amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com reader reviews: C or D?

I actually like them a lot -- they're written by people who generally like the music, books, and/or movies they're reviewing; they're largely honest and free of promo hack bullshit; they give me a much better idea of whether or not I'll like a given CD, book, or movie before I hear it; and occasionally there will be some very interesting and brilliant analyses. I am totally serious.

What do y'all think? (Discussion not limited to Amazon and Barnes and Noble -- any other online seller that has purchaser reviews are also pertinent).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i do not have a credit card. Books like rosaries need to be tactile. You need to intercat with them pyschically on every level. When browsing, when buying , when reading and when storing.

anthony, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

me and my friends used to read reviews of shitty albums on amazon just for the laughs. the best ever was this korn review, it was just one sloppy paragraph that kept referring back to the 'korn guys' that try to hang out in the walmart looking for 'korn girls' in their 'mid80s lowrider monte marlos'. it referred to the car like four or five times, and each time called it a 'monte marlo'. what a mindfuck.

ethan, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No offense to the people who write for Freaky Trigger, but I think the amazon.com reader reviews of dance and pop compilations like the Now That's What I Call Music! series is the only music criticism worth reading.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In all seriousness: I think that the reader reviews on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com are a poor man's version of The New York Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, or other such publications. And I mean that as a complement, not an insult. At its best, the reader reviews perform the same function as those magazines -- that is, they discuss what's good, bad, whatever, about a given movie, CD, book, or whatever -- and they do it relatively succinctly and in pretty user-friendly terms. It's also inherently anti-elitist; you don't have to be Pauline Kael, Greil Marcus, or someone at some think tank to write something and get a reaction. And as I mentioned in the header, it's free from the usual industry flack BS (except for the "professional reviews," but who cares what those have to say?) I think it serves a great purpose, considering that most American newspapers and magazines have cut back on their coverage of and commentary on the arts (and what coverage and commentary there is is so often pedestrian and mediocre).

Even the Korn fans' comments about "cruisin' for Monte Marlo chicks" is amusing and fits in with what I'm trying to say. It's a cultural studies phenomenon, almost.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cultural studies whatever, I just know that I'm not gonna trust Greil Marcus on teenpop, I'm gonna trust girls in pink with doily chokers around their necks who spend their days watching Freddy Prinze, Jr. movies and playing Dance Dance Revolution. I wish I could be so brilliant:

"Ok, first of all, the backstreet boys are not boys anymore, there all 30 something now, they should have quit a couple years ago, they have totally worn out their welcome and we are tired of them. This is a stupid song. Show you the shape of my heart? Who wrote this? They need to be locked in a box and have bananas thrown at them. The backstreet boys should be locked in there too. I'll show them the shape of my fist. This is a dumb song, it's ridiculus how stupid it is. And did you see the video for this. It speaks for itself. Backstreet Boys, do us all a favor, and retire. Please! Children in Africa are suffering enough."

A ba dee a ba dye.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Otis, you said made my point better than I could!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eh. Good sometimes, terribly tedious others. Also, they censor the reviews. I remember submitting a brilliant piece on Ciphers by Di Filippo (which is perhaps one of the 5 best rock n roll novels ever concieved) which got censored for some, uh, evocative language.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having the fans' and 'average' listeners' opinions ain't always so great. With rock records, for example, you tend to get lots of 'this is so much better than that pop crap,' 'this is real music' kind of junk. Also 4 million reviews of Ulysses which say 'this book sucks yo, Joyce can eat me'. I didn't really need that 'sociological' kind of data to tell me that most people will not dig Joyce.

Josh, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Otis, this may be true for you but I don't relate to pop as those teenyboopers do. This is not to say I look down on teens and their obsession with Timberland's hairdo or whatever.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Timbaland ;P

Anyhow, I actually was roped into writing 'professional' reviews for Amazon briefly to get free CDs. They all sucked, so I stopped.

Ally, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For those who care, there's a hostile READER REVIEW of the Arcade Projects which has me weeping with laffter every time I go back and look at it (I'm still waiting for the paperback, y'see): haven't checked to see if still there mind

mark s, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Read some crappy article somewhere abt authors posting psuedonymous positive reviews of their own bks on Amazon, or negative ones if they were feudin' with another writer. A few too many of the reviews on sites like Amazon read like half-assed lit crit tryouts rather than genuinely unmediated 'street' opinion, but some of the v. angry reviews on the Internet Movie Database are pretty funny.

