Under the Knife

I am being admitted to hospital on Monday to have my appendix removed. I shall be in for one night, then will be discharged for two weeks R&R (followed by a week's leave, incidentally). Has anyone had this or any other operation?

MarkH, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suspect my visits to ILE will be few and far between during the two weeks...........

MarkH, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You will feel a whole lot better!!!

dave q, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had an operation once, but it's not something I could discuss in a family forum.

It hurt x 1000.

I had three nasal operations in my youth, but more relevantly my ex- wife was eventually rushed for an emergency appendectomy. I don't think it was what you would describe as fun, and I seem to remember that the place they cut had not healed properly until a couple of months later - but this may be the kind of procedure where they make much smaller incisions now, I don't know. And the fact that it was a rush job may have been more disruptive than a planned operation. Anyway, good luck.

Good luck MarkH!

(This is comepltely the wrong choice of pleasantry, isn't it?)

Graham, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you going into the JRII for this op?

They have very pleasant nurses there ...........

C J, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know: I was in the JR for six days over Easter, whilst they drained an abscess in my appendix. It's the Churchill this time! Have to arrive at 8am on Monday and, like a Gremlin, I mustn't be fed after midnight.

MarkH, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, best of luck - I'll wave as I drive down Old Road on Monday!

C J, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is it - when I come back, the deed will be done!

MarkH, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will they give it to you when they're done?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago which is sort of similar. Both in the abdomen. Both useless organs. The first thing I noticed was how much I fuckin' hurt afterward, but then there was that sweet relief of morphine rushing through my body. Don't expect to be able to get around and do very much the first few days. Weirdest thing about being in the hospital--the high amount of times I found myself having to go to the bathroom very URGENTLY and having to wait around for a nurse to help me get up. Those IVs drip so much crap into you it makes you have to pee like a racehorse!

Mandee, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark i hope yr ok

anthony, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good luck, but you'd be surprised to hear that I've not been under the knife.

Pete, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Pete what about your legendary eye operation as a child?

Emma, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No knife. Knife & eye bad idea. And it was only cosmetic (and failed - though of course I did get to see into the secrets of the universe in the process....)

Pete, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my appendix removal went very well until the healing wound got infected. i thought the swelling and hardness was just soreness and a natural reaction to the "having a bit of you removed" thing. but NO! it was a mighty build up of PUS! One night it burst open and created a terrible stink. i was 16 at the time, so waking up with a slimy duvet cover was a regular occurrence -- but the stink was a new experience. i imagine that's how zombies smell.

Anyway, I was taken back into hospital (and the duvet washed) where they cleaned me out (i could see inside myself!) and then plugged me up with strange expanding foam. the Drs said that as the would had failed to heal back together the usual way (slam the walls back together and let them sort of fuse back together) that instead the skin would have to build up from the bottom up. as it built up, they refitted me with a new foam plug as the hole changed depth.

Now I have the most visible appendix scar that I've seen. THough it could be that i see mine quite a lot, and not many others too often.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

all the best, Mark :-)

(I don't have much luck with wound healing it seems -- I have a herniated scar on my leg from another operation when i was 11.)

Alan T, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best of luck Mark. The grapes are in the post!

Ronan, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*unwraps mushy grapes & hopes that they've fermented en route*
cheers, Ronan. Yes I'M BACK! Op was successful. I'm not in much pain thanks to the powers of codeine and diclofenac, just discomfort. the scars aren't that big and there appears to be some bruising. It was the first time that I'd been under general anaesthetic. It is just so weird. The last thing I remember was a tingling sensation starting at the base of my neck and moving slowly upwards. tales of debauched nites notwithstanding, it was also the first time i'd gone to sleep in one place and woken up in a completely different place. The voices came first. It certainly wasn't helped by the fact that the two Filipino nurses were talking to each other in whatever their native tongue is!

MarkH, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Alans scars are REALLY COOL! Glad you're ok, Mark.

Sarah, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was worrying about you yesterday.

Well done!

Graham, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hurrah for markH and his acceptable scars!

mark s, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cheers everyone. Of course there is the small point of VER SHAVING (aka "assymetric pubes problem", henceforth referred to as APP). Not only that but for some bizarre reason they decided to shave a perfect rectangle, about 9cm x 5cm, about a third of the way down my thigh, ie nowhere near the wound site AT ALL. Why? Were they testing the shaver? Or just 'aving a larf???

MarkH, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did they shave of use a dipilatory cream? Cos if it was cream the rectangle would make sense.

Maybe they are going to graft your shorn pubes on to your leg.

Pete, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that is where they usually instal the sexslave portal

ten months pass...
Had my appendix removed about 20 years ago and there's still a huge scar. If there was one more horizontal line you could play a friendly game of tic-tac-toe on it. I remember grossing out my sister's withe my 'noodle' that stuck out of my stomach (a drainage tube, I think).

oops (Oops), Saturday, 31 May 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
