I've been having the feeling to move somewhere new. Not that I hate where I am living now in Northampton,MA, I'm just feeling like I need a change of my surroundings.

Main qualifications: Good and plentiful job market, Cheap cost of living (ie:$600 for a 2 bedroom apartment), Supportive and friendly Underground arts scene, Good community radio station, Low Crime rate, Ability to get around w/o a car. No Big cities

Secondary: Cool summers, warm winters, little snow, good miniature golf courses, In the US unless someone knows an easy way into New Zealand :)

Any ideas??

WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS BABY. THE ALL AMERICA CITY.

If you find someplace like that, I'll be amazed. From my experience "ability to get around without a car" and "no big cities" are mutually exclusive. Also, a place where you can get a two- bedroom for $600 is likely not going to have a thriving job market, which means you'll have to commute, which goes back to needing a car.

Having said all that, look into St. Paul, MN or Austin, TX.

ARGH. Even though I couldn't put up with a two-hour commute just to save rent, ARGH.

Dan I was once a snobby Bostonian and when the rents became too much for the snobby Bostonian, he bought a house in Worcester and his mortgage is half of what the rent was in Beantown. Of course I grew up in this fantastic city so its not half bad. Try telling that to the fiance...hehehe.

I've never actually been to Portland, Oregon but everything I've heard about it makes me think it's prime habitat. Might be too big a city (although how big is it really - they only major professional sports franchise is the Blazers; New Orleans can top that).

You could a) move somewhere with an American name or b) move to Northampton, Worcester or even Cambridge in England.

I heart Austin, TX. Mind you Texas is the only US state I've visited and the only other cities I've visited there are Houston & San Antonio.