The Amazon software wouldn't let me use the phrase "Heroin House" on my Wish List, btw...

Andrew L, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Timberland...Timbaland... Timberlake of course. Christ. I need to update my knowledge of boybands. It's still stuck in the early 90s with Bros and NKTOB.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Timbaland's not a boyband, he's a producer, and the only people who might care about his hair all write for Freaky Trigger.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, you are talking about Justin Timberlake, I understand. Why didn't you say so in the first place. He has great hair.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not even the FT writers are that boring.

Ally, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hang on, hang on. Justin Timberlake has the worst hair I've ever seen. he should be shot for sporting that hair. It's unacceptable in all formats, and to top it off it's blonde. What are you talking about, Wheeler? Nutjob, just when I was about to point out on the paunches thread that you were quite thin yet also a genius. This just proves that I'd be lying, damnit.

Ally, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait wait, isn't Justin the one whose hair is almost always cut the exact same as Ramon's? Except for now, because Ramon is growing his back and Justin is sporting that weird half-goatee thing which I actually think looks pretty cool?

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Amazon.com reviews, but w/any "indie" record review they will invariably feature the "sick of the N*Suck? Listen to this" line that plagues high school newspaper music writers who like Pearl Jam.

As for authors posting good reviews, read these two reviews by Emily Toth for two books called "The Curse", one which she co-wrote.

(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0374526923/ref=sim_books/103- 5363462-9076626) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0252014529/ref=sim_books/103- 5363462-9076626)

Wait wait, isn't Justin the one whose hair is almost always cut the exact same as Ramon's? Except for now, because Ramon is growing his back and Justin is sporting that weird half-goatee thing which I actually think looks pretty cool?

Is there one totally lame famous person who you don't think looks like Ramon? Anyhow, no, Justin has the curly blonde hair. And as far as I know no facial hair, unless he grew it like two days ago. I think you're thinking of someone else, one of the ones not dating Britney. Or maybe a Backstreet Boy, they're way better looking. Except I don't think any of them have hair like Ramon's, so I think you're thinking of something completely different entirely. Probably Rob Lowe.

Ally, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Justin's not lame, he's the coolest member of a boyband ever (well, 2nd coolest, after Backstreet's rehab boy). I checked Google to make sure, and he is the one I'm thinking of. Ramon has always described his curly blonde white-boy mini-afro as "the Justin Timberlake look". Then we noticed a possible cosmic link between the two when they shaved their heads at the same time. Justin does have facial hair, a little chin fuzz. It could just be dirt, but he's had it since April.

Otis Wheeler, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this cd is just amazing,i swear down! unbelievable!there arent words to describe it!im completely in awe and dumbfounded by it! whata work of art.just buy this recording. blows away kraftwerk,Eno,AFX,Reich! i kid you not! this is the most amazing electronic recording of the 20th century!its pre-empted all of the electronica that your hearing today,by 18 years! it is absolutely outstanding i cant believe it. id give it 1000000000 stars if i could! just pure genius, buy 20 copies! this has just knocked me sideways. incredible is the nearest adjective i can find. made in '81,and sounds like it shouldnt have been made YET!

classic: getting your friends and relatives to post five-star revues.
dud: getting a scathing and ungrammatical review that points out trivial "mistakes" and typographical errors while unsubtly pumping the pseudo-reviewer's superior knowledge of the subject matter.

DUD. this one in particular about Slint had me going. "NIRVANA STYLE ENDING."

Spiderland, February 15, 2004
Reviewer: Gypsum (Boston, Ma USA) - See all my reviews
To begin to describe the impact this album has had on my musical tastes would use up the allotted space that Amazon provides for review writing. Chances are you have come to this album by way of the Kids soundtrack, if not then you probably know of Slint through their wide influence. This is how it happened with me. I watched the movie Kids. I purchased the soundtrack because of the Folk Implosion song "nothings gonna stop the flo". While listening to that soundtrack, I slowly took a liking to the song "good morning captain". At the time, I liked the track because it slowly built itself up to a frenzied Nirvana style ending.

those anne rice reviews are hysterical (the negative ones she responded to).

