Is LUTHER -- starring Idris Elba as a hard-nosed cop who plays by his own rules -- to be anticipated?

I do find it very amusing to watch, but last night's episode did end very strongly. Shame it hadn't kicked up a notch much earlier in the series.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Dammit, I've got a Luther-fan-dross pun right here if someone could give it some OTT praise it in a really badly-written way.

this show turned out to be better than i thought it would be (e.g., the first episode was kinda seen-it-all-before lol britishes do silence of the lambs). though i've always thought that silence of the lambs is grossly overrated, this could turn out to be even better 2nd season.

I-95 Phuck Phace (Eisbaer), Friday, 27 May 2011 09:04 (fourteen years ago)

The show started off as a British and slightly higher concept Criminal Minds, with all of the silliness and bad psychology/science/law that that implies, but it definitely got more compelling as it went along, and by the end of the season it became one of my favorite things on television. But I'm a sucker for Idris Elba, Ruth Wilson, and Paul McGann, and the hole their characters dug for themselves by the end of the season made for a fantastic cliffhanger and really set it apart from the from all the other detective dramas. The last scene in the finale was just perfect, really.

I don't know how it will fare in these two two-hour movies, though. It might improve the storytelling and help them get away from the procedural format and concentrate on the more dramatic turns that made the last few episode of the first series so great, or it might just amplify all the holes and implausibilities in the writing.

Melissa W, Friday, 27 May 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

have watched the first 3 episodes now, not really grabbing me. i think the obnoxious score makes it feel cheesier than it actually is, though.

some dude, Friday, 27 May 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

It wasn't until the last episode that I felt it had found its feet. Anticipating the second series to see if they can keep the standard of the last episode.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 27 May 2011 13:45 (fourteen years ago)

Alice Morgan is so entertaining - bless her Joker smile. I love her fucked up relationship with Luther.

some dude, as others have suggested, it only gets better after the 3rd episode. Don't give up.

We make bouquets that fade immediately. (Turangalila), Friday, 27 May 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

the strange pacing of the series made me wonder if it had been commissioned for a longer run then someone got cold feet and they had to chop half the episodes

Once Were Moderators (DG), Friday, 27 May 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah there's only like 3 more episodes right? i will definitely finish it, just not super engaged w/ it, hoping it will pick up.

some dude, Friday, 27 May 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

glad to hear it gets better -- haven't been nuts about the first couple episodes, even though it's well done. everything is pretty good -- acting, overall style, etc. but the mysteries themselves seem pretty half baked.

I knew that the Russian people mercilessly ograblyali ograblyay (James Morrison), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:28 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think it's meant to be believable though, in the same way Batman's not meant to be particularly plausible. It's like a comic book turned TV series, basically.

The Shadow Line was good, but not as engaging as Luther for me. Love the art direction on that.

We make bouquets that fade immediately. (Turangalila), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

I think part of why I didn't connect much with TSL is the characters weren't as vividly drawn as on Luther. I mean, there's nothing I don't find fascinating about Alice Morgan's crazy ass. Haha.

Elba really is bad though. The media are talking him up as the next Bond, for whatever reason is in their heads, and I don't think that any Bond has been a "good actor", other than the current one, but Elba is far too interested in himself, and how sexy he allegedly is, to be good. Lots of actors are like that though, I guess.

Some people call Idris Elba "charismatic". I just call him quite fucking useless as an actor tbh. And the early notices on his director debut adaptation of Victor Headley's Yardie are saying it stinks like a murdered dog on a midsummer's afternoon. His stock has dropped through the fucking pavement since everyone was creaming themselves over The Wire. The BBC drama dept don't even count, no comment.

calzino, Thursday, 25 January 2018 00:29 (eight years ago)

Agyness is ok in Hard Sun but, yep, it’s awful. It also seems to take a perverse pleasure in Deyn getting the stuffing kicked out of her - which happens at least once in the first four episodes, usually at length.

Started watching this, just finished season 2. The most baffling thing to me, about 10 minutes into every episode, Luther – with nothing to go on – just guesses an extremely unlikely scenario and guesses it correctly.

DC: "They were murdered in broad daylight. What do you think this is? A lone gunmen?"
Luther, looking at some photos that reveal absolutely nothing: "Nah. It's two brothers. Not just brothers, identical twins too. Playing a game. A kill means racking up points. These random letters in this notepad must be a password. In a book. But not a second hand book because you could lose it and not find the same edition of the book again. No, it must be a new book. Look for that and crack the code guys, I'm off for a cuppa."

It's super stupid, if enjoyable.

Yes to this though.

From memory that inspiration about the killer gamer brothers made more sense to those of us in the viewing audience with sad D&D-playing adolesences, not that I am talking about myself.

Between that and the post-punk enthusiasm, Luther must have been the whitest black boy growing up in 1980s Britain.

I'm at the end of the 3rd season (I was getting a little desperate for something interesting to watch here). At first it strongly reminded me of a British version of Dexter.

It's like a comic book turned TV series, basically.

- We make bouquets that fade immediately. (Turangalila)

Right, Luther doesn't quite have Dexter-level superpowers but he's close. Like with Dexter, the panoramic setting shots are a big draw for me.

One thing that struck me early on with Luther is how the characters who are portrayed as clueless because they do it "by the book" are all women. I do like the Alice Morgan character. They have toned down a little bit of the Dirty Harry moral code too. The vigilante story line was my favorite so far, I wonder if they had a re-think about exactly what they were promoting early on.

Just watched the first three seasons of this (cos cheapo DVDs).

Somebody upthread called the score obnoxious (maybe referencing the second season.) The first season might have been (bowed guitar stuff?) but I was actually struck a couple of times during the second and third by some surprisingly beautiful cues like when they're approaching the van with children in it in S2 E2. Can't imagine calling that obnoxious.
