Lets talk about chart pop!

So, what singles do you like at the mo?

Any new releases you particularly like?

Hmmm, I like the new Britney, Shakira, Dr Evil and Mini-Me and Christina Milian...and Michelle Branch and her very Dawson-esque angst-lite songs.

Can someone explain the concept behind the video for "Foolish" by Ashanti?

jel --, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the new Gareth Gates song! I heard it, didn't know it was by him and thought "Blimey I take it back, this new A1-write-their-own songs lark might pay off after all" because it had the same kind of sweet earnestness I heard in "Caught in the Middle", so I thought it was them.

Tom, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah! "stupid mistake" is ace, it's on the Box all the time. I have yet to see GarethCam, it comes on at 6 and 8pm and shows a minute in the life of GG.

jel --, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Christina Milian thing would be fantastic if it wasn't for the lyrics......why.......WHY must we be subjected to this kind of iffy moralising crap? Does anyone actually want to hear don't judge a book by its cover in a pop song? It's sickening cos the production is really wicked like in her last tune.

Ronan, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any new releases you particularly like?

You have inadvertantly stumbled across a severe source of artistic angst I have, Jel, which I will make into a FT article yet (assumed Tom gets the passwording back ;-)). Summation, as I've muttered to other folks via IM and private mail: 2002 has been a miserable year for me in terms of enjoying new music, whether massively commercial and successful or new stuff surfacing quietly. Next to nothing has connected or caught my interest, and what has barely lasts a couple of listens if that. I know this is my own burnout rather than being 'the problem with music these days' -- I would *never* say that phrase seriously, and besides, it is all subjective, after all. ;-) But my heavens, I've never so rarely felt like wanting to say "Fuck it" and ignore everything.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Tim Deluxe "It Just Won't Do" go top ten yet? Or is it out yet? I like it, it is dance music though.

Ronan, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Ned, I'm sorry to hear that -- I've gone through periods like that and they're pretty grim. For me, 2002 has been pretty good so far, *except* for chart pop, pretty much. I haven't bought Smash Hits for months, for example. The main factor for me (apart from the sad demise of Steps) has probably been Radio 1, which seems to have become dominated by turgid rock (Coldplay etc.), repetitive trance/house and nu-metal (certainly more fun than the former 2), relegating interesting pop to its urban ghetto. This may only be perception, but I haven't been enjoying pop radio as much as I have done for the last two summers.

alext, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's in the chart or 'designed' to get in the charts: it is pop for the purposes of this thread.

jel --, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, what the fuck are you doing even percieving what the hell a pop record might be about, let alone judging it.

I really like that It Just Won't Do song likkity split, though the acoustic performance at Glastonbury was better than what they play on the radio. Plus there's a stupid pop-dance record that I randomly decided I liked, but I don't remember what it was.

Anyone heard the new Sugababes yet, Round-Round?

Graham, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are the charts a reflection of our buying behavior? Or what we WILL be buying?

Adorno, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Perdonno" by Tiziano Ferro has won me round through repeated exposure. I assume, however, that this won't even get a sniff at the anglophone charts.

Jeff W, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Ned, I'm sorry to hear that -- I've gone through periods like that and they're pretty grim.

I fully agree. I was pondering the whole situation more on the way into work -- more extended talk in Said Planned Article -- and I just felt like there was little reason to care. One of the odder things about the situation is the the cult of the shock of the new, especially in terms of r'n'b/hip-hop, now almost feels like its own cliche to me. I'm hardly advocating a return to the past or the like, mind you! But it's more a feeling that all that has been praised recently in terms of finding new ways around rhythms, production, etc. feels to me like an endless series of sidesteps -- potentially fascinating still, but I am not getting the sense of barriers truly being pushed. In that respect, it almost seems to be suffering from the same problem that IDM has been seen to suffer from for a while by some, namely apparent innovation within a restrictive framework (though I'm sure plenty of good people here will be able to argue very cogently against that! I merely speak for what's happening in my head as I ponder what's out there).

