I saw the first episode when it came out and barely made it through. This week I've been picking up again thanks to czn's recommendation. It does improve, as I watched the third episode in one go without turning it off and forcing myself to come back to it later.

Pretty terrible, and I find it hard to believe that of all the things the BBC could have spent their money on, a campy 300 knock-off was what they decided upon. Still, heard rumours that they've picked up the rights to Treme, so maybe that will even it out.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Friday, 16 April 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

my wife watches this, it's absolutely terrible. i think she gets campy fun out of it, but i don't so much. kind of confirms for me post-True Blood that i won't just watch anything on premium cable if it has enough sex & violence, though.

Ghetto Fastnbulbous (some dude), Friday, 16 April 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

etrian odysseus (cozen), Friday, 16 April 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

this show sucks on all levels incl. the sex, there is a lot of sex but none of it is 'sexie'--mostly just feels like they are filling up a quota like they are getting notes 'needs 10% more fingering'

max, Friday, 16 April 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

Imagine HBO's Rome minus good acting, coherent scripts, a compelling story arc, and high-end production design, and you sort of have this series. Except it's worse than that.

WTF cat with unfitting music (kingfish), Friday, 16 April 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

okay, possible spoilers, but i did a quick scan as i'm only a few episodes in and now i'm thinking it might be worth sticking out.

Maureen Ryan likes/defends it.

Prequel:

Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz’ hit original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.”

Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the series, will appear in the prequel briefly, but Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave. With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.

John Hannah returns as Batiatus, owner of the Ludus, along with his wife Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless.

Other returning actors include Peter Mensah (Doctore), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha
(Barca), Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur), Lesley-Ann Brandt
(Naevia) – and others. New characters will also be
added – most notably the gladiator who was champion of the House of Batiatus before Spartacus or even Crixus – who will help fill in the story about the people and politics in the House of Batiatus and ancient Capua as a whole.

Production on the second season of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” was postponed this spring to allow Andy Whitfield to be treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in New Zealand. His doctors indicate that the actor is responding well.

“The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of ‘Spartacus,’ giving audiences the engaging experience they’ve come to expect,” said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. “Fortunately, Andy is responding to his treatments, and will be able to be part of this prequel in a limited capacity. As soon as he’s able, we look forward to continuing the Spartacus story.”

this show is woah

it is kinda pretty awful and garbage but I enjoyed every minute

Brooker is pretty right on in a very general way

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Monday, 24 May 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds like some deathless dialogue.

ha ha, from that article:

It's always dick o'clock in Spartacus land.

Jeff, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

This show was horrible and I can't wait for the prequel.

Our downloaded first ep had fucked up subtitles. How appropriate. I seriously have an extremely low treshhold but this was waaaaaaay too bad. I was astounded by how fucking bad this was.

keep going!!!! srsly

OMG this is the best show EVAH. The second half of the season is so ridiculous but in a really fun kind of way. I just read the guy playing Spartacus has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphona so the second season has been delayed. :-(

The article mentioned above is right on the money: second half is fan-bloody-tastic.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 5 July 2010 08:30 (fifteen years ago)

Jupiter's cock, do the gods tempt me with this mockery? Come on, slaves, do not say your domina is the only one who likes this!

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 5 July 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

first episode i watched of this was where the two gladiators kill the giant. great stuff. ive never seen a show where the extras look like theyre having a blast. love the visceral dialogue too and the machiavellian scheming coupled with violence and borderline pr0n, whats not to love?

New Spartacus has been cast.

iirc it won't be called "Blood and Sand" though.

Gukbe, Monday, 17 January 2011 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Enjoyed the first episode of the new season. Seems like they may have a little better production values now??? Still, it's a winning formula. Fighting and sex, juxtaposed and in montage form.

Jeff, Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

i hear that this show is very watchable

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

I want to watch it but no more starz/netflix streaming.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

ok I never noticed this before but there's a title card before it starts that says, "Spartacus is a historical portrayal of ancient Roman society that contains graphic violence and adult content. Viewer discretion is advised."

ok someone said "'twas" i guess that's a contraction

goole, Thursday, 29 March 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

goole you suck this is the best show ever, you just need to enjoy boobs, lots of fake blood, and lols

well, I know nothing of the current series, but the other two were grebt

the prequel series has the most amazing sex + death nightmare in it

mh, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

i saw a scene where one woman was gonna go in a dude's house and surprise kill him but then the dude's wife (?) sneaks up and grabs the surprise-killer chick's hand from behind and makes her stab herself and then cuts the her throat and shoves her into a shallow indoor pool thing, and then the wife and her husband are covered in the dead chick's blood and start fucking in a doorway next to the shallow pool

goole, Friday, 30 March 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

yah that was awes

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 30 March 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

can't deal with the new guy :/

he needed to look idk, more french

a phenomenological description of The Eagles (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 9 March 2013 09:57 (twelve years ago)

Man I hope we get some sort of Six Feet Under like ending with Crassus being killed and gold being poured down his throat and his son getting hard sonned in battle with the Parthians. Feel like they've set the son up as too much of a villain (he even raped Julius Fucking Caeser!) to not have some kind of commupance ending.

There's wiggle room to let Spartacus get away maybe, but it almost feels like they're setting up Gannicus to somehow have a happy ending. Don't know how, though.

Perfect finale.

Simon H., Monday, 15 April 2013 12:33 (twelve years ago)

This was great. Ended exactly as it should have. Would have liked a flash forward to Crassus getting killed and gold being poured down his throat before the finale but totes cool with how it ended. Caught some feelings over Gannicus.

Gukbe, Monday, 15 April 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

We knew Spartacus had to go but I thought Gannicus might make it out, was pretty bummed about that as well.
