too tasty

I agree with the premise of this thread. Throw some canned peaches in there and you reach chow hall heaven.

it is like a magical food

SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Saturday, 6 February 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

small curd? large curd? 2% or 4%?

SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Saturday, 6 February 2010 08:11 (fifteen years ago)

My curd preference depends on the season. In the winter, I prefer a larger, hardier curd. During the summer months, I enjoy a refreshing small curd cottage cheese.

Sometimes I go reeely krazeee and get the whole-fat cottage cheese. But I make sure to wear my hair socks the next week.

love the cottage cheese. small curd more than large curd, but i'm not that fussy. don't like it with fruit, tho. i don't understand why it's packaged and sold that way.

love it with a good thick spicy soup or chili. you can just pour the soup over a dollop of cottage cheese, the c.c. cuts the spice heat and adds some creaminess.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 6 February 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

I love cottage cheese & eat it all the time, but when I was a teenager I got yelled at by an old man for trespassing on his lawn. He'd just eaten cottage cheese and the singular way it coated his mouth with a milky film and free-floating white chunks will probably never leave my mind.

vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Saturday, 6 February 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

I pretty much only like it just by itself. I especially don't care for it in lasagna, where it tends to make everything too watery.

j., Friday, 19 September 2014 00:23 (ten years ago)

omg

Cottage cheese can be eaten by itself, with fruit and sugar, with salt and pepper, with fruit puree, on toast, with tomatoes, with granola and cinnamon, as a chip dip, as a replacement for mayonnaise in tuna or chicken salad, in salads, or used as an ingredient in recipes such as jello salad and various desserts. Cottage cheese with fruit such as pears or peaches is a standard side dish in many "home cooking" or meat-and-three restaurants' menus in the United States.

like… tuna sandwich tuna salad?

i can't even comprehend

j., Friday, 19 September 2014 00:24 (ten years ago)

It must be pointed out that loving cottage cheese can totally depend on where you live. In NZ, cottage cheese was one of my favourite foods ever. So satisfyingly dense, so salty and creamy. Mm. Now I live in Canada, and it is inedible here. Even the full-fat variety is total bullshit. Just soupy and tasteless and disgusting.

Dairy products in general are shit here, really. Quite amazing what a different it makes when you actually allow cows out to pasture.

Cottage cheese, I miss you. You are one of the first things I get at the shops when I go home to visit.

franny glasshole (franny glass), Friday, 19 September 2014 01:29 (ten years ago)

Whats the diff between cottage cheese and ricotta? I've ever worked that out.

I thought it had a bit of a hipster resurgence a couple years ago. At any rate it's delicious

J. Sam, Monday, 8 March 2021 23:58 (four years ago)

Cottage cheese pancakes:

1 cup cottage cheese
3 eggs
2 tbsp melted butter
1/4 cup whole wheat flour

The pancakes have to be little, like 2 inches across or so. The griddle has to be very hot or they will stick (but this is true of all pancakes.) They are delicious.

Was listening to some marketing person from one of the big supermarket chains saying UK cottage cheese producers have more than doubled their sales in the last year. Apparently it's versatility + lots of wellness influencers on tiktok, plus a general trend towards healthy and cheap protein have boosted sales bigtime recently.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 19:58 (five months ago)

I was only saying the same the other day. One brand has now been relabelled as ‘PROTEIN PACK’ in a smaller size at a higher price in Sainsbury’s and it’s regularly sold out. I suspect they may take a little longer to rediscover Glenryck’s pilchards.

mmmm, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 20:28 (five months ago)

apparently, one of the protein loving tiktoks was doing a how to make chips out of cottage cheese bit

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 20:37 (five months ago)

I picked up a 300g tub for 30p at Morrisons tonight. Not sure what I’ll use it for but couldn’t resist at that price.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 20 March 2025 20:21 (five months ago)

this thread reboot persuaded me to buy a small tub again

one thing to note (at least here): the tub & lid are #5 plastic, which as far as I know NOBODY recycles (maybe it's different in the EU).. so landfill bound, unless I wanna store paint in it or something

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 20 March 2025 21:38 (five months ago)

i love cottage cheese

budo jeru, Thursday, 20 March 2025 21:46 (five months ago)

I can eat like a few spoonfuls of it, and enjoy it, but not much more

calstars, Thursday, 20 March 2025 21:47 (five months ago)

fav applications:

on triscuit
in midwest-style lasagna instead of ricotta
solo with salt n p

budo jeru, Thursday, 20 March 2025 21:49 (five months ago)

I can eat a half a small tub ina sitting easily and this disgusts everyone close to me for some reason. Looking forward to trying on a triscuit in an attempt to normalize how I consume the stuff

that really sucks about the #5 though, obvs

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:29 (five months ago)

not cream cheese, I mean cottage obv

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:29 (five months ago)

I stand slightly corrected:

the safest rule to stick to is recycling only number 1 and 2 plastics. But you should also check with your local recycling program to see which types of plastics it accepts, as some facilities recycle, for example, polypropylene (number 5), the plastic commonly used in yogurt containers.

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:34 (five months ago)

Growing up (Midwest, 1960s-ish), "diet plates" were a hamburger patty and a scoop of cottage cheese on a ring of canned pineapple. My grandma also made a "salad" that was lime jello with canned pineapple and cottage cheese embedded. We'd also have lunch that was cottage cheese with canned peaches as a fancy treat.

For these nostalgic reasons, I love cottage cheese with fruit. My ex would stir grape jelly into his, which was a nope for me.

Jaq, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:36 (five months ago)

Wow. I listened to a judge John Hodgman podcast where they talked about weird Midwest salads - and that would fit right in.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 21 March 2025 00:42 (five months ago)

scoop of cottage cheese on a ring of canned pineapple

I remember the 'diet plate' patty meal, sometimes the cottage cheese came on a canned pear half on a lettuce leaf

I actually ordered one not that long ago when I was super hung over

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:49 (five months ago)

My ex would stir grape jelly into his

I use Ikea lingonberry preserves

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 21 March 2025 00:51 (five months ago)

I have it all the time with a diced tomato, salt and pepper

octobeard, Friday, 21 March 2025 01:12 (five months ago)

Love it on toast BUT it needs salt (and pepper imo but AT LEAST salt), and it’s really hard to find without guar gum additive. The only kind I can find in NY is the brand GOOD which is fine. But the real queen is Michigan Cottage Cheese. Yes that’s the brand name. Yes the label is a type abomination. But the cottage cheese is superlative. (This is the major leftover container in my mom’s fridge btw.)

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 21 March 2025 01:40 (five months ago)

I find CC very salty, amazed you add it!

(large curd, creamed ftw)

teeny tiny smol curds

fight for the right to remain silent (outdoor_miner), Friday, 21 March 2025 02:09 (five months ago)

LOL creamed means it has some heavy cream added. Without cream it's more like ricotta, just the dry curds.

Jaq, Friday, 21 March 2025 03:20 (five months ago)

My wife made cottage cheese ice cream once, it was very good.

cottage cheese with pineapple chunks <3

mookieproof, Friday, 21 March 2025 06:00 (five months ago)

yeah cottage cheese is so versatile and very moreish for something that is actually quite healthy. When I say versatile I haven't done much else with it other than toast, pizza toppings, sandwiches, jacket spuds.

Longley Farm is my brand because it was since I was a kid and from a local dairy farm, although it's probably owned by Kraft these days.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 21 March 2025 06:21 (five months ago)

Still independent according to their website. Very tempted to see if I can get a mandarin yogurt as it’s a nice balance between sweet and tart.
