It was unclear how fast Kumaritashvili was going, although many sliders have exceeded 90mph on this course. The track is considered the world's fastest and several Olympians recently questioned its safety. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training.

So I just saw the olympic torch flashing past. Everyone was waiting for it about half a mile away, with about 200 protestors and at least as many police and media. It looked like the blocked road was going to make it a no-show so I headed off because I had to go to work. 15 minutes and half a mile away from where it was supposed to be it suddenly showed up, mounted on the ex-mayor's wheelchair and surrounded by about 100 cops/volunteers etc all shouting "GET BACK", "CLEAR OUT OF THE WAY" and firing off sirens etc. So bizarre. My 4 year old daughter was like "When do we shout hooray?".

I think the consideration that Bettman was having was that if the Olympic break didn't lead to any extra interest in the NHL, then he wasn't going to stop play again in Sochi. But I would figure at the very least, Ryan Miller has much bigger name recognition than he did two weeks ago, and probably a bunch of other players do too.
― C-L, Sunday, 28 February 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)
Epic ending! Great game on both sides, could've gone either way. Sid the Kid lost control on his late-game breakaway when he could've put the game out of reach, but he rose to the moment when it mattered most. A true heir to the country's birthright. "Nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau, à vous toujours de le porter bien haut", and all that.
My toddler's opinion: "Too loud!" -- crying and unhappy while the rest of the family jumped around. "You shouldn't be so loud!!" Years from now, I'll have to bite my tongue about his reaction when I remind him we saw the golden goal together...

That was WAY too close, but the good guys won, and all is right in the world. You have to give the Yanks credit though. Nobody expected them to do very much coming into this tournament. As much as it pains me to admit it, the US has cemented its position as a hockey superpower.

Man. I was stuck on a train home from Toronto that left at 3 PM EST and while I was able to stream the women's game on the train courtesy of VIA's lovely free internet, none of us could get it to work this time around. :( The first three periods we survived on twitter updates, streaming AM radio and text messages/phone calls. Which honestly was pretty cool in a weird way - the flurry of people yelling out updates at the end of the third period as we realized that the US had tied the game was something that had to be witnessed.
And then just as overtime was starting, we pulled into the Kingston station and someone apparently got a really strong signal on their wireless card, and got the CTV live streaming to work - half of my train car was crowded around one computer watching the overtime play - and even though there was a three minute time lag, and we got SMS confirmation of victory before we saw it, we stayed perched around the screen counting down to the 12:00 mark so we could see Crosby score.
Not how I would have optimally wanted to watch the gold medal game, but it was pretty magical.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered Russian Olympic officials to quit or be fired on Monday and demanded drastic changes to training procedures after a poor showing at the Winter Games dented national pride.Once mighty Russia limped in 11th in the medals table with just three golds, its worst ever tally. The result was especially embarrassing because Russia is due to host the next Winter Olympics in 2014 at the Black Sea resort of Sochi."Those responsible should take the brave decision and sign a letter (of resignation)," Medvedev said in televised comments. "If they can't we will help them."
