people who ask for rewards when they return something valuable that you've lost

a friend of mine lost her phone the other night and the person who found it has asked her for a reward. i don't know what he/she wants but presumably she won't get the phone back if she doesn't comply.

this is pretty much a total dick move, right? has this ever happened to you? what did you do?

reward is when you give somebody something, I think you meant ransom

i don't think it's unreasonable for the person to hope or even expect some sort of reward, but holding the thing for ransom is out of control

Well, when it happened to me w/bicycle in jr high, my cop uncle came with me in plainclothes to collect (who'd meet a stranger alone for this sort of thing anyway? idk). This is more than a dick move, it is extortion. Can your friend borrow a cop?

It is pretty much a total dick move, and Jordan's last post is OTM. What can you do in such a situation though? the finder totally has you over a barrel. I guess you could call the cops? It might lead to the situation becoming totally protracted though. I would call the cops, personally.

J0rdan mostly OTM, but I certainly don't think one should ever "expect" a reward. Hope for one, sure.

she hasn't called the guy back yet but she plans on showing up with a strong, scary-looking guy in tow

In the UK if the finder refuses to give it back this would count as theft

Bringing along a big man might cause a situation to escalate. I would call the cops for advice, portraying self as someone who is worried but does not necessarily feel entitled to help because of the delicacy of the situation. If you are in NYC or London you might get short shrift, but within this framework cops are often happy to help. Also if there's a chance the guy is going to jerk your friend around she's going to need to report it stolen for insurance, yes? All roads lead to speaking to cops.

agree with suzy. yr friend should ditch the scary guy idea and phone the police or possibly (is this possibly in NYC?) just find a policeman near the place she's going to collect the item.

she should bring along a big scary cheesesteak and then offer it as a reward

oh bring the big guy. there's no reason for you to show up alone to meet a potentially stabby stranger.

Liz Lemon brought Kenneth who had Tracy's money hidden inside his page jacket, and they paid the extortioner with that. So there's your answer.

man this totally happened to me a few years back. i was at a local beer/pizza place and my car was broken into. my phone was the only thing of value in there and it was gone. my friend tj and i went to some friends' to watch a movie afterward and he gets a call during the movie. it's a dude calling him from my phone. he recognized tj's name in my contacts. this guy was a local crackhead/elvis impersonator (used loosely) who was known to disrupt local bands demanding to take the stage and do his routine and other such nonsense. very annoying character. anyway, he claimed he found my phone in a dumpster downtown. he offered to sell it back to me for $20. i said no, what you're going to do is take it back to vino's where you stole it from my car and give it to the manager and i'll be back for it later! he wouldn't have it and after some harsh words hung up and quit answering. i had to let that phone go.

ran into the dude a few months later while i was playing pool at another bar. he was all friendly. "you remember me?!" i said, "yeah i do. you're the asshole who stole my phone and then tried to sell it back to me." he got all offended and acted like i hurt his feelings.

oh, and about a month later i was crawling in the back of my station wagon to get something and there was one of those long black cd wallets in there. i've never owned one so i was confused. inside were 10 or so scratched to hell cdrs of rap albums and right in the middle of the thing was a gnarly crack pipe! i'd been driving around for a month with a crack pipe in the back!

Yes, I assumed the same.
