i think they are cool but somebody once said they were pickaninnies ?

anthony, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A few years ago I watched that movie while I was hallucinating. There were Oompa Loompas in my fridge, so I taped the fridge shut.

Mascara, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey we were just talking about them before i came in here & got on the computer, oo-ee-oo, spooky! maryann axed me what that chant that was sampled in that MC Hammer song was & I told her & went yeah remember it's in "I'm the Kind of Guy" by LL too, also it sounds like it's at the beginning of "Cannonball" by the Breeders but I dunno, maybe that's just something that sounds a bit like it, does anyone know?

duane, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyway what do you mean they're "pickaninnies"?

duane, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He thought it was a movie where a small exotic african tribe was captured and made to work in the factory. They sang and danced and had wiry hair. It truly is a sinister book/movie

anthony, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pygmies?

duane, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well that was the connection he made. Oompa Loompas were however all the things i mentioned.

anthony, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never thought of it like that, though it makes sense. Especially since I've read that Roald Dahl was such a nasty piece of work, so I guess racism wouldn't be out of character for him.

But the really nasty part of the film was Gene Wilder -- he played Willy Wonka as an evil-childhating-recluse to the hilt.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maryann told me "The book's better". I went "(don't know, haven't read but) Roald Dahl is s'posed to've been a real creep", she's like "How?", I say "Don't know, but you hear that everywhere". So, can anyone back that up w/ s.th. solid?

scott, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmm chcolate.

Geoff, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the book, they are large black people from the depths of Africa, complete with all the stereotypes that come along with. In the movie, they are odd little dwarves

JM, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're definitely pygmies in the book. If memory serves (which admittedly it often doesn't), Willy Wonka says he took a trip to Africa and found the little chaps living in poverty so he offered them all jobs in his factory. They accepted his offer, he imported them.

The film of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory makes me cross, mostly because Gene Wilder is a *dreadful* Wonka.

Madchen, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But the really nasty part of the film was Gene Wilder -- he played Willy Wonka as an evil-childhating-recluse to the hilt.

I wouldn't say Wilder's Willy Wonka (try saying that three times quickly) was child-hating, he does, after all, give the factory to Charlie specifically because a grown up wouldn't be able to run the factory the way it should be run. He doesn't hate children, just *bad* children. It's for good children, like Charlie, that he runs the factory. But Wilder is scary in it and he's got so many fantastic lines, definitely one of Wilder's finer moments (as if that's saying much but Wonka and The Producers more than justify all those rubbish films he did with Richard Pryor)

I don't understand all these freaks who keep claiming the books better than the film, or that Gene Wilder is a bad Wonka. You're all wrong. Wilder was a perfect Wonka and the film was ace, so ner.

The music is fantastic too. Well done Mr Newley.

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Willy Wonka is a son of a bitch. I' d like to sic MOthra on his ass. HEs creepy and pusilanimous

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you have Mothra at your ass-siccing disposal then?

Anyhow, to clear this up once and for all: "pickaninnies" is a really terrible racial slur referring to black people. Quite frankly I think that Mr. "The US Government Is Evil For Calling Eskimos Eskimos" Easton should apologize for his use of it. It's not funny or cute, especially not coming from the P.C.P. Why not just start using words like "spic" and "wop" and "nigger" and "injun" and "chink" while we're at it?

Ally, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we have a list of which racial slurs its sensible to get annoyed about and which it's silly to get annoyed about? It strikes me both Ally and Anthony are using a double-standard here with regard to the e-word and the p-word.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NB I'm starting a new thread about slur-words so people can answer there - above comment not meant as a slam on Ally or Anthony.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Because i am using it in context . The Oompa Loompas are a terrible slur against blacks. I shoulf have used my words more carefully but i wanted to have impact.

anthony, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seven months pass...
erm... pickaninnies? wtf are those :|... in any case, it's very fun to say; and anyone who is frightened by Oompa Loompas... DON'T BE! They're so cool! I love them... and pickaninnies... I don't care what that is anymore, its just super fun to say :D

I was too lazy to look it up. And now I'm leaving work.

Dare, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pretty sure the oo--ee--oo duane's referring to back in August is actually the soldier (flying monkeys??) things marching around the wizard of oz's castle, not the oompa loompas. I think all they had was their arsenal of rhymes about all the stuff that the 'oompa loompas doompity do'

Ron, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh OK. yr probly right. i have a real bad memory, esp for stuff about movies.

, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Oompa Loompas were a bunch of pompous moralizing pricks.

Michael Daddino, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn right, if I want to guzzle sweets then I'll fucking do it.

The part of the film where they go through the tunnel is just plain odd. Why have it in a kids film? Bizarre.

Ronan, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
