Weed and alcohol- classic, dud, somewhere in the middle?

Getting high while getting drunk? Good combo or what????? I did this last night. I have no idea what happened.

Weed always made me "truly" high even when I was doing it regularly or smoking schwag. I don't know how people can't tell much of a difference granted that weak weed isn't exactly having a ball.. it's not that exciting even if I know I'm high

I am jealous of people who can smpoke weed and not get anxious every time - which is a lot of people - and I don't think lots of people quite understand how weed can potentially bring on anxiety/psychotic mental illnesses and/or make them worse.

But beer + weed is good to kill some weed anxiety... As long as you don't get super-wasted to the point all you can say is "I'm so high right now"

i like to have 3 moderately strong mixed drinks, then take a puff or two. if you know your booze and know your weed, the pairing is about as perfect as it gets.

I got too hammered last night and didn't smoke enough weed; usually the latter tempers the former.

wine + weed sends me off the edge, otherwise classic. i mostly smoke alone tho and i don't drink alone (and drink very seldom) so haven't done this in a while

I'm high and drunk. You know what sounds fucking awesome right now? That first song off that Millions Now Living (Tortoise) album. Djed or whatever the fuckkk. It's like three years long, but it's got a groooove. It's kinda beautiful.

I have this odd reaction if I start mixing weed & booze when I'm slightly tipsy, around 4 or 5 drinks in - the weed really knocks me out. This doesn't happen if I've been smoking the whole time or if I smoke when I've drunk more than 5 drinks - it's just at that point of inebriation.

Oh, I'm close to slumber no doubt. But I'm trying to enjoy it. Life's a bitch, hence my current state.

yeah it all depends in what order. if i smoke first and then start drinking i can attain my dream level of articularcy and confidence, yet the other way round and things can go horribly worng

Sometimes bright people need a dose of artificial stupidity to decompress. Under those circumstances, classic. But dosing is a delicate issue. When too much stupidity enters the system at once, you can get undesirable side effects.

smoked for the first time in a couple of years, some stuff a guy brought back from a California dispensary - unlike even fairly expensive stuff here, it gave me no cottonmouth.

If it were legal and I could afford the equivalent of the above, I'd give up liquor completely, cut down to just a few really lovely red wines and beers on occasion, and smoke instead.

It often sobers me up to smoke a bit.

These days I only ever succumb to smoking weed when I'm really drunk, and I always regret it massively. It robs me of the power of speech.

sometimes when i am h.i.p. (sweet new acronym i just invented for 'high in public') i feel like i'm a character on a tv show who just developed telepathic powers and is going through the obligatory 'hearing everything ppl are thinking in the office/school cafeteria/mall/whatever' freakout scene — every conversation is so clearly audible and so loud, like neon islands of stupidity, pushing back the dark and peaceful silence

Classic but only if you smoke first. Being drunk and then smoking can send you over the edge/trigger the spins. I know so many people who think weed made them throw up, but it's the alcohol they drank before smoking that's the real culprit. Also, smoking first, for me, tempers the drinking since I already have a buzz.

When I was in high school my friends and I were super careful to never do this, because for some reason we had it in our heads that mixing them would kill you.

People from the council came round our school and essentially told us mixing any two drugs would kill you.

I said "why can't we just enjoy both?"

but to comment on the original revive post: I don't think I've ever seen anyone replace weed with booze.
Booze also strikes me as a LOT more destructive, but to each his own.

ok so I think I have this figured out

smoking then drinking = classic, the drinks taste so much better and you naturally go pretty slow with them, plus you can smoke less knowing the alcohol's gonna amplify the effects

drinking then smoking = dud, way too easy to smoke too much too fast and the effects don't combine as well. plus if you're on the way down from alcohol the weed winds up amplifying the depressive effects and you can wind up feeling super depressed

Agree, smoke then drink is more manageable, you can temper the intake of the latter as you drift on a wave down to the shoreline. If you feel the need for that little something extra while drinking, go for a cig or small cigar instead of the skank. You’ll be in a warm cocoon at that point

Call me an aging puritan, but I've never had a pleasant experience with weed--normally I didn't feel anything; once I got antsy and paranoid. Still, I voted in DC for decriminalization and I still think that was right.

I remember reading something about how the weed-before-alcohol chemistry works. I think alcohol enhances the absorption of THC, which can lead people to over dose (not in the dangerous sense, just enough to sometimes feel sicker faster). But THC first *may* lessen the perceived effects of alcohol. That is, you *feel* less drunk. So pot first then alcohol can be kind of more of an even keeled pace, kind of like Glenn Frey's drinking strategy (“Two beers back to back, then one every hour and 15 minutes. … You’ll be loquacious, and all the girls will talk with you.”), but too much alcohol first and pot might accelerate/potentiate the effects in a bad way. But of course everyone is different, and there's the matter of what you've had to eat, how/what you're drinking/ingesting, how much, etc. With relatively limited use over the years, I find the effects of pot more or less on par with that of alcohol, with relatively few distinctions, but pot knocks my wife right out. Everyone's different.

Incidentally, we and our friends have no problem drinking around our kids, but I'm pretty sure we're all on the same page about keeping any pot use relatively private. Not sure there's any real logic to it, or how that might change now that it is totally legal here. Pot's never played a pervasive role in our social lives; our circle of friends has run the gamut from daily users to never-users, but everyone drinks.
