I want a Mazda 3. Had one as a rental when my car was in the body shop because some a-hole rearended me at an intersection. I got to drive it around for a week and seriously didn't want to give it back. First time I ever contemplated stealing a car, ha!

Nice willem, that's what I would've ideally bought when I got the Volvo, but I can't afford the prices of decent ones, or the upkeep of any of them.

Yeah, the upkeep... Cars over 25 years old are motor vehicle tax-free here so I figured I'd use the money I saved on taxes for keeping the car in shape. I've spend quite a bit more than that over the 15 month period I own it though. Once I'm behind the wheel it's been totally worth it though, what a sweet ride and the sound of the engine (5 cylinder turbodiesel) is unfuckwithable.

Alfa may have had some problems in the 80's that people are still joking about, but that's a long time ago.I've had a number of company cars that got progressively better (Peugeot -> Opel -> Audi A4 -> Audi A6) and then I had to buy a car of my own (no company cars where I work now) and this surprisingly not-very-expensive Alfa 147 is way up there with the Audis in the sheer joy of driving a car department.
― StanM, Thursday, 25 February 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)
nickn has the car i would really like to have (mazda 3 wagon)
my 15 year old buick park avenue finally died. well, the radiator needs to be replaced , which would techinically cost more than the car is worth (+170k miles, badly dented up front from accident last summer, deployed airbags that have been cut out, passenger side-view mirror broke off and then re-attached with clear packing tape lol, etc and on and on...) so i retired it. i'm going to buy my gf's '02 Jetta and see how far it gets me.
― king willie style (will), Thursday, 25 February 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
or is that Mazda 3 considred a hatchback?
― king willie style (will), Thursday, 25 February 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
It's a hatchback, called the Protege5. It's a just a hatchback version of the Protege, which was the earlier name for the 3 - the "5" is for 5-door, I guess. One thing I didn't realize when I bought it was that the rear seat back, which folds all the down to give a nice cargo area, can't go all the way down with the driver's seat adjusted for me (I'm 6'). The rear headrest doesn't come off, which would help. Kind of bummed that I don't have full cargo capability but not that big a deal.
I do like the way it handles, and get ~24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway on long trips.
― nickn, Thursday, 25 February 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)
I used to drive a 1992 Mazda Protege like this one. It was a hardy little car and mostly inexpensive to keep (cheap insurance and gas), until the air conditioning stopped working and I was quoted about $600 to fix it (by now that's probably as much as the car is worth). It makes me sad to think of it now just spending the seasons aging/rusting all alone in a storage unit :(

I still have a mazda demio. considering the fact i scartched it badly yet again, i think i won't pick out a new one soon. lol. i'll just keep driving this way too boring car for a few more years. that said, i still think the volvo XC60 is beyond dreamy. lol
