Remember that Freud had it the wrong way around. The default gender, biologically, is actually female. Males are the weird mutant freaks, chromosomally speaking, with their broken Y chromosome. Foetuses are female until hormones trigger them to mutate and become male. (This also explains why men have nipples.) If anything, a penis is an overgrown malformed clitoris.
Anyway, I thought this thread was about fucking.
― Delia & Daphne & Celeste (Masonic Boom), Sunday, April 4, 2010 4:18 AM (12 hours ago)
Kate, that is some kinda pile of bullshit you just shoveled up there. Y chromosomes are not broken, they are one half of what is necessary in the population for sexual reproduction. Unless you think that genetic diversity is bad, your anti-Y-chromosome stance is just plain silly.
Men have nipples as a vestige of fetal life, it's true. But that's the same argument used against women's clitorises. To say that they have no function is to deny many millions a place to put their binder clips.

You know what? You're just biologically wrong. And that's it. End of thread.

Let's go ahead and have this debate. Everybody cite their sources for believing what they believe. There's no good reason to silence debate, especially on a board called I Love Too Much Information.

you know what annoys me the most about the 1st thread getting locked and the subsequent complaining on IMP? it totally overshadowed lols re: binder clips. A+ kenan.

there is no default gender
― harbl, Sunday, 4 April 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)
I've been doing some cursory internetting today, very cursory, and am not finding anything about a default gender either.

ovaries and testes both derive from the gonadal ridge, which itself cannot be described as definitively "male" or "female" since it fully resembles neither sex organ. male fetuses are never female - their sexless gonadal ridges mutate into testes, just as female fetuses' sexless gonadal ridges mutate into ovaries

Point of discussion: Is implying that men are merely females that were damaged in shipment sexist? also why didn't the warranty cover it....

Everybody cite their sources for believing what they believe.
That's a tall order, but not because my position is hard to defend. The question is how far back to go.
After consideration, I decided on this article.

So, I go sit out on the back deck to eat dinner with the family, and then plant some blueberry bushes, and come in to this clusterfuck. I don't care! It's a beautiful sunny day and nobody's hate-fu is strong enough.

Maureen Dowd, July 10 2003
The New York Times reported: "Although most men are unaware of the peril, the Y chromosome has been shedding genes furiously over the course of evolutionary time, and it is now a fraction of the size of its partner, the X chromosome... The decay of the Y stems from the fact that it is forbidden to enjoy the principal advantage of sex, which is, of course, for each member of a pair of chromosomes to swap matching pieces of DNA with its partner."The report said biologists in the US had made a remarkable discovery: "Denied the benefits of recombining with the X, the Y recombines with itself."The ultimate guys' night out. Simply put, the Y chromosome figured out a Herculean way to save itself from extinction by making an incredibly difficult hairpin turn and swapping molecular material with itself.Self-love as a survival mechanism: the unflinching narcissism of men may send women into despair at times, but it has saved their sex for the next 5 million years

Actually, I think it would be cool if human gender (in the common biological usage, not the structuralist) was selected as in aligators, turtles, and some other reptiles, purely by the temperature at which the egg incubates in its second and third week.

I've been reading a Daniel Dennett book on Natural Selection off and on lately and was actually wondering about this the other day and looked it up. This was from multiple sources and I forget where but what I gleaned was that sex is determined right at conception based on what chromosomes are inherited by the sperm gamete (the egg is homogametic). There's no mutation involved afaict, it's just that though sex is determined from the get go, physical traits don't begin to develop until some weeks in.
Correct me if I have slaughtered this info.
― SUPER USA (╓abies), Monday, 5 April 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)
Oh and BTW, men do have nipples because females do, though it seems for different reasons than in the OP.
(Noooot sure why I capitalized 'natural selection' above.)
― SUPER USA (╓abies), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)
Umm insert a comma and the word 'determined' between 'inherited' and 'by the sperm'.
I...forget now what I'd actually come back to post.
