when i set to on kickstarting my stupid lifeproject, set aside for months, i found this cryptic note to myself: i cannot interpret it => best solution gets a footnote (maybe)

Lute/mandolin
Rod Steard/Vinnie Jones
Vinnie Reilly/formerly of Ed Banger and the Nosebleeds

mark s, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ideas for a tolkien-inspired SUPERGROUP specialising in Tom Bombadil covers?

katie, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s. having investigated slightly: I think I know exactly what your note meant. but it might be less fun than WHAT PEOPLE MIGHT COME UP WITH.

I WAS going to say that a lute is not a guitar and a mandolin is not a banjo and rod stewart is not scottish and vinnie jones is not welsh and I don't know what else.

RJG, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

its the theory of classic english arse folk music having a direct influence on the mc5 creation of punk rock (or was it one of ? and the mysterians)

lute = boring olde english instrument mandolin = often played with the lute in a combo rod stewarts mandolin song on every picture tells a story - loves a kick around with famous pals vinnie jones famous pal likes a pogo and a fight

Can I be the Princess? heheh

nathalie, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Vinnie Reilly and Morrissey were both in the Nosebleeds, at some point, before diverging musically. Rod and Jones were both hod carriers I reckon, and will be till they die. Who's publishing it?

Snotty Moore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i haf a publisher snotty, but i am not going to mention them in a googlable space in case they come looking for me and ask why i am dicking around on ilx instead of finishing the manuscript, a question to which i have no grown-up answer

mark s, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Rod Stewart has the mandolin on some of his songs...Vinnie Jones takes the loot in one of those gangster films, where he smashes the guys head in the car door and maybe gives him a nose bleed?

jel --, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So kickstarting how????

Graham, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

by getting ile to write the book for me?

mark s, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

whoomp...here it is...See what happens when you invoke the pedant? It's become complete unstuck!! Repair job = Dowland played the lute which is a kind of mandolin, which is an instrument not heard much since Rod Stewart's solo LPs: Rod the Mod loves football which is where Vinnie Jones comes in. Another musican called Vinnie is Vinnie Reilly formerly of Ed Banger and Nosebleeds, who recorded "Ain't Bin to No Music School". (Phew)

RJG, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously I have to wait for the first three books to be done before I can contribute.

Graham, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, i haf a horrible feeling that RJG just dealt me an AWFUL LESSON: viz that these aren't notes for my BOOK at all but notes for some stupid post on an ILM game-thread

oh well, same diff, eh, publishahs?!?

mark s, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So I suppose RJG deserves a little round of applause there.

Gordon, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The lute / madolin part is obv in the context of your book as one is a technological advance from the other musically (to show that technological advances had always happened and to ground your preface in saying that the period you are talking about is 'lectricty).

I would be tempted to say that Vinnie Jones is not a technological advance from Rod Stewart. I would also be tempted to think that maybe you were thinking of Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics which would then link nicely into Rod Stewart with them both recording the same song and the Stereophonics deliberately using the technological advances at their fingertips to try and sound like something of a less technologically sophisticated age. (A cover is of course a grebt way of illustrating this. Technology gives us this choice, it does not force progress - can create luddites).

Vini Reilly is notably technologically for not appearing in 24 Hour Party People apart from a brief second when we are told he will not appear and will be saved for the DVD.

I implore you not to mention Vincent Jones in your book.

the pinefox, Saturday, 12 April 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 12 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

He didn't invent hip hop. He inevented soul music, which was then ripped off by Otis, Aretha and a bunch of Johnny come latelys.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 12 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)
