I know a woman who had a double mastectomy & she says of all the things she's tried – commercial or home-made – that the knitted ones feel the best. And there's a similar anecdote from the pattern designer. She has made them for herself in a couple sizes to fit different blouses of hers better.
― Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)
When I met this lady she was making herself a fresh set of boobs as we talked, right there on her knitting needles. It's like the most inspiring DIY in action I've ever seen.
― Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)
it's mostly the way they're being sold...'knitted knockers'...pretty twee (and they're multicoloured!) but yeah I'm down w/ any functional breast substitute - sorry if it looked like I was gawping at that concept - just the disconnect between cutesy knitted breasts and their function
also wow that's neat - does she try and give them an anatomically accurate shape?
― lllljjjj (acoleuthic), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)
She just followed the pattern. They go under your bra, so I don't think trying to sculpt a perfect boob is necessary.
― Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)
Would it be in bad taste to purchase some for drag-related activities? (N.B. have no real desire to do this, just wondering)
― lllljjjj (acoleuthic), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)
All I know is this lady highly endorsed them for wearing under a bra if you've had a mastectomy. She said they were a nice weight, filled out a bra well, & that soft yarn felt nice against her chest. She wasn't showing off decolletage or going for the kind of hyperfeminine caricature that sometimes accompanies drag. Probably works better than a lot of other things, tho.
― Ponies are horse children (Abbott), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)
the kind of hyperfeminine caricature that sometimes accompanies drag
Yeah I hear you...the best kind of drag IMO is the naturally feminine kind, not the camped-up showmanship of a braggart - and rolled-up socks don't give a good bra shape
I feel bad for going o_OOO though - and kinda want to atone for it
― lllljjjj (acoleuthic), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

How handy, an interview with the person behind the site:
Carolyn Kellogg: At what point did you go from cruising Etsy to starting Regretsy? Was there a specific item that triggered Regretsy?April Winchell: Yes, I actually talk about it in the book. It was a horrible kitchen rug with a drawing of Barack Obama and the words "YES WE CAN" stenciled on it in black paint. My friends Scott and Drew sent it to me as a housewarming gift and a cruel joke. It came postage due from South Africa, addressed to a nickname they had for me, and for which I had no identification. It was expensive and time consuming, but what a payoff.CK: As a consumer, do you own pieces from both Etsy and Regretsy? In other words, do you appreciate both?AW: Oh yes. You have to understand, I basically spend my entire day shopping. As an unintended consequence of looking for crap all day, I often come across amazingly beautiful things, and unfortunately, have to buy them. I have spent a small fortune in the last six months on the good, the bad and the ugly.I did once ask my readers if they would like me to post exceptionally creative and well made things from time to time. I got more hate mail from that than anything I ever posted.

CK: You'll be at Borders in Glendale tonight -- are you expecting anyone to show up with craft items?AW: Yes, a few sellers are coming in with pieces that are featured in the book. The woman who made the famous fish/squirrel taxidermy hybrid is going to be there. And Creepy Dolls is bringing a bloody vampire zombie teddy bear that we're going to raffle off for charity. I've also heard that the woman who makes soap that looks like poop is showing up in a giant penis costume. So you know, a typical book signing. I'm sure Tom Brokaw gets the same crowd.

I thought about that unicorn painting request after someone emailed it to me but at the time I didn't know it was from Helen Killer.
April has featured two things by me on her site. I met her at ROFLcon earlier in the year.
