You can discuss how awful this is after someone confirms it.

Marlboro Lights are priced between abt £4.50 and nearly £5 in London, depending on the shop.

Ahahahahaha!!!!! SMUG non-smoker's GLEE that I can buy *2 whole extra pints* for each pack of nasty Marlboro.

it's totally true. cigarette tax went up about a buck-fifty the other day. some people are taking their harleys to PA to get cheaper cigs (new jersey's got the tax as well).

Alex in SF - The "flashy news thing on the elevator" = "Captivate". Do you attempt to avoid looking at it, as I do?

Farm Minister blames whales for world's starving millions

Farm Minister Tsutomu Takebe has blamed whales for causing millions of people to starve.

Takebe argued that the giant marine mammals ate food that could be better put to use feeding people lacking food.

"I wonder whether you know that whales consume more than three to five times the maritime resources that humans do. In terms of fish, that's 300 million to 450 million tons," Takebe told a news conference. "I also have to point out that on the earth there are 800 million human beings who are undernourished."

Takebe later denied blaming whales for global hunger, saying that he meant to point out the necessity of exploiting natural resources on a sustainable basis. (Compiled from wire reports, July 5, 2002)

As an interesting coincidence, beginning the end of August I'm going to be going back-and-forth twice a week between New York and Philadelphia. And yes, I do smoke and this NY/NJ tax hike sucks.

The Lord does work in mysterious ways, don't he now?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and it's because of the whales, right, that we can'ta fofrd to smoke.

yeah.

and the bildebergs. asbtards

Queen G of the pinched nerve in her neck, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I should start smoking again just to gloat about how I can get cigarettes for $2.12 a pack. Pall Malls are underrated.

adam, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just went down to Philly today. Listen up, fellow NY/NJ smokers, it's all true -- smokes down there are still $3/pack, can get a carton for $30. And I discovered a nice little tobacco shop on 6th and Walnut, across from the Penn Mutual Life Building (a couple blocks from City Hall and the Suburban Station), and he had the "buy 3 get 2 free" Marlboros (about $12). Grabbed me about 6 of 'em and headed back home.

Total cost, train fare (NY Penn to Suburban Station in Center City) =$30, smokes all told cost $72=$102. Price of 2 cartons in NJ and 1 1/2 cartons in NY.

adam i didn't know you were so "particular"

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They have the classy packaging too.

adam, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought every single pack of gum in Food Emporium. The checkout girl thought I was insane. I had to explain to her that I wasn't going to pay $8 for cigarettes nor was I going to trek to another city to buy smokes, so gum it is. She still thought I was nuts. She should see me now, I got mayonaisse on my head and I wrapped it in tin foil.

Ally, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've tried the gum thing. It worked reasonably well, too ... till I had to go to a meeting in North Carolina (Tobacco Central) ...

true story

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
How about getting them from yesmoke for 1.50 a pack. (Marbs)
