average dump from average gangsters (deej), Thursday, 18 February 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

I might wonder if any of the dish glazes would be harmed by bleach.

pithfork (Hurting 2), Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

i wouldnt do this

also eggs can theoretically sit around for a while, a long while, unrefrigerated.

amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

in ~france~ they dont even keep em in fridges at the supermarkets

amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

is she wearing gloves btw?

she should really not do this imo. if anything, just use hot water + nothing else.

amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, 18 February 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

yah this could totally damage dishes w/ designs.

Eggs arent refrigerated in supermarkets in Aus either. Its fine to store them room temp - they just dont stay fresh for as long, thats all.

Leaving white crockery soaking in bleach is not a bad thing to do every couple of months, but I'd always run them through the dishwasher afterwards.

Went on holiday with some dirty clothes once as my washing machine had packed up. Not knowing the local term for washing powder, I bought a packet of stuff that had a picture of dirty looking clothes going into the bowl, and shiny white ones coming out. When I came to use it I thought "hmm this stuff smells pretty strong. And it is actually making my clothes lighter. Guess I bought bleach, lol".

take me to your lemur (ledge), Thursday, 18 February 2010 09:55 (fifteen years ago)

Bleach on dishes: commercial kitchens do it all the time, tho prob more with cookware that the table service. You don't need much -- if you can smell the bleach from a step away from the sink, it's too much. Just a capful or two for a whole sink, soak ALREADY CLEAN dishes for uh 5 mins, then soak in clean hot water for 5 mins, then air dry.

I like to keep a cheap spray bottle filled with bleach-water under the kitch sink for when I prep chicken...spray the knife, (plastic) cutting board, inside of steel sink where I did the dirty work.

Esp if someone in the house has been quite sick lately, some sanitization seems like a perfectly good idea.

I can't imagine how dishes with "designs" would be harmed -- if they're food-safe, the color is all under a glaze, otherwise you couldn't eat off them, wash them, microwave them, etc. Hot water and the hot-air drying cycle in every dishwasher ever are probably 300% more damaging to dishware than 5 minutes of bleach?

Let's see how tough Aquaman is once we get him in the water. (Laurel), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

what everyone should do is soak their dishes with one of those blue things u put in the toilet tank

Eating out of dented cans: are people really afraid of dented cans? I thought the ones to watch out for were BULGING ones, because the botulism built up gases inside or something.

Let's see how tough Aquaman is once we get him in the water. (Laurel), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

unlikely but they can expose the underlying steel which will rust and contaminate your food.

I shop at the bent-can store regularly, it's pretty easy to find the barely dented stuff and stay safe.

amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

I have no idea why America does not have thick bleach.

There is nothing better for cleaning the tea stains out of mugs than a tiny bit of bleach in hot water. Some people use denture cleaner, but that is one thing I wouldn't buy unless I needed it for something else.

extra awesome blossom (suzy), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

voices from the manstep (brownie), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

getting under the rim of the toilet when cleaning.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

You used to be able to get pens with bleach GEL in them, I loved that shit. Tried to buy them again later and haven't been able to find them since, maybe were discontinued??

Let's see how tough Aquaman is once we get him in the water. (Laurel), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

thick bleach is also useful for cleaning surfaces as it is easy to squeeze just a tiny bit out of the bottle for stubbon stains.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

u used to get m&ms with bleach in them, they were so refreshing

amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'll add some corn starch to my bleach next time.

voices from the manstep (brownie), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

we have cleaners here with a bit of bleach in them, seems to work fine, and plus it doesn't kill you when you drink it

Mr. Que, Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

there's a bent-can store?

― amuse-douche (s1ocki), Thursday, February 18, 2010 9:48 AM (5 minutes ago)

Yeah, aka the "salvage grocery." They buy big lots of staple groceries that have been slightly damaged in transit, which the manufacturer isn't willing to pay return freight for. Discard the unsaleable, sell the rest.

blow it out your bad-taste hole (WmC), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

It's no big loss but it seems somewhat odd that in a market that works hard on differentiation by miniscule differences in product and branding that this isn't available over here.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

"over here" meaning Pittsburgh?

Srsly, the stuff works. Does a heck of a job cleaning the sink, too!

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 18 February 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

My mom told me that once, in high school, she had been doing some cleaning with bleach and not wearing gloves. She said for the next few days, she kept smelling dead flesh around her all the time, and it was really unsettling but she could not determine its source. It turned out it was her hands that smelled like a corpse.

RE EGGS:

In the USA, the law mandates that eggs be washed prior to sale. This washes off a protective membrane and as a result, US EGGS REQUIRE REFRIGERATION. In other countries, however, there is no egg-washing law, leaving the protective membrane, making it safe to leave eggs unrefrigerated.

at my kid's preschool we are required, by state licensing rules, to rinse all cups and dishes with a bleach solution. sounds insane I know, but it is required. but it's like, one tiny dropper to 1 gallon of water.

akm, Friday, 19 February 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I would think very dilute bleach water is actually less toxic than the shit that goes into dishwasher machines That stuff is extremely caustic.

At the public school I work at in Portland, OR we are required to rinse dishes in bleach water. In Austin, TX we used to do the same but but were required to STOP using bleach a few years back because they didn't want chemicals in classrooms.
