"heard some really good word about Certified Copy and Outrage, among others"
?!
the consensus i gathered is that Kitano's Outrage is the worst film in the competition,Kiarostami - plays like an arty version of Before Sunset, Mike Leigh's Another Year and Assayas' Carlos are the best films so far, and overall - Cannes 2010 is dissapointing, and more interesting films in general are from un certain regard.o well.
― Zeno, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)
director's fortnight and un certain regard have been seen as the superior strands for years surely?

the oliveira film was written in the 1940s, revised in the 1970s, and finally made this year. i read the script of one of the earlier iterations, which was published as a book, a few years ago. it's interesting. have you seen photos of this guy at cannes? he looks astonishingly good for... 101.

hope Apichatpong Weerasethakul will win.
he deserves the breakthrough recognition.i mean - Mike Leigh? again? and his film will be widely distributed anyway
maybe theres a chance Tim Burton won't vote for conservaty.

― by another name (amateurist), Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
to amateurist: Carlos isn't a 5hr movie, it's a TV series! At least that's how its being advertised by Canal+ in France. And there was quite a scandal when the nominations were announced, as this is the first time a TV show is nominated. Or did I get everything wrong?
― Jibe, Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
wasn't it produced in two versions: a 2 1/2 hour theatrical film, and a 5 hour TV series?
that's in a long european tradition. wenders, fassbinder, rivette, etc. have all done this. not sure whether the versions premiered at festivals were extended TV versions or not. but it's not terribly unusual.
― by another name (amateurist), Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
there's a cut-down versh of 'carlos' that will be released theatrically, but the five-hour one will also be available online outside of france iirc
it's not in the competition n e way
xp
― long time listener, first time balla (history mayne), Sunday, 23 May 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)
oh speaking of oliveira his "doomed love" was shown on TV in a long version that has become the accepted version, shows at cinematheques etc. while the shorter theatrical version has been forgotten. think this is true of several other of his (often very long) films.

lol @ BBC's Mike Leigh loses Cannes Film Festival fixation Thai film pulls off Cannes shockBritish director Mike Leigh loses out on the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or to a mystical drama from Thailand.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8699394.stm
... It beat British director Mike Leigh's Another Year, which was seen as the favourite by many at the French event.
... Leigh's Another Year, starring Jim Broadbent and Lesley Manville, stood out for many critics. But Leigh, who won the Palme d'Or for Secrets and Lies in 1996, went home empty-handed.Tim Burton, who chaired the nine-member jury, said: "Each and every one of us has some favorites that didn't make it."Fellow judge Kate Beckinsale joked: "We tried to invent more prizes.

funny how that asian minimalism is now the creme de la creme of festivals (or has it been that way since city of sadness won golden bear 21 years ago?)--but will never, ever reach much of an audience.
weird to picture kate beckinsale discussing all of these arty movies. weird and... sexy. do they always have the token sexy actress on the jury?

was wondering what this guy would say on receiving the prize; i know he's sorta conflicted about some elements of filmmaking.
I'd like to thank the jury, particularly Tim Burton, whose haircut I really like," Weerasethakul told the crowd while accepting his Palme d'Or. He added: "I'd like to send a message home: This prize is for you."

― NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)
shocking. i had to stop reading five paragraphs in because i was getting frustrated by the utter disingenuousness of it, suggesting it was a cynically political and controversial choice when even the ilx pollsters thought it would win! & probably 2/3rds of the critics thought it would before the festival had even started.

Uncle Boonmee does sound like it would appeal to Tim Burton's surreal tendancies.
Not shocked by that reaction though, saw one of the BBC film critics also act all puzzled by the choice - does mirror a lot of the English speaking world's reaction to the Nobel Prize for Literature.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

I certainly would have liked to but they have not come round any cinemas in London.
Zatoichi was well received and then it seems people got bored...
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)
a terrible article, but i dig the last two paragraphs:If Burton is so thrilled by such avant-garde experiences as Uncle Boonmee, why doesn’t he try making one himself instead of always swinging for the multiplex with movies starring Johnny Depp, his favorite A-lister, and proven stories like Alice in Wonderland?
Even better, why doesn’t he use some of his Alice loot to help promote, distribute and champion independent films like Uncle Boonmee, instead of just handing out golden goodies before jetting back to Hollywood for his next Johnny Depp power breakfast?
― the front-porch spirit of M. Ward (Tape Store), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
the last paragraph maks no sense. how is giving a movie the palme d'or NOT "championing it."
and the second-last one is almost as dumb.
― NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Sunday, 30 May 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)
i mean i agree that burton has become an incredibly lazy filmmaker, but going out of his way to make sure attention is paid to a really independent and challenging filmmaker should be fucking APPLAUDED not disparaged because... well I'm still not sure what dude's problem is.
