I'm from Iowa and Minnesota is pretty cool. When did you guys get the impression we dislike you? :)

mh, Thursday, 25 February 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Sports rivalries, mostly

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Thursday, 25 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

funny that ~literally~ all the above are true in my case

goole, Thursday, 25 February 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

There we go, I don't pay much attention to college sports and we have no real pro sports teams.

I fondly remember driving to Minneapolis once every few months during college to go to a concert or two. The selection's gotten better around here since then, though. That and driving over three hours on a whim seems less fun.

I'm from Illinois but I've lived in MN for over 25 years, more than half my life, mostly in Mpls with a short sojourn in St. Paul. Anyway MN totally rules your face. And it was here that I first heard the acronym "FIBs" -- "Fucking Illinois Bastards" -- apparently in wide use across the Midwest's non-Illinois states.

not a sock!! (ctrl-s), Thursday, 25 February 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

God, now I don't know what to vote for.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm actually sort of from Iowa, in a manner of speaking.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

And it was here that I first heard the acronym "FIBs" -- "Fucking Illinois Bastards" -- apparently in wide use across the Midwest's non-Illinois states.

I don't think I've ever heard this one.

mh, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

more of a sconny thing

goole, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

iowans couldn't give a fuck and they don't come to MN anyway

goole, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

Actually the person who told me about "FIBs" was from Michigan.

not a sock!! (ctrl-s), Friday, 26 February 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

I always heard the FIBs thing via people from Wisconsin.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 26 February 2010 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

Totally subbing "FIBs" for all the "MIBs" in the Will Smith song, in my mind.

A Memorable Fancy (Abbott), Friday, 26 February 2010 05:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, here in Madison there's an Italian beef cart called "FIBs" and the sign says it stands for "Fine Italian Beef." This is Sconnish of decades-old vintage.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 26 February 2010 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

The person who told me about FIBs came from Green Bay, WI. Her college roommate was from IL. Oh, the lolz.

WhAT thE COCK IS THIS

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

There are rivalries among various identical midwest states? And they single out Illinois, which by and large is also identical except for the greater Chicago area, which is also kind of (sadly, sometimes) not all that different?

Seriously. Take away everybody's guns. Right now. Seriously.

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 06:59 (fifteen years ago)

You fucking idiots couldn't be trusted not to shoot your own dick off if it stood up too straight. No guns for you, ever.

A B C, Friday, 26 February 2010 07:05 (fifteen years ago)

kenan the flaw in your argt is that the states aren't actually "virtually identical" like you think -- you're welcome

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Friday, 26 February 2010 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

I did like the "shoot your own dick off" insult, tho. Made it up on the (ahem) fly.

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 07:17 (fifteen years ago)

I obviously have no dog in this fight. I just came here to spread my scent.

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 07:22 (fifteen years ago)

you're welcome

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

Surely by now everyone understand that excessive pride in one's state. country, sex, species, etc is something that bad people do on weekdays, and you only do on weekends? Amirite?

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 07:34 (fifteen years ago)

what are the differences between these states? (discounting sports rivalries)

barack hussein chalayan (suzy), Sunday, 28 February 2010 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

I kinda wanted to know more now you said that and expected it to be in some remote wilderness but that waterfall is in the middle of Minneapolis, less than a mile away from an airport! LOL.

StanM, Sunday, 28 February 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

This is a huge map, but the little heart-shaped lake along the creek is near where my family have lived for over 60 years.

Most of the streams people would call 'river' in Britain are in fact narrower and smaller than Minnehaha Creek. My aunt's acre of back yard bordered the creek (it had been the location of the 'swimming hole' when she was a kid growing up two blocks away, so my uncle bought her the house) and I spent most of my summers when small with a roaming pack of kids who ranged along the creek (trying to catch crayfish, mostly unsuccessfully) all the way to the marsh and lake just to the west.

Eric, I may have you confused with Matt here, but I thought you were near Linden Hills/Upton?

barack hussein chalayan (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

northern minnesota (boundary waters) is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Monday, 1 March 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

I did used to live in the Linden Hills area in 2006 or so. I made the big leap to the other side of Mpls about three years ago.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

One of my cousins lives near Nokomis - since the light rail a lot of people have magically decided it's worth living over there.

I really like my little corner of near-Minneapolis.

barack hussein chalayan (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

Which is where again?

(Haha, you got my number on the LRT. It was the deciding factor. God knows it's not because there's a grocery store nearby.)

barack hussein chalayan (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

parts of northern MN are gorgeous. there are some kinda swanky yuppie resort towns up there, and some towns that are not frequented by vacationers with $$$ and some of those can get to be pretty depressing and low down. then there are the giant open pit mines from the iron ore mining operations..

one of my college friends from the minneapolis area was trying to explain that.. let's say the rest of the state doesn't regard the rangers (eg ppl from the iron range) as the classiest people in the world.

daria-g, Monday, 1 March 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

Places I have been in MN, even though I am Iowan and apparently know nothing of the state:

Gunflint Lake (Way up on boundary waters area, was there in 1993 when we had the crazy floods in Iowa. I think they had satellite tv in the lodge thing, but my family was in a cabin without television, and by the time we checked back via phone, everything was underwater)

Lake of the Woods: Another family vacation, probably 89/91ish? These lakes bordering Canada are cold! And there are beavers and moose.

Duluth: Hey it's cold and there's a really big lake!

St. Cloud: I was under 10 years old? Dunno, family friends moved up there. A college friend who is trying to be a conservative radio commentator got fired from a radio station there after he grilled a local rep about the health program and whether it included abortion. Obv, his politics don't match mine, and we spent a good six months of college pranking him contantly.

Minneapolis/St. Paul (mostly the former) about one million times: gone there with pretty much every ex-girlfriend at some point, have seen shows at a few venues, hung out downtown, uptown, a few other places. Got an amazing food poisoning case on the way there once and passed out on the way back when my sister was driving. Never eat in a BK next to the interstate. Of all the things I've wandered around, I kind of want to go back to the eastern part of downtown and check out the Mill City Museum, if that's what it's called. Looked neat?

<3 u minnesota

overly friendly bartender really trying to sell me on "free" karate lessons....then invites me to a white power group meeting. i pay and leave.

my friend andy gets a job there after graduating from bartending school....on his first day he's serving one of the old lifer alkies who just throws a $20 down on the bar and lets andy make change out of the pile for every drink...dude comes in, bashes the old dudes head into the bar and runs off with the money
