when i was in school i received one through the post and it freaked me out. Later found out it was from a girl i had talked to like once and who i have no idea how she knew where i lived.

when i was a freshman in college this mystery dude would leave letters and presents on my windshield all the time. i parked my car in the same parking lot on M/W and did too i guess. he gave me a stupid bear, a sonic youth single (100%), two mixtapes (pretty good imo), a pavement cd (crooked rain), and i think some candy once. sometimes i would leave notes for him thanking him for whatever it was he left me the last time. why not. i was 18 and lonely because all of my friends went off to college and i didn't.
one day he waited until i went to my car and we met in person. i discovered that he was 1) 27 years old (ie v v old to me at the time), 2) not very cute 3) rolled up his pants in a weird way. he smelled like hair gel.
it also turned out that he lived like 3 blocks from my parents' house, where i also lived.
years later, he was working as a bartender and saw my parents at a restaurant and told them to tell me hi.
that is the end of my secret admirer story.

i should note that this was early spring 1994, my parents saw him in 2002 or so

I once thought about doing this but didn't know the girls address. So instead I just had to ask her out properly, like a dork. We went out for months and had teh fun. Thank god I don't know addresses.

it was kinda weird for this dude, who was markedly older than i was, to do this. i thought that at the time. like, why aren't you dating someone more your age? why are you leaving notes on my car?
he never genuinely creeped me out, though -- mostly i thought he was kind of a nice loser. he worked at a record store. maybe he would get me a job. (he did not)

oh aye and my secret admirer was the niece of this guy (Scottish actor notorious for allegedly being a paedophile):

what was her m.o.? i had a friend who did the most hilarious secret admirer shit EVERshe would call the college radio station and request smiths songs and then write letters to the dj about how she wore black on the outside, etc. it did not yield any results at all.
this still cracks me up for real

oh all she did was send a valentine and stand near me in the schoolyard looking over at me.

failed secret admirer attempts are pretty lol because they are so overwroughtthe aforementioned friend also wrote out lyrics to "yes i am blind" and left it by the dj booth at our teen dance clubthat's hilarious

My friend & I both knew this guy named Mark, who's about ten years older than us and knew us both since we were around 14 or so. At age 22, she's just broken up w/her boyfriend of three years, and Mark runs into both of us at the bar. We both dish with him for a few hours. On the way home, she notices he snuck an unsigned note into her coat pocket, some vague/evocative little portent about attractions coalescing in the future. The next day she calls him and says, "So why'd you leave a note in my coat?" He said, "...I guess I was trying to be mysterious."

Heck I've only once or twice gotten valentines cards from boyfriends as it is. And never flowers or breakfast or dinner :(

i just remembered that one time (maybe a year later?) when i was working at a video store someone left a note on my "[my name]'s picks" shelf but he revealed himself fairly quickly and seemed ok. i was not interested in watching videos at his apartment, but he was not old/weird.

I'd love to do this and have it go down well, but I fear that it's all kinds of sadly weird & creepy, or at the very least awkward.

I have a feeling this works best in the movies. IRL it usually just seems weird and overly premeditated.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah you know I never really thought about it but I guess secretive unsolicited amorous advances are a little... odd, at very least. Just come up and say something, darnit.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)
the rule at my high school was you were allowed to do this if you were a spunk but not if you were a huck.

it's like the admirer wants a prize for being clever even though courting is not a cleverness contestjust say something or keep it to yourself

i've never given anyone an anonymous valentine or love letter fyi.i actually tend to be direct & no-nonsense w/r/t courtship. 'matter of fact' as they say.
― Joint Custody (ian), Monday, 8 February 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah you'll be fine so long as you don't go leaving crepey notes/gifts for barely legal girls.
(I worked at a record store too)
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 8 February 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)
barely legal isn't really my style. more like barely-middle-aged.

I got on in middle school. It was this school organized thing where you could send each other valentines that would then be delivered in homeroom. Basically it was a big popularity contest. So I got a couple from friends and then one from a boy that said "I like you" or some shit like that. I was all blushing and excited until a corner of boys erupted in laughter and I realized it was all a joke. Boys suck basically.

Yeah thats why I'm glad they never did that at my school, it just asks for that awful Lisa vs Ralph Wiggum scenario or other humiliations :(
