Quiz Night 1: Music

Someone suggested a quiz night in CJ's. As her occasional barman, and as someone with not just my music collection in a database, I am in position to randomly select (computerisation's fun) 50 questions from a couple of hundred I wrote for a Trivial Pursuit variant. First correct answer gets a point; most points wins a compilation tape (randomly compiled, obv) from me. If this is a success (i.e. a few people have a go) I can do others on books, TV, movies, comics and art.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Name three of the members of Slade.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noddy Holder, Jim Lea, Dave Hill. Thank you Reeves and Mortimer.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oo! Oo! Noddy Holder, Dave Hill, Jimmy Lea

stevie mitch, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrrr. I'm off to play darts...

stevie mitch, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn you Dom.

Ally C, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First point to Dom (Don Powell was the other).

2. Who did Captain Sensible (who I've met twice, irrelevantly) describe as "the greatest rock 'n' roll bass player in the world"?

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No penalties for wrong answers, except you can't make two guesses in a row - you have to wait for at least one other poster to guess first.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don Powell, Dave Hill, Noddy Holder

C J, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bootsy Collins?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, Dom: not Bootsy, no.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was really slow answering there. But I posted before I saw you had said Don Powell. Honest.

C J, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noddy Holder, Don Powell, Jimmy Lea

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wild guess.......... Bill Wyman?

C J, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid there are no more points for naming members of Slade. We're on Q2 now.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, CJ: not Bill Wyman. And these are randomly selected questions, in case anyone thinks there is significance in asking about rock bassists this week.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not John Entwistle, then?

C J, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed not the Ox: and anyway you weren't entitled to another guess until someone else has had a go. But since you're not right, there's no point being pedantic.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sid Vicious

Kris, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Kris: 1 point. Those were the days...

"In The Ghetto".

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously a question like this is asking for trouble, as I don't know all her recordings. I want the one she had a hit with, which wasn't In The Ghetto.

Kirsty MacCall. They were divorced when she had the fling with the speedboat driver.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Three in a row to CJ. I assure everyone that I am not feeding my bar boss the answers.

michael, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still no. I'll give it a few more minutes before launching a new question. I looked up Prince Buster, and can't find evidence of him being pro as a boxer, and it's certainly his less known career.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Eubank

OK, I'm being silly now

C J, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still nothing. I think we'll give up on this. The answer is Jamaican- born former world welterweight champ Lloyd Honeyghan.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cochrane

ddd, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm too slow and too tired ........ I am giving up and collapsing in the corner. Sorry

C J, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Neil is fastest again, and clinches his win. I'll run on to 50 anyway...

49. Which was the first NME compilation tape?

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No dan, no Rip, Rig & Panic (I have it here). It was co-produced with Rough Trade.

i meant it in the same way you did

ddd, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil: I attempted to email you (you're entitled to a randomly- selected C90 comp from me!) but the email bounced back. Can you contact me for your 'prize'?

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what happened to the 50th question?

ddd, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

See what happens when you have to leave the room? Sigh.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

May as well add a 50th, for the sake of completeness, though there's not been much effort on #49, since Neil settled the result.

neil, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5. CJ (overnight leader, but didn't really turn up for day 2)
6= ddd and David

Since this has run to 264 postings and eleven people got questions right, I'll run another sometime soon - maybe at the weekend, or whenever I have some time. I'll try a different subject area too. Thanks to everyone for playing.
