the only thing i miss about the previous layout was being able to create a blank friends list, move it to the place where News Feed was, and see a screen telling me there were no new posts whenever i logged in

it's more fun to delete them as a friend & then see if the person gets butthurt about it & it circles back to you on the irl grapevine

i've only done this when a person uses Facebook more like Twitter. if you're going to post what you're eating, where you are, or some random horseshit several times a day, then yer gonna get hid.

When I was new to facebook, I was totally frightened to find out that there was a chat function. I was just checking facebook at work and my girlfriend's sister popped up all "Hi! So, whatcha up to?"
I was typed back "oh, not much" and then started frantically consulting faqs on how to turn that shit off.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 12 March 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)
I have a friend that has his own page and a group page based on his blog. He writes a blog post and puts it in his status. Then he puts it in the status for his group. Then he likes each, once from each account. So annoying.

― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 12 March 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)
Well, I've been friends with him irl for about 20 years and I was the best man in his wedding, he was in mine. You know, kind of hard to end that kind of friendship over this annoying habit. And, in his defense, his blog posts are for him to raise money for charity - so they are at least well-intentioned. But still completely 100% annoying as hell.

People who get delinked from the feed:
OCD players of Mafia Wars, Farmville or any other kind of stupid fluffy game.
The only pro-lifer/homeschooler/Bible quoter on my friends list is not someone I'd want to cut and none of the Republicans (mainly, one ex-neighbour girl I used to babysit) are foaming tea-partiers but it's always good to know from comparatively restrained people what the talking points are at any given time. I've only ever cut one person - old school friend who was compulsively posting both showtunes malarkey and Jewish Singles results to the point where my whole feed would be littered with little else while she was updating (she was also a Farmvillain). Would much rather read about the cheerleader turned hairdressing body-builder/soccer mom, for example.
― ned ragú (suzy), Friday, 12 March 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
You can completely block stupid fluffy games from ever appearing, anywhere. You have to do it once per game, but it makes the whole site infinitely more usable.
I let a handful of people I knew in high school add me, but they get to see my limited profile (my name and.. current city maybe?) and I usually just auto-block them from my main feed.

more or less getting to the place where i'm just going to log in as infrequently as possible
― ksh, Friday, 12 March 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)
I've got one friend whose status updates used to be open solicitations to help build his daughter's Farmville, asking for things like bricks and horseshoes and stuff. He almost got blocked, but I checked his wall and I guess he recently found a way to do that within the game so I don't have to see it.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 12 March 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, figuring out how to block Mafia Wars, Farmville, Happy Aquarium, Cafe World, whatthefuckever was a fantastic day!

lol i do manually link tumblr posts i write in facebook--i assume it annoys some ppl but i really tend to think no one would look at my tumblr posts (as opposed to having 5 ppl look at them) if i trusted them to like set up rss or use a bookmark or something.
btw i am philosophically opposed to hiding friends (though all applications should absolutely be hid)--if u can't just scan past their updates maybe u shouldn't be friends.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah but relatives and coworkers and such can be tricky. If they notice they have been de-friended, however unlikely that is, it's a cold dis.

*my LiveJournal "friends" --> my LiveJournal "friends" page
i also dislike the mafia/farmville/other Facebook game updates as well. i play the Mafia game, but i make sure that any posts therefrom don't end up on my page. some of the others in my Mafia are not so circumspect, alas.
several of my FB friends are right-wing wackos -- two are good friends from my childhood (they aren't THAT wacko, i can have civil conversations w/ them on/off Facebook re politics and the fact that we don't see eye-to-eye on such things has been one of the things that has kept our friendships interesting and strong), one was a former co-worker who turned out to be a hardcore Randroid (i didn't know this till i FB friended him and while he can be strident he doesn't really post about politics all that much). the worst one is a friend of a high-school friend that i "friended" only to build my Mafia -- i've ended up hiding her b/c being her FB friend is like FB friending Sarah Palin.

question:
i removed myself from facebook a few months ago.
in order to do some work on a friend's website (putting a "like" button on her site), i created a new account. i filled out zero profile information. however, i used my gmail account as the email address. this was NOT the email address i had used previously on facebook.
yet, facebook is suggesting that i friend loads and loads of people i know. how the fuck does it know this??
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
probably your gmail address had come up in those peoples' address books when they used 'friend finder'
― max, Monday, 8 November 2010 16:49 (fourteen years ago)
but it suggested these people instantly.
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago)
like, within 30 seconds. and i didn't do the gmail address import thing.
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
it also said - instantly - that three people had sent me friend requests (people i know). there wasn't enough time for those people to have located my new profile, but even if there had been, how would they have known it was me?
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
do those people have the gmail address you signed up with? would it be in their gmail address books?

but s1ocki it was instant. nobody used friend finder. whatever that is. maybe you don't need to "use" it, it's just always on? like a constant "live" flow between gmail contact lists and facebook i guess?
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
the simple joys of hiding people from your facebook feed
it was a pretty huge moment when i discovered you can do this. how do you disable chat though
― haute couture wolf gang frill them all (samosa gibreel), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
yes exactly...i believe you can set friend finder to automatically friend anyone whose email is in whatever address book you import
― ciderpress, Monday, 8 November 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
no but trace maybe they used friend finder in the past but the info is stored on fb's servers so when your gmail account was entered it went aha
― koyaani (s1ocki), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
friend finder doesnt give up so easy
― haute couture wolf gang frill them all (samosa gibreel), Monday, 8 November 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
those people all used 'friend finder' and let facebook look at their gmail contacts
facebook (probably) saved a record of all those contacts
when you signed up using your gmail acct, it matched up in facebooks database with certain peoples friend finder searches (within 30 seconds!)
as for the friend requests FROM them--maybe they did something like "invite tracer to join facebook" or something when they used friend finder? so that it automatically asked you to be a friend?
xp--are you sure they never ever used friend finder? under its tos facebook isnt allowed to peek at your gmail contacts unless you let it; theoretically it wouldnt be able to anyway unless you give it your password
― max, Monday, 8 November 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
how do you disable chat though
I'm not sure how you "disable" it, but I do know you can click 'Go Offline' and then no one will ever see that you are on to send a chat to you.

yeah, i guess they used friend finder once or whatever and now that gmail address is encrusted into the fabric of facebook for life. :(
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
otoh i don't think those people will know you created a facebook account with that email and rejected/ignored their friend requests unless they go manually searching facebook for that address. the auto-friend finder thing isn't going to tell them, i don't think.
