is a determined drive to make beautiful things ugly.

Also I wish I'd joined the Navy when I was 16.

Get in the car, start it up, radio begins playing "Don't Fear the Reaper," drive as fast and as far as you can without looking back.

considering whether or not to re-up for another year in this bright-lights-big-city place where I don't know anyone and feel lonely all the time or instead to go back home to family and friends but also possible permanent unemployment is also exactly this, I think.

Can't find a suitable picture, but imagine a late 70's jukebox with actual 45s in it (singles dating from mid 80's to early 90's).
