I'll take the new one over Star Trek 1 and 5 but not 3.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

first contact is dece but it feels more like a boring action movie to me than 2k9 does. also the borg queen is lame and ruined the concept of the borg imo

call all destroyer, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

are you mad? alice krige slays eric bana. how does queen ruin borg more than face tats ruin romulans?

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

the concept of the borg was that it was a collective and no individual stood out/was in charge. so it ruined the concept. i know eric bana was lame tho.

It is def. the only good TNG movie, though, by a long shot. Tough choice!

"the concept of the borg was that it was a collective and no individual stood out/was in charge. so it ruined the concept."
dictators ruined communism, too, but they make for better villains.
flat organizational structures aren't particularly threatening. they might as well have foosball tables and every day is casual friday.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

First Contact is on Sci-Fi now - like the other Next Generation movies it feels like a long episode.

2k9 is very good in the first half (when it's funny and introducing all the characters) but bogs down in the action-film part.

smashing aspirant (milo z), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

i'll let the newness win me over and go with 2k9, though tbh neither of them are as good as the better TOS movies. i enjoyed both nonetheless

Nhex, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

"First Contact marked the introduction of the Borg Queen (who would reappear throughout the series Star Trek: Voyager) at the behest of studio execs who pointed out that, without her, it would basically be a Star Trek zombie movie. Keep in mind they said this like it was a bad thing."

smashing aspirant (milo z), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

First Contact easy.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:45 (sixteen years ago)

2k9 imo

Star Trek 09 without hesitation.

hmm, let's see, a Star Trek movie starring Patrick Stewart, or a Star Trek movie starring the guy from Princess Diaries 2...you fucking shitbags, how is this even a question!?!?

some dude, Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

The guy from Princess Diaries 2 was very good in it, I thought.

I watched that YouTube review a month or so back, and haven't been able to take First Contact seriously ever since. It was never my favourite, anyway. None of the TNG movies have been great. Would definitely vote a for a couple of the original cast movies over 2K9...

But 2K9 it is.

President Danny Glover (Millsner), Saturday, 23 January 2010 06:11 (sixteen years ago)

First Contact is decent, but none of the other TNG movies are any good. However, none of the TNG movies are as awful as Star Trek V, either.

manichean ramen (latebloomer), Saturday, 23 January 2010 06:35 (sixteen years ago)

Though they are pretty forgettable in a way the utterly batshit Star Trek V isn't, so maybe Star Trek V wins.

It all balances out somehow, I'm sure.

manichean ramen (latebloomer), Saturday, 23 January 2010 06:36 (sixteen years ago)

The Borg queen was hot. Locutus should have at least given her a shot.

some dude, Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:43 (sixteen years ago)

I was pretty disappointed with the new Star Trek movie. The thing I like about Star Trek, as opposed to many other sci-fi series, is that it isn't merely an action/adventure romp in space. The best episodes usually revolve around cool sci-fi concepts, and conflicts are often solved with brains and negotiation and diplomacy, not always by fighting. The new movie felt more like a Michael Bay sci-fi/action flick with Star Trek characters.

It's been years since I saw First Contact, I remember that one was pretty action-driven too, but not as dumbed down as the 2009 movie. So I'm gonna fote for FC.

One of my favourite TOS episodes is the one which ends with the Federation and the Klingons about to have a huge battle, but suddenly the primitive dudes turn out to be non-corporeal beings and head beardo says "oh hai! we find it incredibly distasteful to meddle in other people's affairs, but WTH we're going to anyway! this fight isn't gonna happen, oak-hay?". Now imagine how pissed off everybody would be if the ST reboot movie had ended like that. The movies all need to end with some serious butt kicking action.

OTM across the board. I was sorta into 2k9 Trek but totally lost interest once Leonard Nimoy shows up and they're actually fighting Romulans and so on - BOR-ING. Whereas the character stuff was all really nicely executed. I barely remember First Contact.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 23 January 2010 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

iow, i abstain from voting on this one.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 23 January 2010 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

That's true of the shows, but it's never been true of the movies.

True enough, but I thought the 2009 movie was the worst offender of all the movies in this regard. There was nothing particularly "Star Trek" about it except the characters, it could've easily been any generic sci-fi action flick.

Tuomas, Saturday, 23 January 2010 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I like First Contact's "fuck continuity/canon" attitude more than ST2009's attempt to reference every single original series episode. but ST2009 is a lot better made imo.

abanana, Saturday, 23 January 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Were I a Trekkie with a proper investment in the characters, I would doubtless like First Contact more. But I'm pretty agnostic about the franchise, and 09 was a hell of a lot more fun and, yes, well made.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Saturday, 23 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

all the trekkies i know prefer 2k9 trek

yakko warner (cankles), Saturday, 23 January 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

it also suffers from having do too much.

introduce all the concepts, characters and have a plot in its self.

Has anyone ever done a 'first movie' of a well known brand just assuming we know most of the background already? I mean that's the reason we came to see the movie, right?

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 23 January 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

Also the 1st movie often has way more exposition than the pilot episode, are we there to see the origin story?

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 23 January 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

that youtube review upthread makes a good point about picard in the tv series being this ultra-ethical man of honour, always choosing violence as as last resort, and movie picard being this really awkward gung ho action hero

I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

its just mirroring the latent desire of Trekkies to see the series really let go, Star Trek is always pretty restrained on the space battles front, the characters just get dragged along for the ride.

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 23 January 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Guy Ritchie has made a "Sherlock Holmes" film where he's played by Robert Downey as a 19th-century James Bond/ bareknuckle-boxing superhero with washboard abs

this is kinda hard! just saw 2K9 and really enjoyed it, just a fun fun movie.

System, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

regarding that youtube review, stuff like troi not acting robotic or picard dropping a priceless set decoration really doesn't bother me. fuck that shit, just tell a good story and be fun.

abanana, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

This is really hard, the new one is much more exciting/rollercoaster, but the old one has better developed characters (I still haven't fully mentally merged the characters with the new actors...)

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

all the TNG movies are bad, just cuz this one is least bad still doesn't make it a decent film. ST09 all the way.

Wrinkles, I'll see you on the other side (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

i liked that, except for sulu, everyone in the new one basically just did their best impressions of the original cast. it did feel more like a sexy super modern remake than star trek begins in that sense

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

that approach doesn't really bother me at all, the characters are so perfectly crafted to begin with. they're like archetypes at this point - just keep the basic underpinnings in place and write some new stories (and some decent villains plz!) for the characters, that's all I ask.

Wrinkles, I'll see you on the other side (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

There's a kind of litmus test where I feel like it's not really Star Trek unless it would piss off right-wingers, and as great a fanfiction as ST:09 is, it fails to capture that quality.
ST:II has that problem, too, but it's so great I give it a pass, and as fun as ST:09 is, it's not as great as ST:II.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, now that I think about it, ST:II has a single unwed mom who is career-minded and independent, so I guess it qualifies as true Trek!

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 13 February 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

Besides the fact that the 2009 ST is hampered by a generic sci-fi action plot, I think TNG simply has one of the best ensemble casts ever, better than in the original series. The actors in the new movie aren't bad, but I'll take Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner over them anyday.

Tuomas, Saturday, 13 February 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but ST:II also is the first Trek to explicitly state that Starfleet = "the military" (which must have pissed Roddenberry off to no end), and the peacenik anti-military David Marcus comes around to respect his dad and the military by the end of the movie.

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Saturday, 13 February 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)
