Did anyone else read this as a youth?
is it weird that I want to re-read it?

The first five issues of the original Elfquest comic ("The Quest Begins") have some battle violence and no explicit sexuality. In addition to some intense battle scenes in issue #17 of the original "Grand Quest", there is a controversial orgy scene: controversial because many children had been following the comics and parents were not happy with the more explicit/adult content introduced later in the series.

This is one of those things where the library had the first book and I was really sucked into it but couldn't find the second for the life of me, and then when it became clear that there were like, thirty books or something I just sort of gave up.

Reading the above I can see maybe why the library let its subscription lapse.

I read the first four collections from the library and sort of followed up thereafter. I definiely had some later collections, compiling arcs from after the line had split into several separate titles. I was always curious about those "elfquest in the FUTURE" stories but never read any of them at the time.

ha, totally guilty. i had the first series, maybe 20 issues or so? i'm not sure how long it went on (or if it's still going, for all i know). the sex parts somehow convinced me as a teenager that it was ok to be reading a comicbook about elves.

Whoa, I was thinking about Elfquest all last week. They're at so many public libraries but they never seem to get checked out. I was p into them when I was 13-14. Thanks for the link, ian!

man this comic will forever be linked in my mind with an ardent fan I knew -

this hardcore nerd-girl in highschool who was really into drawing Elfquest-esque people, faeries and whatnot

she had a mohawk and was considered a freak at our school

she burned her fosterparent's house down by accident, got kicked out, got pregnant

not sure what became of her after that but I heard she was working as a maid

Elfquest, you take me back

when i was about 12, my much-older sister somehow ended up renting some space from the owner editors of comics journal, kim and gary. i was totally not a comics loving kid, but i ended up with a 5 year comp subscription to comics journal, which was weird. i had a totally cj mediated existence with comics- i bought none, but read all of the comics journals that i got. i learned about all that early 80s shit- which in my recollection covers like, love and rockets, cerebus, elfquest, frank miller's early career. also, all the eisner worship, and the odd side trips into sf stuff. and weird shit like, i don't know any of his writing, but i remember the harlan ellison interview and ensuing beef.

so i can't say i was a consumer of it directly, but it is truly a part of my recollection of my adolescence. i totally remember doodling those elves.

i bought elfquest and love and rockets and cerebus and frank miller's stuff and everything will eisner AND i bought the comics journal. and i was, like, 12. no wonder i'm so fucked up.

actually, love & rockets was a little later probably.

when i was 12/13 i would save up the money i made from my paper route and order stuff from the rip off press. my parents had no idea i was getting bizarre sex and slow death and doper dan in the mail. i was obsessed with the furry freak brothers and crumb. but honestly i think i just bought elfquest for the hot elves at first. plus the early 80's color magazine format just looked awesome to me.

cuz i wasn't really a D&D sword & sorcery kid at all.

scott seward, Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

read all of these at my local library around 12-14. i remember one time a female friend was flipping through one of the book (cause they were collected in those nice big hard covers) and she turned to the orgy scene and was like, "oh, i see why u like these" i was very ashamed.

Mordy, Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

was a D&D sword & sorcery kid, lived for comics, sci-fi & fantasy novels/films, role playing games, endless geekery etc. hated and still hate elfquest.
