I got pretty used to it being in the 110-115º F range, but now it's in the high 80s/late 90s. If it were 5-10º cooler, I would adore it, but as it stands it just feels like the weather is TEASING me. "It could be Fall, but....naw. Haha."

It's October 1, 10:53 PM and it's still 70 degrees. And tomorrow's high is forecasted to be 80. I am ANGRY and I want searing, skin-shattering cold. I have since summer began. I even wanted it in February when we had weeks of record lows.
Bring it on.

As my father always used to say, "You can always put on more layers in winter." (In summer you can only get so naked and still be miserable.)
Believe me, anyone I encounter in the dead soupy heat of summer has their lives in danger.
― Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:05 (seventeen years ago)
I'm really skinny, anemic, and have poor circulation. Winter is just 4 months of shivering for me. I live in Chicago because I hate myself, obv.
But I suppose I'm glad that some people enjoy the Time of Sad.

I'm lovin it.
― Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:21 (seventeen years ago)
But then again it isnt blindingly hot.
― Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:22 (seventeen years ago)
I complain about too hot when the snow starts to melt. Not being contrary for its own sake, but summer makes me cranky, miserable, and depressed. I stay inside next to the A/C that is cranked to the coldest setting.
Like so many people in Chicago I have radiators with a mind of their own, so even when it's 10 degrees outside, I open the windows and let the wind in.
― Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

Get rid of "depressed" and I echo your feelings. I anticipate the first snowstom of winter with much glee. And fall is my favorite.
― Capitaine Jay Vee, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 06:32 (seventeen years ago)
Fall is wonderful. Though I don't appreciate how summer is encroaching on it. But in its purest form it is delightful--cool, sometimes sunny, sometimes drizzly, and the smells are the best.
― Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

Tracer when did you move here? The last week in July / first week in August 2003 was one of the worst heatwaves ever ever experienced. Could not find a single fucking fan anywhere. I resorted to literal ice baths and sleeping on the kitchen tiles. It was hellish.

My flowers are fried.:(
I still enjoy heatwaves even tho they are becoming more frequent/worse here, if I looked at the 10-day forecast now and it was more 30° and sunny my immediate response would basically be “hurrah it’s summer” (and yet I am pleased that irl it’s gonna break & we get rain tomorrow) I am lucky enough to work in labs that have to be air conditioned but I do have to use public transport which is unbearable in the heat and my flat is an absolute sweatbox, it’s worse in here than outside. Can’t imagine how bad it is for ppl on the upper floors
― the babality of evil (wins), Tuesday, 1 July 2025 17:57 (two months ago)
The AC unit in this place where I'm cat-sitting just can't keep up, idk what else to do, I ran it constantly over the weekend and the apt barely got bearable. I know for a fact they don't have enough electrical power because you can't run any two appliances at the same time so maybe that's it, but I have been constantly slightly too hot since Friday, punctuated only by my multiple cold showers per day.

Last night was pretty awful even with the fan. Even with windows open it takes a long time for the heat to escape in my flat (double-glazing on the south-facing windows). Fantastic difference outside tho.

I don't massively care but I can think it will be hard for many, many people.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 12 July 2025 16:33 (one month ago)
^^^ at weekends I usually take a walk at 7/8 in the morning, but this weekend I'm staying indoors. Later this morning I realised that I had to run an errand I'd been putting off, but after about twenty minutes of deliberation I decided against it. I don't have the option to work from home, so usually in the middle of summer there are a few days where hardly anyone else is on the bus. There's definitely some strategic use of WfH from people - everyone piling into work on Wednesday/Thursday so they can WfH on Fridays.

I’ve been waking up at 05.30 on heatwave mornings, feeding Widget half an hour before the usual time, trying to be out for walks no later than 07.30, and getting the bulk of our exercise done before 10am. We stay inside after that until around 5pm (which may involve a siesta to make up for only sleeping five hours overnight). If I’m working, I tend to do the work early or later in the day.

Hilariously the coolers in the local Tesco have broken, so it's like going back to the early days of COVID. Today there was a choice between a handful of very expensive Charlie Bigham meals, or a Rustlers Cheeseburger, or a Rustlers Quarter Pounder, and nothing else. At least not in the chilled section. The people of Britain have temporarily spurned microwaveable cheeseburgers.
As I did my shopping I remember wondering if I could cool down by painting my whole body silver. However according to Google it wouldn't work, because paint doesn't reflect infrared very well. Also I would smell bad. Apparently there are special cooling paints designed specifically to reflect infrared, but they're surprisingly obscure and probably not great as body paint (judging by this article in the New Scientist).
You know what does reflect infrared? Plant leaves. Also, clothes. But plant leaves. It came to me that the optimal hot-weather outfit would be a giant pitcher plant, filled with water, worn with shoulder straps, like dungarees. Look at this woman with her pitcher plant. She looks so happy. If only we could all be as happy.
If there's one thing I've learned today, it's that no matter your race or skin colour, you will never be as cool in hot weather as a big leafy plant.

One of those days in the South East of England where it might not be the hottest on a thermometer, and there isn't even much direct sunlight, but the humidity is so high that once you start sweating you don't stop until you take a shower or get in front of some serious AC.

I know it's not the heat wave, just a hot day, but Paris really does not feel livable right now. Came into town an hour early for my train and ended up spending the hour slumped in a chair in the cafeteria of a mostly deserted covered market, discreetly splashing myself with water at intervals, because the train station felt like a greenhouse.

oddly salt lake city has been relatively smoke-free this year, and we haven't had very many days over 100 compared to the last few years. it is quite dry but south of us is where it's really bad. our major fire has been the monroe canyon fire in the middle of utah. wild fire behavior on that one, it's been pretty much unstoppable for just about a month. something like 15% contained at this point.
