Scars, broken toes, birthmarks etc. (If any ILE'er is seriously disabled in any way, then absolutely no offense is intended)

Deep scar on my left index finger, from a cut from my swiss army knife, years ago, whittling a piece of a willow tree (not a good idea). Very tiny (not sure if it can be seen now) scar on chin from when I attempted to grab my dad's razor from the bathroom counter and "shave" as small Josh. (This may qualify as my earliest memory, too, as in the other thread - pretty old one too, I don't remember anything before that.)

Josh, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Deep crater-esque scar on my thigh from an infected shot, scar under my chin from when I slipped in the bathtub as a small child...had to get stitches... Surprisingly, that's it for now.

Melissa W, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a red cresecent type bmark on my back.

anthony, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony...you are the chosen one- for years we have searched for the man with the Red Crescent of Petra on his back.. and now.. our quest is finally over!

Mitch SecretCabalastnamewithheld, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*Ahem*..composure returns.. I have a loose piece of skin on my foot from an incident many years ago involving an aquaintance with one of those four-wheel "kiddie* motorbikes. Got my foot positioned somewhere it shouldn't have been and the wheel kinda ground off the skin. Now, it really isn't noticeable at all. Other than that, nothing I can think of.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Huge iron-shaped curve on back of right hand.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a birthmark on my nose which looks like a light bruise. It's not that noticable now but when I was little I used to get asked about it all the time. I've also got a chipped tooth from my eighth birthday party when I hit it on the bottom of the swimming pool in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre. And a scar on my finger after slipping on the ice on the way to playschool, there's one on my knee from the same accident but it's not as noticable, particularly as I'm wearing trousers.

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi folks, I have scars that don't readily show such as one on my right foot from an axe, a beaut on my arm from boiling coffee and a few operations... The way I look at this is we have earned the scars and they make up who we are... They are part of us. Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scars under each arm where I have had cysts removed, a scar on the lower part of my stomach where I had an ovary removed, scars on knees from falling over on rollerskates as a kid, my fingers are kind of twisted from where they have been broken and a small scar on my chin which nobody really notices except me, and I've had four broken toes but no one really notices them either.

Mascara, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot my deformed fingers. They look like they've been run over by a truck...twisted and rotated and pointing in every direction and bowing the wrong way.

Melissa W, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scar on right wrist where I stuck my arm through a glass door, scar on upper forehead where I hit my head on a telephone pole last time I went to church, scar on the middle finger of my right hand where I got a deep sliver, scar of unknown origin on lower lip, birthmark on back. Scars are fuckin' cool.

Otis Wheeler, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

age 8- stitches in chin from hitting bottom of pool while swimming with eyes closed...age 11- stitches on side of head when rode little bike under a truck and didn't make it. and stitches when 13 from falling down stairs (right eyebrow). and fell on face while skating behind a car when 15..no scars but a good story.

kevin enas, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jeez, that'd put you off going to church...

Dave M., Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scar on right wrist, small. I have no idea how it got there. Birthmark in same location, has been steadily fading for the past five years.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tons o' scars, none very big, none from doing anything heroic.

duane, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Twin scars from the double hernia when I was eight. Mm, tasty!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Small scar on my upper lip (my dog nearly bit it off).
Scar on my eyes (due to two operations undergone at the age of six and eleven).

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Large scar stretching from my top inner thigh to my knee - caused by tripping over a termite hill and landing on a jagged branch while running in a half-marathon through the Nigerian jungle many years ago.

scott, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a false tooth and one of my canine teeth is chipped (do they count?). I have a slight scar on my left foot.

jel, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cutting/burning marks up left arm, hand and right hand from self- mutilation during self-hating years...am much happier now i've discovered misanthropy.

Geoff, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weeny scar on my chin from fainting in a Greek restaurant in Bloomsbury and refusing Pete's suggestion that we go to the hospital as there was blood pissing out of my chin on the grounds that it was 11:30 on Friday night and we would have to wait for ages. Also I was pretty woozy and did not realise the full extent of my injury. Now I am scarred for life and will have to have a porcelain mask fashioned to hide my disfigurement from society.

Emma, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff. When i was self hating it was booze and pills. Really my love of judy went too far.

anthony, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a 5p sized scar on my left wrist from a friction burn accquired while skateboarding and an indent in my left kneecap from falling on the footrest of a fisher price motorbike. Oh, and a birthmark on my neck just above the hairline.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh good lord...ummmm...

On right hand, ring finger, steadily decreasing in size burn mark from when I got bored and burnt a mole off my finger. On left hand, pointer finger, small permanent red mark where I stabbed myself with a pencil. Left wrist, long red mark that doesn't seem to want to leave from slashing. On my right cheek, directly under eye, small puncture mark from when I was bit by a dog. On chest, right in center, strange discolored indent of unknown origin, shows in pictures from very young so I assume it's an extremely weird birthmark. On right breast, several small raised scars from knife. I have innumerable tiny slash scars on my legs. On right ankle there's a huge one I did to myself, and then stupidly decided to try to tattoo over it, so my tattoo has a section that's markedly lighter than the rest of it and has to be redone a few times because scar tissue doesn't "take" ink as well as healthy tissue.