There are certain phrases that drive me bonkers in Amazon reviews. People use the same "smart-sounding" phrases you see repeatedly and everyone seems to think they are the authority on this particular genre of book/cd/dvd.

redfez, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

overall, classic. as good as any review database anywhere else. some are helpful, some not.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

There are lots of 'OMG READ THIS NOW DAN BROWN ROXORZ!!1!!1!' and just as many 'DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLODDING HACKNEYED SHITE' reviews, but it's the ones in the middle ground that interest me the most.
Why do people take time to write reviews on Amazon of things that they found to be kind-of-ok-if-you-like-that-sort-of-thing? I can understand you writing a "this is meh" review if you are paid to but if you ask me it's a waste of time doing it for Amazon when you could be doing something else, like discussing it here :-)

I once tried clicking the "I am the artist and I wish to comment" link in an attempt at apologising on behalf of Nick Cave for one of his albums but it didn't work.

one year passes...
Aside from the sheer volume of video clips, The Best of Kids & Animals contrasts the styles of former host Bob Saget and current host Tom Bergeron. Saget was a deeply conflicted man: In his eyes lurks a mixture of self-loathing that he'd stooped so low and glee that he was being paid to do something so completely effortless. Bergeron, on the other hand, is at one with his job; it's as if he can't imagine a more worthy task than introducing a video in which his head has been superimposed over that of a man bitten on the hindparts by a camel.

that truncheon thing, July 29, 2007
By Dr. Eigenvalue

I don't know enough about homeopathy to know if "extra-strength" means that there is more or less of the active ingredient. Thinking about it gives me a headache. I think "extra strength" means less medicine, because the central tenet of homeopathy is that the more one dilutes a substance the more medicinal power it acquires. So look for the "maximum strength" Headon, which will presumably have no ingredients whatsoever.

The fact of the matter is that Headon is just wax and menthol. If that cures your headache, more power to you, but then you might as well try Vicks Vaporub Ointment - 6 Oz or a bag of frozen tater tots, which will be both more effective and fun to eat.

If your headache is not caused by tension, then nothing you apply directly to the forehead or anywhere else will work. Most headaches are vascular, and migraines are caused by cortical spreading depression. Wax and menthol do not enter the bloodstream or brain, even when mixed with "extra strength" homeopathy.

Another disappointing aspect of this product is that it has nothing to do with Topper Headon, who played drums on the Clash's seminal album London Calling. I would not recommend either product for headache relief.

This review is from: Virus of the Mind:: The New Science of the Meme (Paperback)
This product was a waste of the obvious. The book is joke. How are you going to teach using the "adventures of eggbert" and making example which are irrelevant to your point? Plus most of it is theory and very opinionated. Very opionated. He himself is infected with the "money" meme. He constantly shamelessly promotes his book "getting past okay". The book was designed for a person with a reading level below average. Unless you like to read inaccurate outdated information don't waste your money. I would suggest to u don't buy this book . Try getting another book. One actually written with someone with a PHD in that department , not by a second rate hack who got removed from micosoft. After all wat does a programmer really know about pyscology compared to a PHD pyscology proffesor like David J. Liberman?

5.0 out of 5 stars Kobolds Laying the Smackdown at Burgermaster, November 15, 2004
By Terrance "Haircut Jones" (Long Beach) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Virus of the Mind:: The New Science of the Meme (Paperback)
This book is the ultimate Memetics Manual, the first is the best. It gives you specific details on monsters. Being that I only have 2 hit points, I have to pick my monsters carefully. Once, while at Burgermaster, a kolbold threw a burger at me with his sling. He rolled a 20, a critical hit, and the burger did 2x the normal damage, knocking me out for 2 hp! As I lay unconcious, a gelatinous cube slowly slimed my burger and fries up. When I came to, I saw him slowly digesting my burger and fries and I exclaimed "How rude!" But the Gelatinous cube just rumbled his gelationous bulbous stomach at me. I would have kicked it's ass, but luckily the Monster Manual told me that would've been a bad idea to use my hands. So instead I used my bic lighter and he apologized for eating my combo #1.

in some ways, that's my favourite of David's reviews. i can't decide if he hated it in '98 and the rage has burned within him for 10 years, or if he has only this year decided to try his hand at a game based on the winter olympics from 10 years ago.

also, it is a great game and he was rong as hell.

I love Herman Trout's four reviews, esp. the Barbara Cartland ones:
