In my experience? Cats, no question. Still haven't worked out the whole people thing, but cats are easy enough to get along with.

I am probably going to end up whatever the male equivalent of crazy cat lady is. All riddled with toxoplasmosis, basement full of catnip under grow lights, every interior surface covered with hair...

^^ agreed. cats rule so hard. dogs rule too, but a lot less than cats. people, continue to eat fried chicken and vote repub

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 24 April 2010 06:47 (fifteen years ago)

this is really the key:

cats who have some dog-like qualities are where it's at. cat who will play fetch, seeks out your company, and knows via just a stern vocal reprimand that he's doing wrong>>>>people.

― hope this helps (Granny Dainger)

if you have a "bad" cat, then you don't know how to work with cats. you made a mistake by getting a cat. I've never had a cat who didn't like to play -- yes, even playing "catch" in their elder year. In fact, cats will dote on their owners to the point of annoyance!! Like, like Robert De Niro says in 'Meet The Parents', you can basically shout any dog down. They are pussies. At the same time, for better or worse, you *can't* shout a cat down!! Now, this could be bad if you have a bad cat -- but that's probably your fault anyway. that you have a bad cat. If you have a good cat, he won't leave you alone even when you want him too. now amount of "go aways!" will dispel the friendly beast

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 24 April 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

xp - jus so u know, my cats can & will go to absurd lengths to eat any chicken, fried or otherwise (fried chicken rules anyway tbh).

in movie 2001 resurrect thread on planet jupiter (Pillbox), Saturday, 24 April 2010 07:07 (fifteen years ago)

oh *fried* chick def rules. it's just not an everyday staple. more like a once a month treat. for me + the kittehs

mah kittehs get baked chick on the reg. Me and the kittehs don't eat da fried so much, I leave that to the Christians that patronize tha Chik-fil-A and a vote for tha Repubs and close ona the Sundahys so they cana prevent the abortions..

Your cat might have already infected you with toxoplasma gondii and now you are just a puppet for a colony of parasites that have taken over your brain =^_^=

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 21:35 (eleven years ago)

Postmortem predation, toxoplasma gondii, 33 species of bird extinctions, piss that smells like ammonia, cat litter trays, disemboweled mice in your kitchen ...

Those fuckers back in the day that decided to domesticate cats rather than sloths or the smallest spider monkeys, didn't look at the big picture.

xelab, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:31 (eleven years ago)

plants ftw

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:37 (eleven years ago)

that toxoplasma shit has been debunked numerous times:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/22/toxoplasmosis-brain-cancer-cat-owner_n_1822231.html

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:39 (eleven years ago)

At least show a good example of a debunking, not some HP rubbish.

xelab, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

that debunks the idea that the toxmoplasmosis that cats give cat owners causes brain tumours, not toxoplasmosis transferrence itself

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:01 (eleven years ago)

The hubris of humans thinking that they are immune to what every other species on the planet isn't because?

xelab, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

http://www.vet.cornell.edu/FHC/health_resources/toxoplasmosis.cfm

Because cats only shed the organism for a few days in their entire life, the chance of human exposure is small. Owning a cat does not mean you will be infected with the disease. It is unlikely that you would be exposed to the parasite by touching an infected cat, because cats usually do not carry the parasite on their fur. It is also unlikely that you can become infected through cat bites or scratches. In addition, cats kept indoors that do not hunt prey or are not fed raw meat are not likely to be infected with T. gondii.

In the United States, people are much more likely to become infected through eating raw meat and unwashed fruits and vegetables than from handling cat feces.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:28 (eleven years ago)

you don't seem to understand what 'debunk' means

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:31 (eleven years ago)

infected meat is more likely but cats are still a toxoplasma vector, evidently

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:32 (eleven years ago)

in terms of this thread that is still a net + for cats because from an anthropocentric perspective, other people are a far more lethal vector

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

i'm not arguing that transference doesn't happen, just that the frantic, scaremongering tone of all the 'your cat is making you crazy!' articles is unwarranted.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:44 (eleven years ago)

so yes, fine, forget the word 'debunked.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 23:45 (eleven years ago)
