I lurk on a couple of other boards (between 1 and 3), but only post on ilx.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

I generally only look at ILX, tho there are a few various subject-specific Q&A boards I consult from time to time, as needed.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

ILX, Metafilter, Electrical Audio, reddit, and sometimes the Ex-Scientologist Message Board for the fascinating/insane/disturbing stories. So 5.

ctrl-s, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

just ilx, i like to lurk on local newspaper talk forums to gawk at racism & feel superior but i don't think it counts

harbl, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

just ilx but sometimes I end up reading a thread or two on other sites when they show up in search results

same answer as curtis. my other internet time sinks are google reader and livejournal.

Maria, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

i think maybe just by see what others write in this thread i might start nerding it up on a few more message boards

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:45 (sixteen years ago)

only ilx, although I occasionally scan others if I find an interesting thread on google.

I look at many message board.

i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

i was just thinking tonight about the loathing i have for grad course discussion boards because they have rules and you need to use capitalization and no one is funny

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:01 (sixteen years ago)

haah yeah that's the problem i had with an online course i took. and the guy who signed his name in purple comic sans ~*~Chris~*~ and i couldn't even make fun of him for it.

harbl, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

anyway non-plain text msg boards are annoying

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

I look at some others once in a while and used to more often...but I still voted 1 just cause, I dunno, I look at ilx about 1000x as much as anything else

iatee, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

a soccer board and a skyscraper board. only post here though

jeepski, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

2 -- ilx and a knoxville-centric board that has helped keep me in touch with friends and the city during my years in nyc, and will be a help in getting me reacclimated as we move back there. (although i'll probably post there less once i'm actually back in knoxville, for various reasons.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

i look at a redsox board too but i kind of hate the ppl there and try not to read it too much

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

I find message boards to be a valuable source of technical information - like if something goes wrong with OSX or my iPhone or I need to reformat my hard drive or buy a new camera I can usually find good threads covering my exact problem or need on other message boards.

but for just shooting the breeze etc, ILX is the only one

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Thursday, 28 January 2010 04:34 (sixteen years ago)

Lurk at a couple of others, mainly 2+2 (poker site).

the end times are coming, but they're just the beginning (WmC), Thursday, 28 January 2010 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

If LJ comms dont count, theres one I lurk on and one (Whirlpool, an Aus DSL/broadband forum) I occasionally post on, but apart from ILX my interwebbing is all either directly work-related bore, or general reading.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:45 (sixteen years ago)

Lurk all over, but ILX is the only place I post

ben bernankles (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:48 (sixteen years ago)

post on ilx & a few miami hurricanes boards

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

post on . . . a few miami hurricanes boards

bet those boards are exciting

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:57 (sixteen years ago)

Currently 3, or 4 during select 3-month intervals. (But #s 2, 3 and the on-again/off-again 4 are just casual flings; ILM/ILX is still the love of my life.)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 28 January 2010 09:09 (sixteen years ago)

so i was thinking: does nerding it up on message boards allow you to seem more laid back and cool like when you meet your significant other's friends at the pub cuz you don't have that need to yak about some minutiae cuz you already circumnavigated it with other nerds on message boards? i think i do or atleast i feel like i do but i am still pretty nerdy around them.

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

This, and another small board with about 15 people.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

ILX takes up enough of my time on its own, I daren't get into any others.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

only have eyez 4 ilx

2 - ILX and electro-music.com

might seem normal (snoball), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

One other - being the one that first got me into this board lark but which now seems very dull and slow next to you, ilx (imagine!). But I only look at it from time to time and post there maybe two or three times a year. So I'll say 1-3, because I do follow and regularly contribute to a blog or two, and they're sort of like message boards in their way.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

so i was thinking: does nerding it up on message boards allow you to seem more laid back and cool

you can probably stop that thought right there

also is it just me or are most message boards really just cliques of peeps who don't necessarily want to hear what yr opinion might be on their thread . . .

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

it's just you

i don't know dude, i feel part of the clique here but on other boards . . .

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

i selected just ilx - sometimes i use the message board on the Blue Jays site - but i loath most the posters there. you guys a'ight.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

i regularly look a local music board for info only, not discussion, have posted maybe 10 times in many years
so many msg boards so unbelievably annoying/dumb. maybe i haven't found the nerdy niche-info board for me yet tho? ha
ilx all the way

mind crystals over matter (rrrobyn), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

The layouts of most other message boards I've ever glanced at have given me a headache.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:28 (sixteen years ago)

I get paid to look at a bunch of message boards I would otherwise never visit. Most of these are in languages that aren't English so I can't even read them!

Other than that, only ILX, unless I'm searching for information about something and google leads me to a message board.

salsa sharkshavin (salsa shark), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

xpost yea i like that you can change the way ilx looks and it's search function is better than some others

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

Also, no avatars, quotes attached to posts, star ratings and what have you. An excellent signal to noise ratio.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

yea ilx is no nonsense. no ratings except suggest ban
although you can write a thing in yr profile

and there ya go mods:
can you make the stylesheets so that the language can be changed; could that even work? i know english to spanish or french wouldn't be that big of a deal but like english to mandarin or hindi?

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

i've checked out other ones but it's pretty amazing how most other message boards have the same level of discourse as the comments sections in news stories. they kinda give me a morbs level of cynicism about the future.

a morbs level of cynicism is alot of cynicism, right?

also mark that's just the imustprotest board, i didn't see anything about suggest bans

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Friday, 29 January 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

ilx and gamedev are the only ones i read really, the latter purely for educational reasons.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Friday, 29 January 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

oops: This is the thread where we ask "what is our current bannage total?"

Mark G, Friday, 29 January 2010 00:18 (sixteen years ago)

rock, thanks mark i just asked.

thatwillultimatelyresultingalaxy-galaxymergersonacosmictimescale (jdchurchill), Friday, 29 January 2010 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

My two other message boards pertain entirely to hiking and backpacking. This is my beloved hobby and therefore it is the most important thing on earth to talk about. For everything else, there is ilx.

rogue whizzing (Eazy), Friday, 29 January 2010 01:56 (sixteen years ago)

I read a couple of other ones but never really post anywhere (not even here that much). Mostly I read for specific hobby or necessary information purposes and appreciate the minimalism and general level of intellect here after the flashy horribleness of so many other places. The one devoted to my car model is the worst - mostly gaudy flashing shit surrounding sub OMGWTFLOL level postings.

I'm on ILX and the old Stylus board, that's pretty much it.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 29 January 2010 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

By "old Stylus board" I mean "Stylus ex-staff board."

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 29 January 2010 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

and not the "playing records with really old needles" board.

Mark G, Friday, 29 January 2010 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

Man reading this thread, I feel so geeky for reading 3-5 message boards. I lurk on all of them mostly.

Jibe, Friday, 29 January 2010 08:55 (sixteen years ago)

I am on ILX + 1 local board which is much slower than ILX + spend free evenings in 1 small chatroom but I'm overlooking the distinction since ILX is actually more real-time than a slow chatroom. (Though I guess people aren't counting twitter or facebook, which could be in the same category. I'm not on either.)

There are a couple more communities I've drifted into and out of over the past decade but apparently 3 online communities is all I can keep up with at once. Occasionally I find a new one, but it always seems to work out that I don't have time to check them all and one of the old ones gets knocked out.