As such, the latest Timbaland/Neptunes/whatever productions haven't found any resonance in my heart, while my disaffection for the likes of, say, Andrew WK and No Doubt was already clear. I really like the fact that for lots of people way younger than myself this is their time and this music will be their roots the same way that early eighties pop was for me, and I'm very taken by the fact that many folks can and have spoken passionately about their love for what is happening now, which extensively or in brief. That to me is an eternal, corrective proof against assuming what my own thoughts are equals what everyone else should be thinking. But I will reserve the right to say that whether it's Tweet or the Hives or whatever, I am completely, utterly flummoxed with music 2002, that I want an indefinable more and I am not getting it. I just can't sense it right now, and I desperately want some of that feeling back, in an unforced way.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adorno: Both! Charts reflect what people buy, what multi-nationals want people to buy. It's a battle of self determination vs. the (not so) invisible hand of the market.

Ned, sorry to hear that, I sorta feel the same way. Too much lateral movement, disguised as the 'new'. Though, is anything really ever new once you've heard alot of music? A question for ILM would be to ask when people were last struck by the 'absolute' newness of a song or sound...it would seem safe to assume that the more music you hear the less likely this is to happen?

The pop I like is familiar, predictable and 'pleasent', before anyone questions my posting of this thread!

jel --, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A question for ILM would be to ask when people were last struck by the 'absolute' newness of a song or sound

Tom asked this very question in February! I always meant to post a proper answer - *sigh*

Jeff W, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Would Die For You" is the dance record I meant.

Graham, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry as well, Ned. It's a truly obnoxious phase to go through. I solved mine a year back by just ignoring music for a while and focusing on other things, but it's annoying to claim to yourself you still love music when nothing seems appealing. The love will return eventually.

Vinnie, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is, the love for music itself hasn't died per se, though in many ways I find it extremely limited...like all this week all I've wanted to do is listen to obscure Echo and the Bunnymen B-sides for the most part. ;-) Perhaps the musical appetite equivalent of comfort food, I'm not sure...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I left out a key word. Even in my phase, I still enjoyed familiar, comfortable stuff. But essentially nothing new (not just music made in 2001, but any music I hadn't heard) was really appealing to me.

Vinnie, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, I've been listening to "I Would Die 4 U" all day - it's fabulous, a handy reminder of a) how good Prince is and b) how good trashy pop-house is.

Also is "House Of Jealous Lovers" at all contemporary? Because that is absolutely great. And isn't the Wildbunch getting a release on XL next month? Rapture + Wildbunch = A NEW GENRE (well OK an old genre, disco-rock, but revived) and one I much approve of.

Tom, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh the Nelly single is brilliant too but you know that.

Tom, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boys by Britney Spears is like an even better version of I'm A Slave 4 U. "Our own little nasty world"

Graham, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

House of Jealous Lovers - is excellent, but several months old now - it's is post punk for the 21st century.

Infact The Rapture have a new single Olio due on Output on the 15th, with a vocal style that is just like heaven..ahem i mean..Robert Smith.

Try keep'n'keep up Tom, now your in London there should be excuses !

DJ Martian, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rewind selecta ..there should be no excuses !

DJ Martian, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Being in London IS the excuse!

Tom, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Christina Milian! The first pre-packaged Disney pop star I really like. Of course, I've only ever heard AM to PM but my God that's a great song. I'd heard it a couple days ago, but didn't know the artist and all I could remember was "Somebody hit the lights", so people were suggesting it was Nelly Furtado, but I knew it wasn't; it's so much better! I wonder if I can find a single of it...

Dan I., Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Can someone explain the concept behind the video for "Foolish" by Ashanti?"

yes seriously, can anyone?

, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's goodfellas!

spider, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the new mini-Alanis girl. Although I can't help but wondering if her skater bandmate pals are actually friends of hers or just some boy models she met at the video shoot.

bnw, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Space Cowboy-I Would Die 4 U=Norman Cook/Johnny Moy's wettest dreams! It's cheesey as hell, can I get away with it, oh why not, here goes!

I love it aswell of course.

Ronan, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, what the fuck are you doing even percieving what the hell a pop record might be about, let alone judging it

Sorry in future I'll call Dr. Fox in ok?

By the way if you're still not determined to have an argument with me about something or other could you tell me more about the acoustic performance of the Tim Deluxe song? Was it the version Fatboy Slim played or are we talking someone with a guitar etc in which case I reckon it must have been a cover.

