is this only a canadian thing, or do americans say it too (to refer to incoming college/uni students)?

I've heard it said in America.
― sarahel, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
i've definitely heard it before but i wouldn't say that it's common
― big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
in my mind it's old slang, something people might have said in the '40s-'50s?
― congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
i have never heard anyone say this word
― you have to forgive me (surm), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

― big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
first time i saw it i thought it was a typo because what other explanation is there, it's dumb
― harbl, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
u a frosh, brah?
― ('_') (omar little), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
Where I went to college they were conscientious about the semantics of "freshman," and I think the official term was "first-years" but that was a bit unwieldy, so frosh was used - primarily colloquially, maybe by preppier types, then other people making fun of the preppier types.
― sarahel, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
"Frosh" is kinda pish posh.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
In the USA "frosh" is very outdated slang. It goes back to the 1940s at least, but is rarely if ever used nowadays. It was already well on its way out in 1969, when I was a freshman in high school. It was the kind of anachronistic thing that hung around mainly because it fit well in newspaper headlines.
― Aimless, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
it was still semi-common to hear it in the 80s, at least on my campus
― velko, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)
and in the 90s on mine; also "pre-frosh"
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)
Tracer and I went to the same college at the same time, fwiw
― sarahel, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

try "fresher"
― take me to your lemur (ledge), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
so not that common, but you'd understand it if you heard it?

yah
― congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

the word frosh should be a delicious coffee drink
― lukevalentine, Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)
also "pre-frosh"
In one of the art classes I was in, one of the other students made a fake campus map as a class project to distribute to "pre-frosh" visiting campus.

frosh was the beverage of choice on my campus, as recently as 2 years ago
― you want it to be some dude, but it's the other dude (dyao), Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:43 (sixteen years ago)
We were also called "first-years" and it always irritated the hell out of me. I don't think I've ever heard anyone except sports ppl actually use "frosh".
― t(o_o)t (ENBB), Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:47 (sixteen years ago)
totally said on my campus in the early 90s, especially as part of "pre-frosh"
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)
we were called first-years but it made sense because a lot of people were on 5-year programs to do co-ops so it went up to fifth-year instead of senior
― harbl, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:13 (sixteen years ago)
we were called first-years and it made sense b/c 55% of the class was not men
― max, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:14 (sixteen years ago)
does it even matter though
― harbl, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)
whoooa there is a year above senior? that fux with the hierarchy imo

― velko, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:28 (sixteen years ago)
went to sarahel's and Tracer's school; "pre-frosh" was standard through 2001
― horseshoe, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:29 (sixteen years ago)
this was def. used on my suburban Seattle HS campus, c. early 2000s
― zvincter (The Reverend), Monday, 1 February 2010 02:18 (sixteen years ago)
So, it would appear from this thread that "frosh" is experiencing a mini-revival, based solely on its filling the need for a handy gender-neutral term for freshmen. Which is ironoic, given that it used to have a fairly derogatory connotation.
― Aimless, Monday, 1 February 2010 02:46 (sixteen years ago)
that's it, i object to being called human.

― harbl, Monday, 1 February 2010 03:26 (sixteen years ago)
heard that used at my HS around 2000; "frosh/soph" was the level before JV or Varsity, so there'd be frosh/soph baseball and etc.
― musically, Monday, 1 February 2010 03:30 (sixteen years ago)
Froshsoph sounds like a barren arctic hell planet in a fantasy novel.