Probably several more, I have some on my arms but I can't see my arms right now because of my shirt.

Ally, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A fading burn mark shaped like a chicken drumstick on the inside of my right arm I got from lifting a big tray out of an oven at work. Another (sun)burn mark on my chin from driving a convertible with the top down and no sunblock on last summer.

Lesley Higgins, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing too shocking.

A vague vestige of a scar on my left pinky when I broke it playing *cough* Nerf Basketball. Small shiny patch of skin on my right calf from when I gouged myself on the corner of a fireplace @ a friend's house. Slight mark on my nose - looks like a scar from getting it broken, which never happened. Probably some sort of sun-related thing.

AND an oval-shaped birthmark on my right arm. Strange long-ass hairs grow out of that thing - I have to beat them back to keep them in line. All the kids ask me if it's dirt. It's fun.

David Raposa, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six inch groove running down on left forearm, huge indent on left hip that keeps my trousers from falling down and a sun tan

K-reg, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

was gonna ask judy? then i figured you were a friend of dorothy's, so that makes sense. I've been like Liza myself.

Geoff, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grand sploshy keloid scar on right wrist, courtesy MOLTEN LEA!! Aged 13-ish found a lump on roof of parent's house (loose, not actually doing anything). Decided to make an army of little model soldiers (final figurine total: seven). Made plaster moulds using bought plastic soldiers (sample-theft copyright type issue RIGHT HERE: "He entirely deserves his injury," opines a leading intellectual-rights lawyer). Got bored making soldiers, as have zero interest in them: branched out to FRANCHISE COLLECTABLES!! Roquefort the Mouse from the Aristocats (who I happened to have a small red plastic figurine of). Roquefort is fat: a steam-bubble formed in the possibly still slightly damp mould, spattered out at me: entire project essayed on mum's electric stove, in a lyon's coffee tin with a "handle" designed by me, of twigs and wire. Startled, I dropped the "pouring apparatus"; it flipped in the air and tipped its contents onto my wrist. Molten lead = c.300° centigrade — turns your sweat to instant steam, which pushes the now solidifying metal back OFF yr flesh almost immediately. Luckily.

I have a scar mainly because yr wrist is a rubbish place to try keeping a nice healing scab actually attached to yr body. eg shortly after this, I was wearing wellies, and my sock had come down, as they do when you're wearing wellies, and i put my hand down inside my boot — and the scab kinda stayed OUTSIDE the boot...

MOLTEN LEA!! = MOLTEN LEAD!!

mark s, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That explains it, Mark- I thought you'd melted your Star Wars figurines..

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is there anyone who has no scars at all? I have only boring scars. One on my index finger where i lost control of a kite and the string whipped through my flesh(there was lots of pus), a barely noticible line on my cheek where my mother catapulted my from the pushchair, accidentally, so she says and one on the pad of my other index finger where i opened a tin of corned beef then opened my finger using the tin. actually, now i look at it, i can't see that one anymore. perhaps i imagined it.

alix, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really don't believe there is on living soul without scars, whether you can see them or not... I believe we all have our share . Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An open bleeding fracture to my left arm resulted in a circular scar of about half an inch (where my bone pierced my skin), and 2 scars of about 4 inches long each, really pirate-like (where they cut my arm to insert metal bars, then re-cut to remove them...). I love em. Who wouldnt? Feeds my Ballard fantasies...

Simon, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have crinkle cut eyebrows due to various childhood mishaps: Falling into a brick fireplace, falling off stair rail head-first, being thrown at some bookshelves by a girl, being hit with a cricket bat by my brother (or possibly I did that to him), etc. I've got a burn on my finger from grabbing a soldering iron by the tip. I've got a permanent freckle on my left wrist exactly where my pulse is, and a bizarre browny red spot on my heel (about the size of a cigarette burn).

Graham, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dark brown ellipse mid-way down right calf - around 4cm across. Deeply self-conscious about this growing up ("ugh! Jonesy's got poo on his leg!").

3cm white scar on right palm, close to wrist at base of thumb. Aged 16, in 'A'-level Chemistry practical, gently agitating a conical flask of ?.?M ethanoic acid over a bunsen flame, gripping the throat of the flask using too-loose tongs. Smash! Much blood, stitches and tetanus jabs.

Face: residual acne scar-tissue now completely outclassed by permanent and HARD-looking crater-scars as result of recent Gerry Anderson space-plague (adult chicken pox). Grrr!

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight months pass...
i have a scar in the middle of my forehead from a bee sting when i was little and also a scar on my chin from a party in college. That can be summarized thusly: many drunken boys, myself included surrounding a coffee table COVERED with beer bottles and seriously rocking out to Soundgarden 'big dumb sex' when one certain drunken boy decides it would be a good idea to grab one of said bottles, stand up and throw it at all of the other bottles. this proves upon execution to be a rather POOR idea, as a cascade of glass shards finds its way about the room, one particular shard alighting upon mine chin. resulting in one late night trip to hospital for stitches J34H!!!!