Ronan, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

having watched totp for the first time in ages last nite (usually in pub at 7.30 on a friday) and there being no pop-eye for a while i have a few questions:

1. what did the record company do to stop space cowboy getting in the chart?
2. who the fuck is the calling? is it the theme from something?
3. is that a boy or a girl? it's all noise, not like in my day etc etc etc...

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Abs from 5ive has a new single, he's trying to be some playa dude!

I think maybe space cowboy got disqualified coz of formats? Or maybe they had 4 tracks on their single?

jel --, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon it must have been a cover

Or, like, the woman who sings it.

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But it only has one track. And I don't think you can get disqualified for having too many formats, they'll just only count 3 of them. So unless there's a crisp non-sequential wad of used notes in each one, I'm v. confused.

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I CAN'T STAND THIS ETERNAL INSECURITY, WHY DO YOU HATE ME GRAHAM?

Ronan, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh all sorts of reasons. You started it by completely fucking ignoring me, and your whole attitude bugs the shit out of me.

(I've never been nasty to any ILE people so I figure I can have my turn now)

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well to be honest I was in the pub for about 20 minutes, I hadn't actually met you before, or Magnus, or talked to Marcello. So arrogant as you might think I am, I was actually quite shy. Bear in mind that the others who were there at the time, I've also met perhaps 3 times aswell. So I'm sorry if your feelings were hurt but it was nothing personal, I did ask if you wanted a drink, and I left the pub after about 15 minutes to go and meet Chris and Jonnie. I think anyone else who was there will confirm that I said about 3 words for the duration of my stay. And that's because I was shy, so I'm very sorry if you were offended.

If my general attitude pisses you off then that's fine, you're entitled to think that but can't you just be civil? It's interesting that it's me you seem to dislike when I can think of about 3 other people who've directly insulted you on loads of occasions but whatever, you've obviously been anxious for this conversation to take place for about 2 weeks now anyway so I hope you're happy now. I still don't really have any problem with you but I guess if you keep trying your utmost to be snarky I might eventually find some huh?

Ronan, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i've looked on the radio 1 and nme sites and there are no stories about the space cowboy single, bah, so-called interweb journalism. space cowboy as first non charting act to be on the pops since bis anyone?

oh, and put your handbags down boys, it's not pretty ;)

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unauthorished cover version?

jel --, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The answer to the space cowboy saga!

here is the reason mr carsmile!!!!

jel --, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there's been a few other disqualified singles on TOTP, though I can't think of any right now.

Bis got to number 25 the week after their Top of the Pops appearance. Lots of bands have gone on with new records before, though I doubt many other completely new acts have (Bis were unsigned at the time).

Space Cowboy info here, Carsmile - apparently it did have four tracks on the CD, though record and tape sales got it to #55.

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They had Sam Obernik, the women who sings on the Tim Deluxe record doing an acoustic performance for the BBC. It's not that complicated.

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Say something sensible Ronan and I might reply)

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(that was a reply to jel but he's talking about the other thing, sorry)

Graham, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, I've been listening to "I Would Die 4 U" all day
Good grief, are you masochistic? Oh hold let's do that annoying post-IM-chat-on-ILE:

dtcdthingy (19:04:05 PM): I heard it on the radio and then randomly decided in the pub later that I might like it

unheard musick (19:04:30 PM): I wanted to do a Linda Blair thing: spin my head around and spew vomit around the room.

dtcdthingy (19:04:44 PM): rockist

unheard musick (19:04:56 PM): heh Au contraire!

nathalie, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean I did consider the possibility of Sam Obernik performing solo, it was all you had to say! I would have preferred it in a nicer way but that's your prerogative I guess. I don't want to continue this snide comment volleyball anyway, I'd rather just sort the whole thing, that seems sensible to me.

Ronan, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dtcdthingy: That Thalia thing isn't all that
dtcdthingy: Hi jel!
Unheard Musick: that "i would die for you" is all that: shit
zaibatsu nojento: THE THALIA SINGLE IS ALL THAT AND MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chupa-Cabras, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like 'I would die 4 U' and that tacky trance version of Taylor Dane's 'Tell it to my heart'... but mostly because they remind of the originals. I like that mental version of 'Logical Song' by Scooter because it destroys my memory of the original. I thought that last Atomic Kitten song with the steel guitar was the best thing they've ever done. The most recent kylie single was pretty good (and the video was great).

The Ghastly Fop, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Love At First Sight" ?!!

