bet it's not as bad as 'from paris with love'
― just1n3, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
is it basically "leaving los nashville"?
― wallomangina (s1ocki), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
way way way worse
― just1n3, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)
1. totally predictable, even by me who is usually shit at predicting plotlines
2. funny quips at the start (sort of) quickly degenerated into pathetic cliched lame terrible awful dialog
3. boring boring boring action/fight scenes
4. gahhhhhhhhhh really wish we'd gone to see fish tank instead
― just1n3, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)
better movies are out there
― Milton Parker, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)
it really is like trying to be The Wrestler meets Walk The Line, but doesn't build up any of the characters as real and multi-dimensional. it's totally enamored with it's own story line, which has the subtlety of a lifetime movie. just awful shit. and the ticket was fucking $12.50
― Groanatta77 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)
at least we only paid $9.50 for out tickets
― just1n3, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)
i mean, it was like a half-assed story and some decent jokey dialogue, which tbh means you're better off watching Walk Hard: The Dewy Cox Story
― Groanatta77 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)
the first 20 minutes were really incredible, but then just provided nothing to back them up
kinda bummed, hoped against hope this might be payday II
― da croupier, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)
Should I still watch my DVD screener of this, or is even that not worth it?
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
It totally sucks.
jeff bridges poll!
― Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)
This was not that bad at all - Bridges is great. Mostly I liked that it didn't try to be unnecessarily dark/intense, and I liked the way the relationships panned out, esp wrt Bridges and Farrell, who are set up as rivals but just have too much in common to rag on each other for long.
― Simon H., Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
Great music and performances but I don't know why they dragged it out to almost two hours. The middle is interminable as you await Bridges' inevitable turn at fucking everything up.
Would have preferred a faux-documentary about a washed up country singer fucking his way across the country (ie the first 20-30 minutes).

Both Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings claimed it was written about them.
― Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)
way better than half the fucking garbage showing up on that '00s poll.
JB & MG are the movie; solid American film acting that elevates a formula story. Stick to high-school film noirs if that thrills ya tho.
(Soto and I already fought about this on the Bridges thread.)

Did we? I am surprised I'm the skeptic though.

Armond White is with you.
At least he'll win his Oscar for something better than Lebowski, tho well short of Cutter's Way.

so is this worse than away we go? (if such a thing is possible.)
― by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)
also, a recommendation: people should see the totally slept-on rip torn country music flick FORTY SHADES OF BLUE. it's not amazing, but it's good. and very nicely shot.
― by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)
It bums me out that everyone's so down on this movie. What the hell!
Cosign Morbius re: the acting elevating the story. That Jeff Bridges can walk around half-lit looking almost as bad as he surely smells with his pants unbuckled most of the time and *still* make me fall in love with him is a pretty big achievement. Well, not big. Since I love him anyway. But he's gross and somehow it's not a stretch to see Maggie make out with him. And him and Maggie have such great chemistry!
(though my husband noted that the reason the matinee was so full of seniors was because all the old dudes wanted to see Jeff Bridges make out with a hot chick.)
I enjoyed it so much I'm seeing it again next Tuesday. Harrumph
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)
thought it was OK acting-wise but one cliche after another in the story dept. and the chemistry between ol' bad and maggie's character was non-existent.

To the surprising list of people who benefit from Oscar nominations – stylists, make-up artists, awards consultants, bloggers – let’s add Thomas Cobb, author. Mr. Cobb, 62, wrote the novel “Crazy Heart,” which was the basis of the movie that’s meant to give Jeff Bridges his long-overdue Academy Award. First published 23 years ago, the book was well received but sold only about 11,000 copies; re-released on Feb. 2 by HarperCollins – complete with photo of Mr. Bridges on the cover – it has already racked up five times that in sales and pre-orders....
“Chuck Barris of the ‘Gong Show’ was the first person to option it, in ’87,” Mr. Cobb said. “He had a director lined up, Jim McBride, who did ‘The Big Easy.’”
“I didn’t realize it at the time,” Mr. Cobb said, “but there’s a lot of Donald Barthelme in Bad Blake.” (Er, spoiler!)
“He was my dissertation director,” Mr. Cobb continued, “and we played in a band together in Houston. I owe a great deal of my career to Donald Barthelme.”

Forty Shads of Blue > this movie
― queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)
huh that's interesting. I just read the big Donald Barthelme bio and now I kind of want to see the movie to try and determine the parallels (other than alcoholism and sleeping with younger women, I guess)
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)
wouldn't argue esp, but Dina Korzun > Rip Torn in that moviexp
Must all "C&W drunk" films be compared? Kinda superficial.
― Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)
Barthelme connection is intriguing. This is playing at my local right now, I may try to see it, but only if I don't have to pay for it.xpost

Saw this tonight and for once I'm with Morbs. I didn't really buy into the love story much but Bridges more than held my attention for the whole film. Plus I thought it got something right in the details of touring and music venues that very few movies do and I appreciated that, like for once I actually felt like I was in a real club or a real backstage.
Also I liked the sobering up part - I was just waiting for a terrible, dump the liquor down the toilet scene and instead it's just like hey, rehab. Nice cameo by Duvall as well.

Yeah I enjoyed this. Good acting all around.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Sunday, 14 March 2010 06:10 (fifteen years ago)
I knew he would sober up early on when the name of the guy who gave him a bottle was Bill Wilson.
but yeah this was good. I'm glad it didn't go the predictable "character destroyed by demons" route. bridges is excellent. I really liked that they didn't appear to overdub any of his singing either.
― akm, Sunday, 14 March 2010 06:59 (fifteen years ago)
Does Colin F actually sing in this? It sounded like it was him but I wasn't sure.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Sunday, 14 March 2010 07:01 (fifteen years ago)
Yup, that's him singing.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 14 March 2010 07:10 (fifteen years ago)

― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Sunday, 14 March 2010 07:15 (fifteen years ago)
he sounded so good I assumed it wasn't him. i wish they'd done his vocals live though, I think they did with Bridges, or he's a much much better lip syncher.
― akm, Sunday, 14 March 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)
Colin Ferrell didn't show up in the main credit sequence at the end of the movie, but he did show up in the scrolling credits. Anybody know why? (I don't; just curious is all.)
― henry s, Sunday, 14 March 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
Good vomiting in the film, too. Also glad that the wacky Coen Brothers dialogue ("I can offer you all the free bowling you'd like") was limited to a scene or two.
― henry s, Sunday, 14 March 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)
henry, it's a contractual thing. If he got billing in the ads or upfront, he'd have to get Colin Farrell Money. I assume he just wanted to work with Bridges.

OK I'm like 40 minutes into this and bridges is great as were the first 20 mins and the sndtrk but now I'm worried it's all down hill from here based on what some of you said. :/

and actually you're wrong: Bridgers was never gonna win for True Grit anyway (despite the John Wayne history) because it's a comic performance as opposed to the predictable male post-menopausal I'm-a-loser Oscar bait represented by CH.
