Looking at my boss without raising my eyebrows

This needs a little background. I've just started working at a tiny internet company which runs from an office in the Managing Director's flat. At the moment he hasn't found me a computer of my own, so I have to work on his girlfriend's. This means I'm sat facing him all day (although our monitors are mostly in the way).

Anyway, I was searching Google (it was work related, I was looking up obscure mailserver configuration stuff) and "accidentally" looked at my boss's girlfriend's search history. Maybe it was a bad idea:

OH MY GOD!

It's not that I have a problem -- far from it, in fact -- but now I just can't look at either of them without it popping into my head. Aaargh!

New "ask if you can join in" answers, please.

Caitlin, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bdsm?

nathalie, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

burn your eyeballs from your head.

that just popped into my head: you might want to wait for other answers first before taking ACTION.

RJG, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have admitted that I recognised what it meant ;- )

Bondage, domination and sado-masochism (i think)

Queen I never had sexual relations with that BildeberG, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cor cripes. My boss is just a member of a Womens Institute. She has no life outside work. I know this for a fact, because if I believed otherwise I would surely self-implode with THE HORRORS. BtG told me abt a f3tish club called CLUB RUB!

It is of course, urgent and key that I go.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Caitlin I was just pretending to be a prude naive little girl. hahahah

nathalie, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Gillanders, are you on drugs?

Caitlin, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like I am, now.

Matt, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that picture is not of me. neither of them are.

RJG, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I could see that. I must remember to post that photo I have of your quiff some time.

Caitlin, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't threaten me.

RJG, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bdsm scotland, eh?

Maybe you should turn up to work tomorrow in thigh length boots, a kilt and a gimp mask (though that might make it a tad difficult to drink your morning coffee)

If it were me, I just *know* I'd end up inadvertently saying things like "I'm sorry, can I get him to call you back? He's A BIT TIED UP AT THE MOMENT", then blushing madly.

seven months pass...
Revive!

So, I was at work today, and the boss asked for a hand with some coding he was doing. I'm standing over his shoulder pointing out his mistakes, when I suddenly spot that he has his mail program open in the background. And I could see all the subject lines. He's on a mailing list called "Ed*nb*rgh Swingers".

Ack! I *so* didn't want to know that.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never worked with your boss, so it's much easier for me to say this than deal with it directly... heh. But, I imagine if I were to find out stuff like this myself, I'd be kinda relieved and happy. As long as the playin' is safe, of course. More to the point, knowing that your boss has at least *some* form of relieving stress outside the office in a constructive and funky way that shows he's not repressed should give you comfort that he's at least somewhat open-minded and perhaps more "relaxed" at work. A lot of assuming there, but dear god, given the amount of bosses out there with bad issues...

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Great story, caitlin. And to think that I would have missed it had you not revived it!

I once worked at a temp job that involved me borrowing a male workmate's car to drive to the post office every day. One day I saw some v. naughty black panties sitting on the back seat. That same day I answered the phone to hear a guy breathing, "Oh, honey...Oh, baby... (etc etc)" and then suddenly he was like, "Laura?" and I was like, "(pause) no..." and he said, "OH! I'm SO Sorry, I thought you were...."
And the girl he was talking about also worked in our office and they were both married (to other people).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention - I was told the next day that I was no longer needed at the company.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin, might that not have been unwanted spam? I get loads of it, including on work group email accounts that I am sure no one would sign up for porn with, as they go to several people.

And anyway, nothing wrong with swinging, or should I go over to that lifestyles thread that was going?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it was definitely mailing-list stuff - he had a mailbox full of messages with the same prefix in the subject. He's got a pretty good anti-spam setup, too.

Him and his girlfriend are really open-minded, relaxed people; which is one of the reasons why I really like working here.

(apart from constant access to ILX, IRC etc :-)

HAHAHA oh man it's good to see dr wiley again

zemko (bob), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Being one of the network admins at my office, I find it's a good idea to sniff the passing network traffic occasionally. If you know what's normally going on, you spot problems more quickly. My boss, doesn't know that I do this, but there's no reason I shouldn't.

So, I capture a minute or so's traffic, and the first thing I notice is that most of the inbound traffic is someone on Usenet, downloading some sort of binary file. A quick look at the IP address shows that it's my boss, who is IT manager for the whole company. Being curious, I'm intrigued as to what group he's looking at. So I scroll down the capture list until I find something with headers in....

... to find that he's downloading videos from alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.fetish.latex

!!!!!

Ewww!

I work a similar job, altho I dont have to monitor the company traffic. I do have to scan client links, when they complain of slowness. Sadly we cant look at such detail, but it always makes me chortle when someone calls and says "yes its running slow, oh no no we dont have anything untoward happening on OUR network" while you're watching the protocol monitor reporting IRC, ICQ, Gnutella, AIM, MSN, SMTP flooding from their totally unsecured mailserver with no firewall, etc etc etc...

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Are any of those particularly high-volume applications, though? It's not like they're running BitTorrent or anything.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Okay I just looked up Gnutella, so it is like they're running BitTorrent. Nevermind.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

So what if he likes latex and boobies? Then again he should be downloading this at home....

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Heh. Yairs. And also, often its all these things at once. On a 256/64 satellite link. Which has latencey. And they also expect VOIP to work alongside all this. I Dont Think So.

I hate my job.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Gnutella isn't usually as high-traffic as BT, but it's still file-sharing, so it potentially could be bad.

(especially if they haven't got decently configured upload limits)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

This is the thing, these are people who dont run QoS type software, they dont even have firewalls! I cant believe in this day and age a business runs a link witout a firewall, and expects speedy everything with no hassles. OMG I CANT SEND ANY MAIL. Well dude, maybe if that 300kbps stream of RealPlayer stopped YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO.

*ahem* sorry where was I.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

So what if he likes latex and boobies?

I don't care what he *likes*, but I don't want the mental image of my boss wearing a latex catsuit. He's not the sexiest, as far as I'm concerned.

(and, also, this will put me off ever going to any sort of fetish club anywhere near here, for fear of actually seeing him wearing one)

Logged out for my own protection, Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

But isn't he *downloading* the files, which doesn't mean he *wears* latex, right?

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, OK, I guess not. But I don't want to imagine him masturbating either!

Logged out for my own protection, Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

yes,

too much kinky information is often a bad thing

wouldn't you agree?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

(i would rather imagine cute attractive people in latex outfits *ahem*)

i once worked with a bloke who was a swinger. i found through a friend who knew out and was made to swear not to tell anyone. however i really disliked him and always work on the priciple that "promises" made when drunk don't really count, especially when the secrets they're meant to safeguard are too good to keep. i told, "in the strictest confidence", the one person i knew would spread it all over the company within minutes. swinging dude resigned a day later.

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

He was downloading BDSM porn again today. Moreover, he had lots of strange marks and scratches on his forearms. I mentioned it to someone who's worked there quite a while. "Oh yes," she said, "his wife ties him up and beats him."
