can we think of films that have been remade after a long period (more than two decades say?) where both original and remake have a claim on being rather good?

Ok, not exactly 2 decades, but whatever, both versions rock my box.

And I originally came to post "I Hear You Knocking", which is 1955 & 1972, so still no qualify :-(

Herzog's Nosferatu maybe? the remake obv isn't revolutionary but it's more to my (modern) taste.

I came to post music on a film thread, obv.

i suppose the difficulty is in ascertaining whether said film is a remake or another interp. of the source material.
but i suppose some possible include
The FlyThe Imitation of life (never seen the first version)The Thin Red Line (ditto again)Ripley's Game/The American Friend (never seen the newer version)Twelve Monkeys (i wouldn't agree that the "remake" was good but a lot of people like it)

the front page (1931) -> his girl friday (1941) -> the front page (1974)
both remakes superior to o.g., first one owns.
after that it gets dodgy:
the man who knew too much (1934) (1954) ?
rio bravo (1959) -> el dorado (1966) -> assault on precint 13 (1976) ?
also think a lot of adaptations of shakespeare etc. are as good as distant versions but that's kinda cheating.

I thought the 1984 "Mutiny On the Bounty" remake was better than the '35 original. (More nudity)

I haven't seen the 50s version, but both Invasion of the Body Snatchers films are supposed to be good (okay, perhaps neither are earth-shattering, but still... good).
