it's not rocket science -- just pick your favorite wes anderson film. if you wish to chose "all" or "other" (i've excluded his ads for television), just refrain from voting and explain why.

rushmore, tenenbaums, and fantastic mr fox are his best. i know nothing about hotel chevalier, but i think life aquatic and darjeeling were low points for him -- just cutesy, mannered genre exercises. voted tenenbaums even though it's way too long.

i haven't seen a lot of these actually (only seen fox, darjeeling & royals) & fox & darjeeling are in my 20 fav films of the decade -- i don't really get the fuss over royals tho tbh

probaby Fantastic Mr. Fox. Everyone loves to hate on Life Aquatic since he's basically repeating himself but it's still pretty amusing all the way through, teeming with aquatic life and whatnot. love all the ocean-themed ideas he squeezed into it (pirates, jacqes couseau, jellies, man-eating sharks); more colorful even than FMF. Anjelica Huston is better here than in RT, and Bill Murray is upstaged by Willem Dafoe.

i have soft spot for bottle rocket and will go to bat for for darjeeling ltd, but rushmore by a long, long way. probably couldn't sit through tenenbaums any more, but liked it at the time. life aquatic is just awful.

caek, Monday, 5 April 2010 10:23 (fifteen years ago)

Rushmore was the only movie where I ever rolled beer cans down the aisles in protest. A friend and I had been lured in by print and television ads promising "Best comedy of 1998!" We felt that there weren't very many jokes that lived up to the "these are O.R. scrubs" exchange in the trailer. Those who had called it the best comedy of the year must have missed The Waterboy.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 5 April 2010 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

i liked rushmore but don't care for the others. haven't seen bottle rocket. tenenbaums i couldn't stand enough to watch more than 10 min. so i vote rushmore.

i tihnk with anderson the order you see them in is key, because his steez doesn't change much. so i was only so-so on rushmore even though it's as good as anything he's done (saw it recently) but love tenenbaums, bottle rocket (saw them a few years back, have viewed repeatedly)

darjeeling ltd isn't very good (in context of the list), haven't seen the life aquatic

Rushmore's a better movie but I voted for Bottle Rocket, Owen Wilson as Dignan is classic, he never topped that character. I liked Tenenbaums at the time but seeing it more recently I'm pretty indifferent, hated or haven't seen everything since then, seems like this guy peaked and then burned out so quickly.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 15:19 (four years ago)

I've been revisiting some of his films this past week. I still like The Life Aquatic more than most folks on here, but was struck by how heavy handed the foreshadowing is. It can kind of be read as a comedic move, but then the film shifts into full on tragic mode.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 16:15 (four years ago)

Rushmore soundtrack is so good. CD was in constant rotation in my car for a long time. I think I heard it before I had seen the movie and didn't know what I was listening to, which made it all the sweeter. I love the Mothersbaugh pieces as much as the songs selected.

👌

Watched The French Dispatch, it convinced me Wes Anderson has crossed over decisively from what was previously possible to condone as "apolitical world of winking whiteness & poignant quirkiness" into a fascoid trivializing of struggle and active investment in the carceral state.

— Sophie Lewis (@reproutopia) April 30, 2022

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 1 May 2022 09:09 (three years ago)

Interesting. I felt it and GRAND BUDAPEST actually seem to be directly critiquing fascism and the police state, particularly given both films view those institutions as inherently violent from the perspective of POC characters who feel powerless and yet must continue to live.

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 03:59 (two years ago)

two months pass...

lol at the idea of any ILX poll getting 133 votes anymore.

I watched Asteroid City about a week ago and have been thinking about the similarity btw WA and David Lynch, in the ways they both investigate how people react to and survive stress and trauma. Augie's inability to tell his kids their mother has died...Richie pining for Margot and attempting suicide...emotional shutdown and blank affect all over the WA filmography. Versus Lynch's characters creating whole worlds to inhabit where they don't have to face what's been done to them or what they've done.

My wife has playfully/seriously accused me for decades of hating whimsy, so my love of WA's movies and surface stylizations never made sense to her. But seeing his and Lynch's work as two facets on the same gem helped me explain it to her in a way that got her off my back at least temporarily seemed to make sense. I have more thinking to do about this. I assume All the Major Film Critics have already made this point but I was out that day.

I've been rewatching his films and Rushmore and Tennenbaums both suffer from an excess of music cues imo. Of course he never stopped w/ the needledrops but he grew more skilled at integrating them into the feel of the film, making them enhance scenes instead of distracting from them.

I'll admit "oh yeah what's THAT song again" is not a reaction everyone will have and so this failing won't register for many but...I am on ILX, guessing everyone here does do that.
