yo!
i'm planning a roadtrip to san francisco with my girlfriend for mid-to-late august and i came up w/ an itinerary this morning (i'm supposed to be studying), but was hoping for some input from you guys. i have a great friend who lives down there now, and we'll be crashing w/ him for about 4 days. i was hoping to spend about 4 days driving each way, with 4 days down there, for about a 12 day total, (give or take). is there anything i am really missing? is 4 days driving with this many stops going to be nasty?
i guess i should let you know that i drive a 4x4 pickup and will throw the canopy on and bring my camping gear. and my gf also gets carsick, unless she's driving, so even though i like driving she'll probably have to do a lot of the windy coast. maybe i'll be drunk instead.
oh and i guess i should be making reservations sooner rather than later. maybe it's relevant to tell you guys i'm in my early 20s?
anyways, here it is:
day 1:
vancouver -> victoria -> orcas island in washington.
easy drive today. hopefully i can find a b&b on the water w/ kayaks!
day 2:
orcas island -> i-5 to the 101 at olympia -> astoria -> cape lookout state park, oregon
i think this is like a 7 or 8 hr drive; i can't remember. i guess we'll leave early to beat seattle traffic. i'd like to check out astoria and see where they filmed my most favorite movie, the goonies. we'll be back around cannon beach on the way back anyways (because i have heard it's so gorgeous.) oh and tillamook has a cheese factory also!
day 3:
cape lookout state park -> through salem, eugene -> crater lake national park, oregon
if i remember correct this should be a quicker drive: 6 hrs maybe? looking forward to this.
day 4:
crater lake national park -> back on the i-5 -> down to san francisco, ca
i'm guessing this will be a long day of driving. is it realistic to make this drive in one day? i hope driving through the shasta national forest is nice, but i have no idea. what's the stretch like between redding and san fran? what about that ridiculous vortex house in oregon from ripley's believe it or not- do i have time to stop?
and then hopefully i can catch a athletics game in oakland, get the tour from my buddy, maybe go to napa, ...
now for the way back:
day 1:
san francisco -> up the 101 -> redwood national park, california
a long day of driving i guess, but it's supposed to be gorgeous. should i skip any of the 101 (to help w/ time? like point reyes?) do we have time to stop anywhere? arcata is supposed to be nice, w/ a nice outdoor bath house and some good restaurants.
day 2:
redwood national park -> newport -> portland, oregon
another long day of driving, but tommorow will be a break. want to stop in newport at the rogue beer brewery for dinner. we'll book a hostel in portland (any recommendations?)
day 3:
portland -> cannon beach -> nehalem state park, oregon?
so what do we absolutely have to see in portland if were here for ~6hours today? (the last time i was south of seattle i was 7 years old). not sure where we'll camp, but we'll check out the beaches around cannon beach.
day 4:
cannon beach -> vancouver, bc
i'll go up the 101 til aberdeen. we don't have red lobster in canada, so maybe i'll search one out. (i think i remember being really disappointed last time though).
sorry for all the questions/long post, but any input at all is really helpful.
what do you think?
and thanks in advance

pretty sure it will take more than six hours to get from Astoria to Crater Lake, it's probably more like eight. it takes about 4-5 hours from Astoria to Eugene.

In late August, Redding to SF (at least the Redding to Vacaville part) will be hot, hazy (dust kicked up by farm machinery) and boring. Redding city limits to the edge of the Bay Bridge was 3:30, but I never tried to set any records. Either going down or coming up, stop in Redding just long enough to check out the Calatrava-designed Sundial Bridge over the Sacramento.