The video is dreadful, she is looking like a fucking pinta. But the remix they used on it is GRATE

Chupa-Cabras, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i was wondering about the graham hatin ronan thing too. but graham has a pop at robin sometimes too! maybe its a r**** type thing?

chart pop?

my Abs thread

my S Club Juniors thread...

gareth, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth,

Graham doesn't like me because I'd rather like to live in Rye!!!

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A1's "Caught In The Middle" only came out quite recently here and I do rather like it (though not nearly as much as "If You Come Back") - has that same perfectly packaged yearning quality that Ultra's "Say It Once" had (like a little pop chocolate with yearning cream in the middle). They need some non- mingers in their line-up though.

Claire and H's "DJ" is a slight return of "Don't Stop Moving", but I like the way it paints itself as the history of disco in three minutes.

Shakedown's "At Night" is of course utterly awesome and I can't believe I haven't written about it properly yet.

P. Diddy's "I Need A Girl" is great in both its remixed and "For Bella" versions - glittering space-age pop or fluttery flute frolics, either way you can't go wrong.

Tim, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard "I Need A Girl" (I dunno which version, I'm thinking the "For Bella" one) in its perfect context: I was lounging on the balcony (can you lounge on a balcony?) of my friend's ultra-bling holiday home, staring at the ocean and then this tune breezes by. Probably my "summer pop" moment of the year, tho it was actually just an unusually warm winter's afternoon.

I like Noreaga's "Nothing" too, it seems the Neps are fairly adept at this bolly-hop stuff too. (and the 'la la la's remind of "Since I Left You" at its Love Boat-iest)(oh and it namechecks Goya, that's kinda neat)(unless this Goya is like a brand of alchol or something and not the spanish painter)(not that there's anything wrong with namechecking alchohol brands)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanessa Carlton's "Thousand Miles" is really great - all earnest female singer-songwriter piano-pop songs should be constructed via committee over take-out chinese (as I assume this one was). Every catch in the voice is so perfectly planned!

Tim, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

after seeing the videos, i am now *totally* enjoying this string of murder inc/ashanti/ja-rule singles... "happy" and "down for you" sound so well-matched for vacation weather and i even like ja rule's contributions. also, i like the new pdiddy/ginuwine/etc. single, which is good because they were playing it constantly constantly at home. the best part of the video is at the beginning and both of them are bent over doing this weird chicken-walk dance.

dave k, Saturday, 13 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This Graham vs. Ronan FITE thing is the funniest thing ever.

N., Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanx Nick i hadnt really read taht FITE! thing before, its funny as hell (i was too busy talking bout Thalia)

vic, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad you're amused Nick, now we just need to post some threads about an acne problem and beer and the cycle of inevitability is complete.

Ronan, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HEIN?

Graham, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

only 2 teenagers on ile arguing, it's like grange hill or something it's so predictable

Ronan, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yr only stroking the fire N.

david h(0wie), Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

go figure that when i start really embracing chart pop, everyone else gets sick of it. over at a friends house we were watching the spate of digital cable MTV subsidiaries (MTV Jams, MTV Espanol, MTV 2) plus the usual MTV and BET, and i was shocked to find that there were a ton of fun new singles. that 'foolish' - ashanti video IS great, btw. also the new N.O.R.E. thing (with the excellent vintage Expos jacket which has me TRANSFIXED). and i don't know if i'd buy the strokes or the hives records, but if the major media conglomerates have to push something in your direction, i'd just as soon take them over, say, 'holla back' which is the worst song of the last few months (except for that extremely excellent breakdown section in the video). last thought - 'hot in herre' = bad rhyming, but grebt beat. what can a boy do?

Dave M., Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what can a boy do?

Take off all his clothes?

My brother also loves "I Would Die 4 U" and to my surprise Isabel does too. I bought Purple Rain again on Friday just so I could hear the original again (also very good of course but Space Cowboy's version is just...vaster.)

Tom, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
I really the song by Milky, coz she sings with an accent, there's not enough of this in pop. And I like the horn's in the Shakira song.

Worst song I heard this weekend was "it's only porn mum" by Trucks, imagine a Norweign Wheatus, but just not as good. Oh, and Blazing Squad, the So Solid Jrs with their cover of Bones Thug's 'n' Harmony's "Crossroads".
