Neil Patrick Harris has a TV-heavy resume. Now he's just landed the lead in Smurfs: The Movie for Sony. Harris won’t have to walk around as a blue-tinted Avatar, either. The Raja Gosnell-directed film is a mix of live action and animation, and Harris is the lead live action character. Filming begins in April, when he’ll be on hiatus from CBS' How I Met Your Mother.

Wasn't this originally supposed to have John Lithgow as Papa Smurf? I hope that's still the case.

It would be kind of awesome if it was a shot for shot remake of Avatar with Smurfs instead of Na'vi.

okay, having read the Smurf Wars synopsis I am now hoping that that is what this movie turns into

So they were thinking about Tarantino as Brainy Smurf.

So far, the ensemble includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf and Kevin James as Hefty Smurf and Alan Cumming (who has prior experience in the wild blue yonder of cinema) as Gutsy Smurf.

I love the Smurfs but this is going to be the worst movie ever made.

based on the ad I just saw, this movie contains the line "I kissed a smurf and I liked it."

Every time I'm in Times Square I see an ad playing for the movie on one of those skyscrapers. The scene is where they're all wiggling their butts, presumably to some 2010 pop throwaway. Watching it makes me want to put my cigarette out on one of them.

The trailers for this make it look like they blew the entire budget on the CGI Smurfs and they told Hank Azaria he'd have to provide his own Gargamel costume. I mean, it looks so cheap.

I finally saw this movie yesterday, and I can safely say: NEVER WATCH THIS MOVIE. Imagine how bad you think it's going to be, and then multiply that by fifty. Little kids will love it though. :(

SMURFS 2: ELECTRIC SMURFALOO

The very first image from the sequel to The Smurfs is out. You have now acquired this information. And are these...albino Smurfs?

The girl is called Vexy, and will be voiced by Christina Ricci. The boy is voiced by J.B. Smoove, and his character name is Hackus. These beings were created by Gargamel and his terrible CG-faced cat. Their official species name is The Naughties. Sure, why not.

According to Entertainment Weekly they're going to cause a lot of trouble for the Smurfs in the sequel. What's happening with Gargamel these days? The villain has been stranded in the real world and got a gig as an entertainer in Paris. His big bad plan is to use the Eiffel Tower as a conductor to get himself back home, but he needs more Smurf magic first. This is inarguably a movie that is being made.

I feel despair knowing that I will inevitably end up having to watch this, since my daughter LOVES the first movie. It is probably the worst movie I've ever watched. Mean-spirited, dumb, ugly and nonsensical.

It's no Smurfs and the Magic Flute, is what I'm saying.

I have bought a couple of the comics, but I doubt that's going to kill her interest in the movie.

I don't have a problem with these new little smurf enemies that Gargamel is going to create. Smurf lore goes pretty deep. There are, I think, 9 series of the cartoon and each one has dozens and dozens of episodes. Shitloads of stuff happens. Gargamel has often acquired or conjured up new characters to help him battle smurfs, and they always end up joining the smurfs at the end. That's where Smurfette came from. I see this as a continuation of that tradition.

I must have completely lost my grip on pop culture because reading this thread title I couldn't figure out if this movie -- and its insane promo blitz -- came out last summer or 2011 summer.
