How do you safely break a dye tag?

I bought this pair of shorts at the Bay. They had a dye tag on them that I didn't notice. When I bought them the cashier neglected to remove it. I threw away the receipt. Now when I bring them back they refuse to remove the tag unless I produce the receipt. (They've already taken the garbage from my building so there's no hope of finding the receipt.) I paid with debit so there's no record on a credit card or anything. (I suppose when I get my bank statement there would be a record of a purchase from The Bay that I could try to convince them with.) Anyone have any techniques for safely breaking these tags without damaging the clothes?

Put the shorts in the freezer.

(to freeze the dye)

You could take them to a different store which also uses dye tags and ask one of their staff to do it. They won't care about the background story.

Also, Mel's 'freezing the dye' tip sounds ingenious.

but would it work? have you tried it sundar? i wouldn't imagine dye having the same properties as water...

microwave the shorts. The dye thing will melt. You will be saved

I was going to ask Mel if she's tried this. It did sound brilliant but Jack raises a good point. Would you just use a knife on the tag afterwards? Maybe I'll take the shorts to Eaton's tomorrow.

My sister's a thief. She's done this. It works.

Depending on what dye tag you have you may be able to take it off with a strong magnet. I think there are two types. One uses an air pressure type gun to undo the tag, but where I used to work we used a strong magnet to pull the pin out.

The shorts will look better with the dye on them anyway. Its the fashion.

Dye the shorts the same colour as the security tag dye, and then proceed to hammer away at until it explodes and blends in nicely. Or leave the tag on and pretend it's a pager.

Write a nasty letter to the store manager. Whether he believes you or not, he will probably have something done about it.
