Une Semaine De Bonte

I just impulse-bought it w/o knowing almost anything about it. Did I make a mistake, or will I love it when it arrives?

I have no idea what the title means, either. Someone make fun of me.

If the 'e' on the end of 'bonte' has an acute accent, it means 'A Week Of Kindness'. If there is not accent (or a different one!) I don't know what it means. What made you order it?

Is that the book of Max Ernst collages? I always thought that he relied a little too much (in those collages) on the pre-existing strangeness of the material he was working with (19th century illustrations?). Also, too much of a case of surrealism discovering in the unconscious exactly what Freud said was supposed to be there.

(I don't know your taste, so you may have an entirely different reaction.)

I do like some of his other work, but I don't know it all that well.

Yep, it's the Max Ernst. I guess I saw the cover, with some bird- headed guy standing over a naked chick and knew that I'd seen it before somewhere. after a little googling I've become pretty sure that I'll like it.

I own an old copy of "A Week of Kindness", which is a companion set to his "Woman with 100 heads". Regardless of what this other guy says about "pre-existing strangeness", there are some compelling places imagined in the book...I even found myself writing in my own titles under the separate collages...which seem to exist as points of departure for your own historical reveries. Also, as with much of the best surrealism, there's a lot of humor.

I saw the Max Ernst retrospective at the Met last spring and though I am not the biggest fan of surrealism, it made me laugh and piqued my curiosity. Compared to the Chanel show and the Arbus retro it was easily the best thing I saw in NY: well researched, well collected, well presented, it was truly impressive.
