I did this last night, eliciting a(n attempted) withering look of derision from my flatmate, a guy who hardly comports himself with the highest of standards.

Should have probably opted for the only other available vessel, which was a ramekin dish, although that's really better for snifters in my experience.

only real downside of it in my experience is that since they're not really made for that it's easy end up sloshing it all over yourself. especially if you're already pretty drunk by the time straight-from-the-bottle seems like an appealing idea, which has generally been the case for me. but there is something liberating about it. feels very ... well i guess bacchanalian would be the word.

I don't belive I've ever felt quite as deliciously dissoulute as when I'm wearing evening wear with my tie undone and my hair ruffled and a bottle of champagne in my hand at the end of my unbent arm tottering good-naturedly amidst the jetsam, detritus and survivors of a particularly good fête at dusk with the thoroughly wholesome intention of going off to greet the dawn.

nabisco, I'll see your jug/canteen and raise you the plastic jerrican we used to get wine in at the local wine co-op in the Var, though I don't wholly recommend the technique.

I am not a wine-knowledgeable person, but this always seems way nicer with white wine than red. I don't know if that's because we like straight-from-the-bottle things to be cold, or if it actually really, REALLY matters for the red to breathe. I assume it's more just ... straight-from-the-bottle is better crisp, cold, and thinner.

I agree. Red needs to breathe. However, there's a good chance, if I am actually swigging wine right from the bottle, that I'm cleaning up after a dinner or other party (and thus avoiding dirtying more glasses) and the red has already been aerated for some time.

awesome, except better if you have a corkscrew or bottle opener on hand. A friend and I somehow happened on a bottle of wine at Yr 12 afterparty, and with nothing to open the bottle with we dug around til we found a sturdy stick and just punched the cork into the bottle. Which is great except you have tip the wine all the way up to get the cork out of the way, thus skulling the wine every time you take a hit.

that was one BAD hangover.

on the way to a festival where they do not allow glass bottles in, my friend claire once drove me into the forecourt of a petrol station where she bought a two litre bottle of lemonade, poured it down the drain and proceeded to open three bottles of wine using her stiletto heel and poured them into the now empty bottle while the ppl in the car next to us broke their arses laughing at us.

Amazing post.

I was about to say "gosh no Ive not done this" but then it occured to me that not that long ago, I decanted wine into a plastic Mount Franklin water bottle, so me and the lad could off to the park where we were taking night photos, while I swigged my classy Yalumba cask paint stripper, leaning over the fence watching the trains rumble past in the cutting in Alma Park.

based on my pretty limited drinking experience to date, this is stone cold CLASSIC when you're on the beach with a bunch of people that you don't know well but suddenly seem like really good friends cause everybody's having a good time and you're singing Lion King and Billy Joel lyrics in a circle and passing around the various $5 bottles of wine in a circle. Good times.
