i hate work. i've often wondered what it would be like to have a huge inheritance or something and never have to. anyone here in a situation like that? or know anyome like that? would you just become a lazy, drug-addicted fuck up? i don't mean just unemployed or on disability benefits btw, i mean having plenty of cash to live off forever.

2slick, you are a suave mother****er, you ball out all over the world, you got the money, you got the balla pads, you got the cars, you got the girls, yet you still manage to donate your time and money to many great charities. and on the rare occasion that you have a few minutes to surf the web, you like to troll NVG. I can only hope to one day be 1/10th the man you are. Keep doing your thing, boss!

I'd just travel until i got bored with seeing all the amazing places on earth.

I'd travel and then think of elaborate pranks to play on my friends around the world.

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

I would build a room that was lined on the inside with custom hi-bounce rubber, on all the walls, floor and ceiling. Then I'd make little kids pay me cash money to bounce around in that room, use the profits to build more rubber rooms, and keep expanding.

I would probably start the bookshop/art gallery/etc. of my dreams just to have something to be involved in without running it day to day. Or make cheap documentaries on the fly. Something. I'm directionless enough as it is.

it would be time consuming for the person I would underpay to do all the work. And if person complained about being underpaid, I'd just say "It takes money to make money...you should get a trust fund"

Work keeps the days going - without it I'd be bored. That said, if I came upon an inheritance, I might open and work for a nonprofit organization in the arts community. something that still filled M-F.

I'd also buy the Buffalo Bills and move them to Mexico

As someone who stumbled into this situation (moderate inheritance->insight->more significant sums->grad school->mistakes->loss->revenge focus->scholastic indifference->further informed insight->saving every penny->the wealthiest person on my street or in my family). I'd say: inherited wealth might be okay if you are socially well-adjusted.

I wasn't, and still am not. I live and work for the beneficiaries in my will. Organizations like Planned Parenthood International and the Nature Conservancy.

There's no question that comfortable living standards are a base for happiness worldwide. OTOH, if you for whatever reason you don't have a social focus to your life wealth can become an obstacle to social connection.

If I was rich enough I would get everything I need to write a screenplay, graphic novel, comic strip, play or tv series. Or start making music of some sort. I'm undecided on what creative project I would do first. Maybe I'd design elaborate theme park rides or a putt putt course.

I would need to hire people to train me, help me focus, and do my bidding. Otherwise I wouldn't accomplish anything.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

i have a friend like this. she's very happy. the word *should* insofar as it relates to the idea of what life *should* be like takes on a whole new meaning in the context of her life. i don't mind this at all. if anything i'm just jealous.

if i didn't have to earn money to live, i would write music all day long, and be the best homemaker in the world. i would also work in support of causes that i care about.

people here talking about dream lives if they had the $$$. but do these dream lives ever pan out in reality? when you can actually do anything you want, do you just shrug and go "meh.. think i'll just smoke weed and play nintendo instead" because there's a loads of things i could do even without any money that would make my life better, but i hardly ever get around to them.

max arrrrrgh, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I've had months where I didn't have to do anything and while I told myself I'd work out and do creative projects and read Don Quixote, I never got anywhere with those plans. I did have mad success at smoking weed & playing Nintendo, though.

Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

i strongly believe that my dream life would pan out, and that i would not smoke weed and just watch TV. it would be very sad for me if all i wanted to do is veg in my free time.

2 guys 1 gag (surm), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

i think the key would be to put yourself on a schedule

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

I think part of why I just did nothing is I knew it would be the last chance I'd have in a long time to just do nothing, though. I love doing nothing.

Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

When I was last unemployed I did absolutely none of the things (mostly things which didn't require money: creative projects, teaching myself new things, or just reading some of my unread books) that I am now bummed about not having the time to do, so I guess this is not actually paradise, but it sure sounds pretty good to me.

(Being rich enough to work only 2 days a week would be a pretty awesome compromise, I reckon. Think I might actually wind up getting more work done in 2 days of knowing I can stop caring about it for the rest of the week than in 5 days of stress + tiredness + feeling shitty about not getting things done + hating all my officemates so much that I can't think, etc.)

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

i think i would be more productive wrt making music, but when i do have a day off i'm amazed how much faster the day slips away compared to being at work.

btw i have plenty of friends living this life without a ton of $$$. they either do freelance work for a few hours a week and live very cheaply, or have an MFA fellowship to write a novel, etc. i'm insanely jealous of their free time and ability to meet for happy hour @ 4 pm.

I would love to have tons of money & not work, and I kind of don't understand anyone who wouldn't. Like I took this sci-fi class and we were talking about Iain M. Banks' "Culture," this crazy post-scarcity Utopia where people lived a super long time, did whatever they wanted, could change gender at will, etc. And over half the class said they would NOT want to live in such a society. Are we such a land of Calvinists?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^YES!

If I never had to work (after a good amount of time of having to) I doubt I'd ever fail to appreciate that tremendous load on my psyche being lifted. I tend not to be a worryer in general, but there's always that lingering "oh fuck, what would I do if I lost my job and couldn't find a good one??? eep!" freakout in the back of my mind. Sometimes not even in the back.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

My cousin is a bit like this, but the only reason it happened to her is that both parents died by the time she was 22, leaving her with $$$$, two houses and some land in Costa Rica. Then her grandmother and great-aunt died, cue more $$$$, another house and condominium, and a humongous stock portfolio (these were mean old ladies who did little else but play with shares). In 1999 she listened to advice from our uncle, and sold off the entirety of one company's shares: Enron. $$$$GAZILLIONS. All this is whacked away at arm's length and she lives off the interest and the proceeds from selling most of the houses.

LOLirony: for most of her adult life my cousin has worked for non-profits (she's gone back to college, she curtailed that when Parent One died). Her husband has to have a job. She donates to reproductive rights and arts charities (nothing major, just lots of small donations everywhere). There's still a Paul Wellstone poster on her front porch and she drives around with a Darwinfish on her bumper. Both of her parents were involved in wildlife conservation, so she's into that too and had a kiln/pottery studio extension added onto her garage. Now she wants to buy a hobby farm in Wisconsin. Sigh.

i definitely would love to be able to work just part-time: you'd still get that luxurious feeling upon waking on your days off, thinking you have to get up and realising you don't BUT you'd also work little enough to not give a fuck about your job.

Yeah, I was the same way last year when I was laid off for about 5 months. I didn't do much. For me, I never wanted to do anything due to the anxiety of not having a job - and even worse - not knowing when/if I'll find one before the money runs out. That shit just drains your desire to do ANYTHING ELSE other than trying to find employment.

That being said, I think not working because you've got an assload of money would be different.

I spend way too much timing thinking about this. I don't hate work, I hate having to have a job that I get bored at. Assuming tons of money, I'd have so many things I'd spend my time learning how to do, just to know how they work because I love doing this and modern life isn't really geared towards normal boring adults doing this kind of thing.

I'd love to learn to build bike frames, get into woodworking, learn how to weld, learn more about printmaking, blacksmithing, learn how to fix cars, build furniture, and so on - I'd be constantly taking three month courses on things and spending the rest of a year working on that stuff or traveling.

Out of the last twenty years, the longest I've gone without a job is three months and I'd drop that habit immediately if I had the means.
