dave q says: (well have you SEEN what's in Zones 2,3, and 4? Jesus wept)

ed and suzy are like, c'mon gareth, move to zone 1. zone 1 is where its at

but you know what, i like zone 2 (i'm with dave about 3-6 though, i lived in 4 when i first came here and it felt cut off, i've been in 2 ever since). 2 is good, its the best of everything. as far as i can see with 1 its just crumbling ex local authority blocks reclaimed and resold to the young professional wanting edgy city centre life - only a 12 minute walk to the square mile! wow, marks and spencers closed on a saturday - fantastic!

all the cool shit goes on in 2, and its, like, not deserted on a weekend. have you ever been around 1 on a saturday? huge swathes of it are fucking deserted, and those blocks off new north road or somers town or whatever - grim! 2s got the nice houses too

alright, so bring it on, bring on the 1 vs 2 vs 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 6 FITE! which one are you?

What? Who the hell thinks of London in terms of Zone 1, Zone 2 etc (I'm not having a go at YOU Gareth!) - they're just ways of dividing up the tube map to get the most money out of commuters in fares. This will turn out to be a suburbs v 'town' thread all over again I reckon.

Dr. C, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, you are right of course dr. c. i think i realised that all of the places i actually like hanging around in london seem to be in zone 2, where people actually live

the interesting thing about many of the people who live in zone 1 (or city centre if you prefer), is that they often seem to be either american or canadian. all of the people from the other side of the atlantic that i know seem to have made a beeline for zone1, i wonder if this is something to do with the way american cities are stuctured (eg, new york - where everything does seem to be in manhattan (and that bit of brooklyn just over the bridges))

gareth, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who the hell thinks of London in terms of Zone 1, Zone 2

or to answer this question, americans/canadians?

gareth, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of the best that London has to offer is in z2 (central enough to be accessible, cheaper than z1). Lots of other good stuff in 3-6 also, just that bit harder to get to / harder to persuade other people to get to.

Peckham = z2 is the clincher for Gareth's argument of course.

Living in Zone 3 but being twenty minutes from Oxford Circus, 15 from Liverpool street and even 35 from Brixton means that the zone way of dividing up London really doesn't have much meaning to me. I'd hate (and couldn't afford) to live in zone 1 though, far too uncomfortable.

chris, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dave q said nothing about zones 5 or 6 (he's probably never been there). i am in zone 758 approximately, but i have a house in 6.

Jeff W, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am in zone zero

American/Canadian thing has something to it. In N. America society is more atomised but cities are more centralised, there's one place you can find stuff without having to get involved with other people. It's true that actual ppl live outside Zone 1 but when you get further out you NEED them and that's the part I hate. You just get sick of being told every time you want to do anything, "Yeah it's a bit of inconvenience but you just have to get to know the right ppl", all the fucking time. What if somebody just wants to get things done instead of having to spend countless afternoons watching the neighbour's football videos just as insurance for when they need a lift home next weekend? (Plus in N. America people just get used to living on their own money. I.E. not poncing all the time. I stopped making friends here when I realised that telling people I had a full- time job = fixing a huge sign on my head saying "Free Cigarettes, Get Them Here!") That's how we like to live in the New World. Autonomous units built for detecting situations of maximum convenience!

dave q, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Then again maybe the cigarette thing is a ploy to get me to stop coming around! "Ha ha it worked, he won't be bothering us again", as cartons of unopened duty-free fall out of the overstuffed closet, I'm willing to accept that possibility)

Which zone does Sophie Ellix-Bextor live in?

Sophie #1 Phan, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hampstead, right? 2, I believe.

dave q, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zone 4 is as crap as all the other zones.

DG, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God, I would never ever want to live in zone 1 or 2. Too many buildings, too much noise, too many people, too expensive. I think I just want to move to my rockstar farm house with converted barn studio right now! Anyway, I like the western edge of Zone 4 the best.

jel --, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am in Zone 3. I'd very happily live in Zone 1 if I could afford a big place there, but I can't. This ain't bad: 20 minutes to Liverpool Street.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zone 4: That's where I live, which is why it is the best zone.

Julio Desouza, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

London is too big.

Ally C, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think thinking of London as "zones" is in any way N.American. Maybe people who are used to paying a lot for rent (i.e. manhattenites) don't feel so violated shelling out for a flat in Zone 1?

Anyway, I am an American and I live in Zone 3. I have several canadian and american friends who live in Zone 4, 3, 2 and 1. The proximity to the centre seems to have a direct correlation to their income.

I would probably not be able to afford living in Zone 1 if I wanted to, and I would never live in Docklands or W.London on principle.

marianna, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm American and live in Zone One. I think the real reason I like it so much is a) I don't drive and b) grew up in suburbs, which I hated. I've never, ever lived beyond Z2, probably because of the car thing and probably because once you get to Z3, the SUBURBS start.

suzy, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, love the suburbs. The suburbs love you...you will return one day...FEAR! ;-)

My take on the whole zone thing was that it just caused me to spend more money at times. This was frustrating but still, at least there's transit direct out to Heathrow and back.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Suburbs are evil! They are sucking my will to live!
