Neil Patrick Harris has a TV-heavy resume. Now he's just landed the lead in Smurfs: The Movie for Sony. Harris won’t have to walk around as a blue-tinted Avatar, either. The Raja Gosnell-directed film is a mix of live action and animation, and Harris is the lead live action character. Filming begins in April, when he’ll be on hiatus from CBS' How I Met Your Mother.

Oh good god:
“We liked the idea of juxtaposing the Smurf values with the modern world,” Minghella explained. “Smurfs grow their own food and are very environmentally conscious. They don’t have technology or electricity. They do everything together and are really supportive of each other. For us, that was the starting point. Let’s bring that magic into the real world, the grounded world.”So the blue people are actually, uh, green. That catches the humans off-guard at first. “They don’t know how to react, but the Smurfs become an agent of change and bring magic into their lives,” Minghella said.

Of course:
The success of the Smurfs is truly planetary. As everyone who has worked on the series recognises, the Smurfs are successful largely because of their basic appeal. And that appeal stretches right across the board - from mini-tales to pop songs and on to the exciting world of multimedia. Smurf material is now available on video, on CD-Rom and CD-i. The video games regularly top the sales charts. Theatre productions tour Europe. Yet each adaptation offers new challenges, which must be faced without the help of Peyo who died in 1992. But how will the world of the Smurfs adapt to that of the 21st century? If the past is anything to go by, the answer must be: smurfingly!

In a world of downer arthouse directors, Raja Gosnell is perhaps one of the few true auteurs; he's proved those downers wrong by creating a niche with the marriage substantive subtexts and populist ebullience. He's not afraid to talk about things we are afraid to talk about, like Big Momma's House's scathing examination the ethics of federal law enforcement before anyone ever heard of the word "waterboarding" or Never Been Kissed's indictment of the lustlessness of the career women.
Two years ago, he changed the face of cinema with his magnum opus Beverly Hills Chihuahua--the final film in Gosnell's self-described "Anthropomorphism Trilogy," it was a stunning and life-affirming social realist investigation of the bourgeois malignancy that confirmed him as the heir to Loach.
What we have is only a teaser for this master's next work, but it is filled with stirring, meaningful imagery that is complex and mature.
"In 3D"? Dimensionality is now rhetoric--powerful rhetoric.

SMURFS 2: ELECTRIC SMURFALOO
The very first image from the sequel to The Smurfs is out. You have now acquired this information. And are these...albino Smurfs? The girl is called Vexy, and will be voiced by Christina Ricci. The boy is voiced by J.B. Smoove, and his character name is Hackus. These beings were created by Gargamel and his terrible CG-faced cat. Their official species name is The Naughties. Sure, why not.According to Entertainment Weekly they're going to cause a lot of trouble for the Smurfs in the sequel. What's happening with Gargamel these days? The villain has been stranded in the real world and got a gig as an entertainer in Paris. His big bad plan is to use the Eiffel Tower as a conductor to get himself back home, but he needs more Smurf magic first. This is inarguably a movie that is being made.

I don't have a problem with these new little smurf enemies that Gargamel is going to create. Smurf lore goes pretty deep. There are, I think, 9 series of the cartoon and each one has dozens and dozens of episodes. Shitloads of stuff happens. Gargamel has often acquired or conjured up new characters to help him battle smurfs, and they always end up joining the smurfs at the end. That's where Smurfette came from. I see this as a continuation of that tradition.

Oh wicked world.
The evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants – and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs – Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer. It's up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
