Thread Prejudice

What threads have you never opened because you assume they must be crap? I am guilty of this re. the ILE Bar and Music Quiz threads but for all I know they are scintillating.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm guilty about those ones too.

Also bangbus. Threads about films. I have to say I'm extremely tight fisted with birthday greetings aswell which isn't very nice of me.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yea, i didn't go on those 2 either, and now there are far 2 many responses to actually look. i'm not great with the birthday ones either. some of the films ones too. i did look at the bangbus thread though

gareth, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd just like to say i didn't mean to use the number 2 to stand in for the word 'to'. it was an error. i don't like people who use numbers instead of letters

gareth, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Agree w/ Ronan abt birthday greetings: it just feels weird to me, saying 'happy birthday' to ppl I've never met. And the ILE bar biz is all a bit too 'virtual' for me...

I also avoid threads any threads written in capitals.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of the picture threads take too long to load on this computer, so I tend to avoid them as well.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I don't bother with pictures either. And I tend not to look at film threads either as Gareth says. God we threadists have similar ideals. Or at least I'm agreeing with everything here making me a huge threadist.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For I admit entirely unjustifiable reasons, I avoid:
Music-related threads
'I need advice' threads
Threads about American geography/politics/pop culture
Techie threads
Momus threads

Archel, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really wish I could stop myself from reading Momus threads.

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i read everything :(

mark s, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I open all the threads, I can't stand to see blue letters. I'm not at all selective in the threads I respond to.

jel --, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Though, on ILM I only open about a tenth of all the threads.

And on Identity Crisis, I open threads and get transported to a different website!

jel --, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never read the B*ngb*s thread.

The ILE bar is just like a chatroom thingy as part of ILE and was a great idea of CJ's. It can be joined at any time without reading past posts. I like it for making trivial comments on things that don't seem to warrant their own thread then and there, and the feeling of social connection from work or home.

The quiz is finished so there is not much point in going there, but there will be more, as some people really liked it. Not everyone likes that kind of thing.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read anything except when the title is the name of some guy I've never heard of (cos it's usually an author or director or philosopher or interior designer that people discuss with long words that scare me)

Graham, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know Graham, when will people STOP with those pesky interior designer threads? :)

(I do exactly the same by the way.)

Archel, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really have any solid threadjudices - but picture threads do little for me. I love film threads obviously, and like the more abstract political threads, even if I'm not very good at them. I quite like Momus threads as they are the dumbed down version of the intellectual threads.

Pete, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Threads about American geography/politics/pop culture

*blinks* You mean there's other stuff?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read about 1 in 3 ILE threads. I tend to not bother with threads that have nondescript titles that could be about anything - e.g. recently: 'crazy town', 'Fucked Up', 'What to do'. (Memo to questioners: grab my attention!) Who the questioner is sometimes a factor: why I should want to read about every event and thought in anthony's life is beyond me, but i do! :)

I skipped the Bar threads for the reason gareth cited. I did click on the Music Quiz thread but all the action happened in the late evenings when I wasn't near a PC, so meh.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

threads about ile meetups, birthday ones, music quiz, sometimes threads about people i've never heard of, sports ones

Maria, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I skip picture threads esp. at home because of the download time.

I lurk loads on ILM. I read a lot of it, but hardly ever post. IL* is my skiving off work tool and as work involves music it defeats my skiving object if that makes any sense whatsoever.

I skip most sport threads and (sorry Alan) things about kittens. (Nothing wrong with football or kittens, just not for me, NOW I sound like a killjoy)

Anna, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have no idea how tempting it is to put a big picture of a kitten on this thread now.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anything to do with comics or computers or computer games.

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I just say that while I have problems thinking up anything to say on birthday threads, I do indeed open them up and read them and think pleasant thoughts about the birthday-person?

nabisco%%, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I avoid comics threads, SF threads, sports threads, and crap about computer games. I look at birthday threads but don't always post, even when I should.

It's been a while since we've had a Nick Currie thread of any kind!

suzy, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is because he has been on tour.

Like Mark S, I generally read everything, though due to my vacation break I'm only concentrating on recently answered threads from today...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, that doesn't often stop him.

suzy, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'm like most of the people here - anything about people I've never heard of, I ignore (unless I'm curious/bored). Football threads never get read by me. Some birhday ones.

Mostly though, I open threads, read the first two lines and click "Back"

jamesmichaelward, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, that doesn't often stop him.

Amazing! I will ask him about it on Saturday, hopefully.

Guru, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree about birthday threads, though i tend to put something on them as it seems impolite not to (not like it's a lot of effort, really). Also avoid London-centric threads as they are of no immediate relevance to me.

Matt, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to avoid Brit-centered celebrity threads and threads with names that don't catch my attention (e.g. fashion).

Vinnie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only read the B***B** thread.

bnw, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's anything to do with sports I'm inclined to ignore it, but if I'm bored enough I will end up looking at those too.

I'm more inclined to not look at threads if one person in particular has posted the question, because they always devolve in the same way.

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll tend to avoid threads that deal with areas I'm not visiting. Number two? Hmm, those that just are an excuse for dissing other members....

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't read this thread etc.

david h(0wie), Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, swap the Rumsfeld poetry for the two FLAN threads and mine are EXACTLY the same as N.'s!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Flan I don't get the appeal of. Ones with trollish titles like "America is full of churches" usually get ignored too.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of the top 15 threads right now, there are only 4 I haven't opened.
Sometimes I get worn out reading political/ war threads.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP threads make me sad.

Erik, Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, Erik?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Next winter I want to be ice-skating in NYC.

Now I'm in grey, cold Rotterdam, Holland.

Erik, Thursday, 3 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I skip little except ones involving meets somewhere other than London, as they make me envious and sad, and ones on sports I don't get to see - from England, I can get little out of a fantasy baseball league.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
It's probably possible to use peoples' answers to this thread to guage where would be the best threads to talk about them.
