I often find these explanations amusing and/or somewhat poetic. Last night I noticed that "Bright Star" is rated PG for, among other things, "incidental smoking."

i always enjoy the different kinds of violence there are. i think i first noticed this with 'casino' ("strong brutal violence"). then there's 'public enemies' ("gangster violence"), etc etc

In Australia, some things are rated MA for 'Ribald coarse language', which has a nice Nineteenth-century ring to it.

ok i don't rly give a fuck about this movie, but what the hell is with the rating??

“The Extra Man” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has sexual situations and cross-dressing.

There Will Be Blood - Rated R for some violence.

I think, maybe save a dirty word or two, you could show this unaltered on network television. I think it got an R based on mood alone, which makes no sense.

x-post NYtimes regularly tosses in gag ratings explanations.

When he finally submitted it for an informal rating, John Waters likes to boast with pride that "Pink Flamingos" got "Rated NC-17 for a wide range of perversions in explicit detail."

Also, "Once" - Once!!!!!" - got slapped "Rated R for language." Rated R! I think there are one or two mumbled "fucks" in the whole film, which is otherwise almost as wholesome as movies get these days.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

"Rated R for mumbled fucks" would be a pretty good one.

Rated PG-13 for non-stop ninja action.

Scott's "Inception" review gets a winky "“Inception” is rated PG-13. The violence is stylized and sometimes bloody, but not likely to cause nightmares." "Salt" is notes is PG-13 for "fisticuffs and gunplay, accompanied by swearing."

See? NYTimes, always bringing the LOLs. Not an official MPAA rating, granted, but often the critic having a bit of fun at its expense.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

Re: a couple of mumbled fucks, that's apparently all it takes to get an R rating. One 'fuck' in a PG-13 movie (or several in a PG movie ca. 1986) is allowable, but anything beyond that crosses a line. I mean, come on: if you're exposing kids to the word, you're exposing kids to the word. It's not like a second 'fuck' is gonna make 'em knife a pensioner in the balcony.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 August 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

Usage of "fuck" matters, too. Hit your thumb with a hammer and say "fuck," PG-13. Later say "fuck you," R. Say "I'm going to fuck you up," possibly PG-13. "I'm going to fuck you," instant R.

In "Once," I doubt kids could understand a single word, anyway.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

"I'm going to fuck you," instant R.
