For Gmail users not seeing this yet, myself included:
We'll be rolling out Google Buzz to everyone over the next few days; you'll see a new "Buzz" link under "Inbox" when it's on for your account.
― kshighway (ksh), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)
What is this? How is this different from Wave?
― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)
what's the buzz on google buzz? i need to know
― druthers, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)
Will I be able to ignore this after a few hrs like GWave?
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
I think this'll take off.
Hint for Android users: get the new Maps app.

i like how "opening a new browser window" is characterized as a huge impediment to SHARING

Just turned on for me!
― kshighway (ksh), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
also, part of the appeal for facebook/myspace et al is that it allows me to have "friends" that I don't have to deal w/ in my email or similar personal account. I can turn off my e-mail notifications; I can ignore people. if my contacts are driven thru my gmail then all of a sudden I have to potential to be connected to 1000's of people I've dealt w/ a grand total of one (1) time in my life. those 1000's of people now clog up my tidy inbox. Thanks, Google.

Ugh.
― Rockefellatio (SeekAltRoute), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
one of the most obviously annoying things about fb is the fact photos are so small.
― dog latin, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)
the annoying thing abt facebook is that they change their interface every 6 months for no reason
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)
I guess Wave was considered a bust, since it is a sloppy mess. I'm not sure how to feel about it being directly integrated into Gmail - it's good that I'll actually know people who might use it, but that's also a negative as said above... Though I am someone who stays the hell away from Facebook and all such sites anyway.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)
The only reason GBuzz even exists right now is because last week Facebook announced they were going to offer full-out u✧✧✧@faceb✧✧✧.c✧✧ email addresses.
I suspect this is one of those 20% projects Google had laying around that they could activate quickly.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)
Don't think so: Google friends have said they've been using it internally for a while.
I think it could be huge: it's the good bits of Facebook and Twitter without all the shite, and you don't even have to sign up for it, just click through from GMail.
The downside is that it uses your GMail address, and basically puts it in public. I've been hiding mine for years, this blows that to bits. Also the problem with the 1000s of people above.
I'm not sure what I think about its privacy settings yet, either: the good thing about Facebook-when-it-was-good was the way it defaulted everything so that only your friends could see it. Now it, and this, are trying to make as much stuff public as possible, under your real name.
― stet, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:21 (fifteen years ago)
It's definitely not Wave, at least, which was pretty obviously pointless from the get-go.
― stet, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)
― Nhex, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)
(but definitely not BS to the ridiculous extent that Facebook does)
haha wait so this is like saying "congratulations, you have just friended everyone in your inbox"?
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)
It's more subtle than that: it only adds the people you chat/email a lot. It makes it easier to add people you've already emailed than complete strangers, though.
― stet, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)
i'm already checking text messages, email, facebook status updates, twitter, myspace blog updates and my goddamn head to make sure it's screwed on straight
SYSTEM FULL TRY AGAIN LATER
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)
You are not alone in this feeling, Tracer. (Can you post that on Tumblr so I can reblog it and like it?)
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)
The downside is that it uses your GMail address, and basically puts it in public. I've been hiding mine for years, this blows that to bits.
Since it's so ubiquitous I've been using my Gmail address as my public address for years now (I have another as my private address).
I suppose Gbuzz could be useful if it's extensible.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
Also, there's already a slight advantage since it's not Facebook.

― 99. The Juggalo Teacher (dyao), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:16 (fifteen years ago)
oh wait FORGOT ILX IN MY LIST.
They haven't released details yet, but it looks like it's hyper-extensible: everything on it is in an open format that you can syndicate/poll/share/read. In theory you could have a thread here that was shared w/buzz so that updates there would appear here and vice versa. (There's not much point to that, but you get the idea). Total opposite of Facebook's can-we-be-Compuserve shit
― stet, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)
somebody needs to set up a twitter account for ILX and write a script that tweets every post to every board, and feed that into buzz, which feeds back into an ILX thread OH SHIT
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)
it's like setting your phone to divert to another phone and then setting the other phone to divert to your phone
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:19 (fifteen years ago)
and then calling both of them from two other phones
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)
and then one phone randomly shows you a text from three months ago, then no texts, then a text from 10 minutes ago.

― kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)
That's kinda why I'm hoping this takes off. If all my friends are on it, I won't need to check Flickr any more, because those updates will come into this. Same with Twitter. It's already in the same place as email.
― stet, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

You automatically subscribed me to my landlord through Buzz. I can only assume that means he was automatically subscribed to me. You shouldn't do this.

I'll be disabling it soon once i've played with it tho.

The Official GMail blog explains that they've changed from an auto-follow model to an auto-suggest model, so it will suggest people you may want to follow rather than sign you up automatically.
Other changes include not automatically sharing your activity on Picasa or Google Reader, and adding a big, honking off switch to your GMail settings that will actually turn Google Buzz off, not just hide it from view.
― nsuomy (ramon cora), Sunday, 14 February 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)
Just noticed that this not only spams your inbox but fills up your sent mail tab as well, making it far harder to find mails you've sent.
Fuck this.
